Hi, I am trying to find out what became of Johanna McKay m.s. Munro b abt 1814.
Her husband Donald died in 1866 he was the school master at Achnahannat (various spellings). I have her on each census 1841 to 1871 and then she has disappeared. I have tried looking for a death on Scotlands people and on the English BMD with no luck so far.
Any ideas gratefully received.
Linda
p.s hope I have done this right as it is my first post on roots chat.

Firstly, welcome to RootsChat! :)
There's a death in 1895 for a Johanna McKay (other surname Munro) in 1895 in Watten, Caithness. She's aged 74 so that gives her a birth date around 1821. :)
Regards,

edit: Just checked this one and since ScotlandsPeople indexes people under the maiden/other names also, this Johanna is married to a Munro rather than it being her maiden name! ::)
Is it possible she re-married after Donald's death? There's three marriages for a Johanna McKay in Ross & Cromarty after 1866.

Hi Hume24 thanks for the welcome and for checking my information. This does seem to be a friendly and helpful site!
I think I am going to have to look at a second marriage for her. I am just puzzled that Scotland's people haven't got her under McKay or Munro in the deaths index. I will also have to start looking for corruptions of the name.
However, I have just found the daughter she was living with in 1871 on the 1881 census living as a servant in Glasgow so even more intrigued now.

Hi again Linda,
The other thing I suggest is looking for a marriage for Donald and Johanna's children. On their marriage certificates, it will tell you whether she is deceased or not and hopefully help narrow down your date range.

That is an excellent suggestion! I have only a marriage for one of the children so will go looking for the other two.
Thanks,
Linda

Hello 'benfraoch'
Try this for size on scotlandspeople -
Johan MacKay (other surname Munro), died 1905 in Sutherland County, aged 86 years.
-
Afraid it's not that one. Just checked it there and she's married to William McKay.
EDIT: TikTokToo, your idea of "Johan" did give me a clue and I've found her! :) Johanna McKay died July 18th 1896 in Bonan, Sutherland. Her parents are given as Murdo Munro, blacksmith (deceased) and Christina Munro, MS Ross (also deceased). Her death was registered by son Hugh McKay, 75 Mansion Street, Glasgow.
PM me, benfraoch. :)
Using the IGI (found here (http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=igi/search_IGI.asp&clear_form=true)), there's a birth (23rd Feb) and christening (28th Feb 1814) at Tain, Ross & Cromarty. Parents are as the death certificate, Murdo Munro and Christian Ross. There's two others for these parents, Hugh (b. 1808) and Andrew (b. 1806).

Thank you for trying for me Tiktoktoo, it looks like your clue for Hume24 has made all the difference :)

Got her thanks to Hume24. The age is about 10 years out but every other detail confirms it is her.

Hello 'hume24',
Well done - I'm quite happy that you found her.
I note her age in 1896 is 72 years suggesting 1824 birth year. So her own son managed to get her age wrong by about 10 years which today seems barely credible.
My search was 1814 +/- 5 years and I thought I was being overcautious even at that.
A leason learned.

Indeed, 10 years is quite a difference! ;D Linda, you'll need to remember when searching for her in 1881 and 1891, who knows what age she'll be then!

I have found a possible in 1881 Johan McKay age 65 b abt 1816 living on her own in the Bonar district, born Tain which is same as in 1871 - nothing in 1891 yet, but as you say the age might be confusing me!
