Title: Amelia SOLOMONS Aldgate 1841
Post by: kimhat on Monday 07 May 07 13:57 BST (UK)
Perhaps fresh eyes may find Amelia SOLOMONS on the 1841 census where mine have failed ....

All other evidence points to Amelia's birth in 1830/31 in Aldgate, Middlesex. She and mother Hannah are where they are supposed to be in 1851 - at 3 Petticoat Square (Amelia married from this address four years later). In 1851 Amelia is 20, a tailoress. Mother Hannah is 65, widowed, a pauper, also born Aldgate.

Amelia married at Great Synagogue, London, and GRO cert gives father as Joel Solomons, deceased. (London Great records give Joel's Hebrew/Synagogue name as Joseph, and Amelia's as Malkah).

I have searched under every version/spelling of Solomon(s) and Amelia (and Hannah) I can think of in 1841. Either the page is so faint it can't be accurately indexed, or ..... she must be there!! Am hoping father Joel is too ...  and maybe older siblings ... my only hope of getting further with this elusive Jewish family.

Helle, Kim,

Bribery will get you nowhere so hang on to the choccie bics.

I had a look at the lower numbers of Petticoat Lane in the 1841 census
HO107/710  book 13   folios 40 -42
HO107/710  book 14 folios 6 -8
This is the east side which comes under the City of London
HO107/725  bok 2  folios 14 - 19.
This is the west side which comes under Whitechapel

These are not feint,  there were plenty of Solomans  but none fittted you family of Joel/Joseph, Hannah & Amielia.

I did find a death for a Joseph Solomans in the complete ONS indexes>>

Death
Joseph Solomans
Sept. ¼ 1841  Bethnal Green  II  17.

Hope this helps.   I wil try to look at the rest of Petticoat Lane.

Meliora - many thanks for your efforts! My access to the 1841 census is via ancestry.co.uk and we are all aware of some of its transcription/indexing shortcomings (some understandable, some less so) but no matter what search parameters I use, I too find several Amelia Solomons, but none with corroborating family members/ages. I have ploughed up and down Petticoat Square and cannot see the Solomons there ... though they must be nearby, as both Amelia and her mum were born in Aldgate and I cannot imagine an impoverished Jewish family moving too far from base at that time. They will have moved about over the years at the hands of landlords, expiring leases etc, but surely only within a relatively small area. Well, at least until Amelia married and with her husband and 3 children came to Australia, with the aid of the Jewish Emigration Society.
I do appreciate a second set of eyes on the search - chocolate enticements notwithstanding!!
Cheers
Kim

Yes, Kim, it is frustrating when you know the family you are looking for must be in a limited aea & there is no sign of them.  I have looked at the rest of Petticoat Lane & Sandy's Lane continuation of Pett. Lane for the the mother & dau or even the father of the Soloman family with no sign of them.

Sorry I couldn't help any furher.
