Title: Please Help
Post by: bazzajim on Monday 07 May 07 10:49 BST (UK)
I have tried a couple off times to restore this photo, just can't  seem to get it right. I'm a first time poster on this site and have seen some great restoration work. Would appreciate if someone could help me out.

Hi Bazza

Welcome to Rootschat

I've taken the opportunity to crop the image of all the white. i first thought that you were having us on - all I saw were bits of stray hair, etc.  :D

Added - see you've just done it so will remove  :)

I don't know what went wrong before but there was a photo there in a corner.

Yes - I eventually found it tucked up in the top right hand side  :)

It's a lovely picture and I'm sure you'll get lots of takers. Do you want it coloured as well?

I never thought about colour until I had a look at some photos on this site I wouldn't mind having a look at in colour as well.

Hi Bazza

I had a quick go at it for about 1/2 hour but it really needs quite a lot of work on it with pixel by pixel changes and a lot of drawing to get it anything like. I've got restorer's elbow! I'm not happy with it.It doesn't meet my standards  :-\

I hope some one has the time to do it.

         What are they then?

My effort looks like the Adams family with a severe lack of humour. Ah well you can't
win them all.   ( I'm blaming restorers "Big Toe"  & Strimmingitus)

Tomkin - don't be daft - you know it needs lots of work on it - days in my case because I can only spend 1/2 hr at a time doing restores and I don't like using filters.

I've put a 1/2 hour one up but as I said - it doesn't meet my standards.

I think I'd taken the image off to lighten it when you replied.

PSthe little girl seems to have moved her hand and they do all look pretty sombre. Dad was probably going to war next day   :(

Gadget & Tomkin,

Just a comment....

it's not a race or a competition, the aim should be to help, even if the pics are slightly better than the original most people appreciate the results.

People use different methods to get different results, after all it is only a hobby? and we're not all professionals at this type of work?.

Some people use filters & plugins and the pictures can be done fairly quickly, just the other day i had a go at using the healing brush in photoshop at a friends and you can get some quick results with it.

Others like the challenge to brush, burn & dodge going down to pixel level to blend, merge, shape and clone to get the results they think fit which can take some time to do.

At the end of the day if the person who posted the pic is happy, then everyone should be happy.

Rewcastle

Thanks for your comments

I think that both Tomkin and I realise that it's not a race. Goodness It took me over a month to do some of the ones that I post.

I have done photo restores both professionally and voluntarily for 15 years or more digitally and am well aware of the various techniques - I even invented some.

Before that I used to do it the chemical way with toners, etc. but then it was easier to just give the neg a blow.

The main problem doing it here is that one can't scan the photographs ones self and there is a size limit.

Regards

Gadget

 Sorry Rewcastle,

I know that you are new to this and that my brand of humour may have gone completely
over your head.  Gadget and myself have been having jokes with each other for a very long
time, that is the purpose of the smileys to show that it is a bit of fun.

I certainly do not need lessons from you as to the purpose of this photo'
restoration site or in what methods other Restorers prefer.

Of course if you are joking please ignore my comments,

                    Tomkin

Feel free to edit the picture in any way you see fit, :) :) :)

I might just do that with the little lad, if you're sure. I'm downloading and modifying piccies for Sylvia at the mo so will get on to it later.

I have just posted a second picture of the same family less the father, the missing little boy is in the same position with his mother, maybe you could do something with him from that photo.

Just downloaded it Baz. I think we could take the faces from them all. The father's face is fine on this one so........watch this space.

I expect Tomkin will have some fun with them  ;D

You snucked in while I was speaking to Keith's sister in law, TK.

The little lad on the right looks much more human  :)

Hi Gadget,
I only just spotted it.I'm transcribing 1840 births
at the moment. I had just finished one register and decided to
 check my e-mails which I do intermittently & couldn't resist ;D ;D ;D
Wish Bazza had done this earlier but it's our fault for not asking,
don't know why I forgot.  I'll have to ask Poll for some tablets.

                      Tomkin AKA Tomkin, Who am I? ;D ;D ;D ;D

Hi

I've taken Colin's version and added the little lad's face and dressed him a bit more. Still not very happy, though. The texture and detail of the two photos are so different. I tried smoothing a bit to reduce difference but  :-\

Gadget

Re-adjusted but think I'll blur him to fit in a bit better. Now blurred!

First attempts .... aren't dreadfully rainy days good for the concentration .... but the original image of the boy on the right is too far gone really ...
