This photo was taken just after my Uncle (far right, with accordian) was evacuated from Dunkirk. He was in the Army, but as he could play the accordian (without music) he was given one by the Army and asked to use it to entertain the troops he was fighting with

Sorry to ask a daft question..... "what help do you want?"

I assume you're new to this site. :-\
The objective is for restorers to restore / improve submitted photographs :-\
As you can see there is room for improvement ???
Mudge ;) ;) ;)

By the way "The use of Thursday" is to make the week longer!

By the way "The use of Thursday" is to make the week longer! ;)
For the older ones amongst us that's IMPORTANT :'(
-
I think Glen thinks that as you're a restorer, then you can do it yourself - or something like that.
Glen, we often put up photos for each other to restore.
Mudge - I'm very fond of Wednesdays as well, it breaks up the week a bit :D :D :D

Thanks Gadget perhaps I missed the point
Mudge
PS I come from Devon, where they say it rains 8 days out of 7! That adds another 1/7th to life ::) ::)
-
I came from Devon too - 6 years ago. Lived there for 22 years. It rains more here though. I'd say 20days a week.
I don't think I'll do a restore on this photo though - don't like groups of men - a bit boring. I like nice Victorian/Edwardian women's finery :)
Gadget :D

Thanks Gadget -- I get it now....
As I was about to type...
My point was, that Mudge restores for other - was confused why he was asking for help. I thought he might want a date or something -- come on, do I act that stupid???

Well, TK - I'm certainly leaving this group of men to talk amongst themselves - Morrisons, corsets, Thursdays, dates, stupid.................................
Night :)
I hope to see some good restores come morning - no face cream mind ::)

Hi Glen
Sorry for the misunderstanding.
To clarify the issue, when you restore for others, you are not constrained by what you think the outcome should be. So as you will see from the site, there can be a wide range of interpretations for any particular image, and there are some fantastic results / interpretations (some of which may not be true to life, but which are real works of art!).
However when you restore for yourself you tend to be more factual, more blinkered and therefore usually less creative.
Most Restorers occassionally post images to see what others come up with. And Restorers like the opportunity / challenge to work on any images, no matter who from
Cheers

What about less chatter and more action >:( >:( >:(
My poor Uncle survived Dunkirk, and all you can do is twitter on about Thursdays and Morrisons. :( :( :(
Everyone knows that in the UK, Thursday evenings is for dumping all the rubbish progammes on TV ::) ::) ::)
Leave Morrisons until Friday, to miss the "blue rinse" brigade! :-X :-X :-X
Mudge

And as for dates, this forum is an absolute hotbed of dating! "Could I have a date, please"..."Would sks kindly provide me with a date".... all the way up to "HOW ABOUT A DATE!!!" which iirc was actually a quote from Mudge himself, perhaps getting a little edgy after a long week (including Thursday) of restoring...
Cheers,
China
;D ;D ;D

Here ya are, Mudge - don't know where Tomkin is ???
And don't accuse me of less action or I'll (http://www.websmileys.com/sm/violent/sterb032.gif)
While you lot were jabbering away, I was doing this ::)
PS - who brought up Thursdays, then ::) ::) ::)
don't have a Morrisons nearer than 90 miles ;D
-
Well done Gadget . . . you managed to restrain yourself there. I'll bet Mudge likes it when he comes back on. ;)
I like groups of men . .. ... any going spare??
It's 12,000 miles to my nearest Morrisons . .. . . .. .. :o :o :o I'd need more than a Thursday . .. ::) ::)

Hi Gadget
Thanks for that great restore. ::) ::) I knew I could rely on you ;) ;)
My uncle is still alive, age 94, and sent my the photo last week.
Mudge
(ps No more mention of Morrisons please, as I feel guilty having just returned home after treating ourselves to a cooked breakfast there, before going around the local Sunday market)
-
A pity you can't put up a bigger version, Mudge - the faces and the details of the instruments and hands were difficult to do justice to at this size :(
I don't like that place, so I certainly won't mention it :)
And, by the way, where are Tomkin and Glen's restores ::) ::)
Gadget
PS - I tried a new approach to toning. I read about doing a grey-green under tone somewhere in one of my art books (rather than the usual grey). Then i added the browny tone :)

Too much of a handful am I 8)
Come on Tomkin - get your paints and pencils out, pretty please :)
Gadget
PS - Mudge might even like a nice coloured version in a frame :P
PPS - I'd like to see Mudge's own interpretation as well :)
-
Hi Gadget
As nobody else has taken the bait, I succumb to your PPS
Not an easy one to work on, and plenty of scope for interpretation
So here goes

It's a very difficult one Mudge - especially with that banding 1/3 of the way up.
You've managed to get the makers of the squeeze boxes up nicely :) Did you use a bigger sized original?
Gadget

No just the one posted, plus a bit of oversharpening in that area. Still can't make out the second piece of the name. Tried Googling it but came up with nothing

Gadget, Sorry I didn't respond to your comment earlier, but I can't put up a larger version, as this was taken off a 2.5" x 3.25" very faded photograph, and is already scanned at 600dpi
