Title: Oatley
Post by: kimh on Friday 04 May 07 16:50 BST (UK)
Interested in all Oatleys from anywhere at all!

Mine are mostly from Somerset and I am especially interested in them; but would like to hear from anyone who either is an Oatley or has them in their tree.  I am attempting the beginnings of a general study on the name and would like any info at all.

Thanks

Kim

Hi
You might like to take a look at this site.

http://www.spatial-literacy.org/UCLnames/Map.aspx?name=OATLEY&year=1881&altyear=1998&country=GB&type=name

You can use it to find the predominant areas for different names in 1881 and 1998.

This one doesn't seem to have spread very far in 117 yrs.

Hi, thanks for the link.  I had come across it before some time ago, but forgot about it so it's nice to have the info now.

Yes, I don't think we're an especially adventurous bunch - I've moved about 12 miles in 40 years myself!! ;D ;D

Hi Kim,
I'm trying to help a friend out with her tree. She has Oatley's:

Thomas Oatley b c1872 Llantrisant, Glam. His parents were Joseph Oatley and Sarah Richards. Joseph was b c1832 Melksham, Wilts. He cannot seem to be found on the 1841/51 census, and by 1861 is married and living in Pentyrch, Cardiff area.

Have you come across any Oatley's from melksham, or do you know anything about the Llantrisant Oatley's?

This is a ridiculously late reply to your message from last June  :-[...really not sure what happened there, I'm afraid.

Anyway; apologies...I am aware of Oatleys from Melksham but personally haven't researched that line at all as yet.  I also know there are Welsh ones; but again, haven't got a lot of info.  I find it quite strange because my uncle was born and raised in Somerset, married a Welsh girl and moved over there - to Glamorgan, where of course there were Oatleys already!

Sorry I can't be more help, and sorry again for the LOOoooooNG delay.
