Can anyone give me information about my grandmoter's cousin (I think), named Seamus O'Connor? In her journal (1948) she mentions that he was the Sheriff of Dublin and on the 25July1948 he went to a garden party with De Valera. I think he is related on my grandmother's maternal side as one of her mother's sisters married an O'Connor. Thank you. :)

Hi mattiemae,
Seamus O'Connor was a Dublin solicitor who was also involved in the Irish Republican movement (one of those who met at Wynns Hotel, Dublin on 11 November 1913 to found the Irish Volunteers). He was later appointed the Sheriff of the City of Dublin.
He was a first cousin of Arthur (Art) O'Connor (1888 – 10 May 1950), (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Art_O'Connor) politician, lawyer and judge. Arthur was the second son of Arthur O'Connor of Elm Hall, Celbridge, Co. Kildare and his second wife Elizabeth (neé Saul).
I'll send you the email address of Linde Lunney, of the Dictionary of Irish Biography, as she may have some information about Seamus. It will probably be the dates that he was appointed to various positions rather than details about family.

Thank you again for information, Chris. My grandmother's first cousin was Sally O'Connor. She never married and was a joy to be with. I believe she was Seamus' sister. She passed away in 1964. My grandmother visited Seamus for part of her visit in 1947/1948. Many things happened while she was there, a coal strike/shortage, bus (or train) strike, post-war rationing, telephone strike, burst water pipe in the house and lots more. All these inconveniences brought out the many ways humor made life's difficulties bearable (and sometimes enjoyable). Her letters have been saved and will be put together in another book I am preparing for the family. Thank you again for all your help. Any links you can provide will be greatly appreciated. MattieMae

Hi Mattiemae
I was interested to see your posting of a few years back.
Are you descended from the O'Reillys?
Sarah O'Reilly from Shangan Hill in the St Margaret's area of North Co Dublin married Thomas O'Connor and they lived together at Newtown Hyland, a house in St Margaret's until some stage before April 1911. The family bar the eldest son Seamus (who became the City Sheriff of Dublin) moved to Australia and then subsequently to San Francisco. Seamus did have a sister called Sal but she died in San Francisco the 1980s or 1990s ( rather than the 60s) so I'm wondering if there is some confusion here (or perhaps I read your email too quickly)
Seamus O'Connor's son Colm died a few years ago in Dublin.
Thomas O'Connor's sister was my great grandmother - hence the link
I'll be interested to read how you fit in

David,
I have a picture of Sally O'Connor at my wedding in 1964. So I definitely made an error on her date of death. Also, I remember being told that my grandfather, Philip Joseph O'Reilly was from a large family (13?). I don't know if that is true or just a faulty memory from childhood. Most of the family immigrating from Ireland is buried at Holy Cross Cemetery in Colma, California. Only one of the gravesites is marked, however, but locations are on record. I have names of many other relatives we were told were our grandmother's first cousins but don't know how they fit in the family tree.
Some were Beck and Dave Mc Auliffe, Bridget O'Donnell, Dave and Anne Mc Gill and more.

In Holy Cross Cemetery Colma you will also find the gravestone of Sarah O'Connor (nee O Reilly) d approx 1924 and her husband Thomas (d aprox 1936). I found it when I visited San Francisco
Sarah and Tom had the following children
(1) a son who died young
(2) May who died approx aged 18 while they were still in Ireland, she is buried in Prospect cemetery Glasnevin Dublin
(3) Brigid who married Mr O Donnell
(4) Paddy who stayed in Australia but moved in old age to join his sisters in San Francisco which is where he died
(5) Lil who died of TB in the 1940s
(6) Beck who married Dave Mc Auliffe and had four daughters
(7) Sal who you knew
(8) Seamus who married Maire Moran and had approx. 6 children
(9) Ann who married Dan MC Gill who you knew
(10) Gertrude who was a nun and who lived till she was 100 and died in Ohio I believe, not so long ago
I can help you start off your family tree by telling you that the mother of Sarah O' Reilly who married Tom O'Connor was Mary Anne O' Neill.

David, I would appreciate any help connecting the dots on our family tree. First, we were told that our grandfather, Philip received an award for his public service (OBE?), was a cycling champion (we have a picture of him with his hand resting on a large crest shaped award with many names engraved on it) and were also told that his family had differing political views. Nora Kettle and my mother corresponded for many years (childhood through adulthood). We sent packages regularily to Ireland after the World War II and received a piece of sod with shamrocks to remember Ireland yearly. It was always growing on our kitchen window ledge. Nora's married name was Donahue and she lived in Tallaught with her husband and family. I was unable to find anyone by that name when we were in Ireland. Bridget O'Donnell lived in Los Altos, CA with her son and daughter (both unmarried). Her daughter raised and sold birds of all varieties and was quite an expert on the subject. Two of Beck Mc Auliffe's daughters were Maire McAuliffe, a neuro-surgeon in San Francisco and Eileen, married mother of seven. Her first daughter died a "crib death" SIDS at the house in Guernewood Park. About two years later Eileen had her last daughter and the entire family moved to Chicago. We saw them all the time when they lived near my aunt and uncle but lost touch when they moved. My grandmother and mother kept in touch with Gertrude all their lives. Thank you so much for contacting me. Mattie Mae

Mattie Mae (is that really your name?)
If you send me your email address in a private message I will scan the pageIi have on the O'Reillys ( given to me by Marie O Reilly) and email it to you.
The Kettles would have been connected to Tom Kettle the Irish MP who fought for the British Army in the first World War and wrote the poem entitled "to my daughter Betty gift from God" which is very well known. In fact I think his parents may have moved into Newtown after the O Connors vacated it
I was in touch with Maire McAuliffe before she died and met her sister Terry Eldredge in Dublin

Dear David,
My husband is the grandson of Seamus O'Connor. We have a son who bears the second name of Colm O'Connor (my husband's uncle) who died in Dublin a number of years ago. We live in South Africa. My husband's mother was Fionnguala Vogel - nee O'Connor and she died on December 19, 2004. My husband has two sisters.
We have a few old photographs, two of Seamus O'Connor, as well as some others and we are not sure who they are. Where do you fit in the family tree?
Kind regards,
Salome Human-Vogel.

Salome,
If the information you have matches the history shared by many family members, we are cousins. We were told that Fionnuala was born in Ireland in 1915 and died in Johannsberg, South Africa in 1995. If that is incorrect we would like to update our records. We show that she had two children but never had a record of any marriage. I have the names of two children connected to her name. Seamus O'Connor was born in 1882 and died in 1960. His son, Colm was born in 1920 and died in 2002. Colm was the eldest of six children born to Seamus and Maire. We are looking forward to your response. Thank you for your reply. Mattie Mae
-
Dear Mattie Mae,
I just looked at the birth and death certificate for Fionnghuala. She was born 15 July 1915 in 10 Royce Rd, Dublin to Maire Ui Chonchubhair nee Modhrain and Seamus O'Conchubhair. Her death certificate records her death as 18 December 1995 (I got the date wrong in my previous email) but it was actually in Cullinan, Pretoria where she was living at the time with her eldest daughter. She died from a heart attack. She was married to Vernon Augustus Vogel (d. 1993) and they had three children. Two daughters and a son (my husband). It was actually her sister Eibhlin who died in Johannesburg in 2003. We would very much like to know where in the family branch your family fits in?
Kind regards,
Salome
-
Salome,
My grandfather and Seamus' mother were brother and sister. I would be Fionnghuala's second cousin. Seamus' mother was Sara Reilly (1861-1924). I grew up sharing much of my early life with the O'Connor's (Seamus' sisters) who lived in the San Francisco area of California, USA. I have many pictures of them (including one taken at my wedding with Anne, Sally and Bridget) sitting side by side. They are all buried at Holy Cross Cemetery in Colma, California. My records of Seamus' family shows six children: Sorca Marie (1912-1974), Fiacra (1913-1933), Fionnuala (1915-1995), Colm (1920-2002) Caoimhe (1922 -1926), Eibhin (1924-2003). I have the names of two of Fionnghuala's three children. Are they all still living? I am interested in any information you have that you would like to share and would be happy to share what I have or do research for you. David, who you directed your first reply to, is a direct descendant of the O'Connor side of the family. He is very interested in researching and sharing his family history, too.
There was a reunion of the family held in 2000 in Dublin and a book of family history written by our cousin, Marie, was shared with all in attendance. If you are interested she has offered to send you the information she has about your part of the family history. She would need an e-mail address to send it to. Mattie Mae

Mattie Mae,
We actually do have that book, it was given to us by Eibhlin. All three Fionnguala's children are still alive, my email address is (*), if you write to me there, I can share the names with you. I have some photos of Fionnguala and her children as well that I will scan and send.

Dear Matie
Would you be so kind as to also send me the information regarding our grandfather Seamus? Are you in touch with Dan McGill? I would love to know whether he is still alive. And Anne?
Aileen Vogel

Ann McGill died in SF the year before last
-
And Dan?
-
Aileen,
Anne McGill (nee O'Connor) was born 11 Jan 1895 and died 31 Aug 1984. Her son, Dan, was at the family reunion in Dublin in 2000. I am in touch with his cousin, Terry (who also attended the reunion), but have not been able to reach Dan. I have asked Terry how to contact him or his family but have not heard from her in the past couple of weeks. I will share any information I'm given. Hope this helps a little. Your cousin, MattieMae
-
Thank you, cousin MattieMae :)
-
Aileen,
Seamus O'Connor was the eldest of ten children born to Thomas and Sara (nee Reilly). He was born in 1882, Newton House, St. Margaret's Nth, Co. Dublin and died in 1960, Howth Road, Dublin 3.
When my grandmother and her cousins stayed with him on 7 Hollybrook Road, Dublin, in 1947 Seamus was the Sheriff of Dublin. My grandmother's letter dated July 25, 1947 said he was attending a garden party with De Valera. Other letters shared the day to day life in Dublin at the time (post-war), strikes and much more. Our cousin, Marie, traced the family back to 1771 and presented the book to family member attending a reunion in 2000. I did not know about the reunion or I would have been there. Marie shared a copy of the book with me. I've added more information and made corrections to the information (as was intended by Marie). Do you want the names of Seamus' sisters and brothers? I don't have information on His father's family but David probably does (dabirchall). I have the history of the O'Reilly family. Hope some of this helps.

Aileen,
Following up on a statement made by David I checked on Ann McGill. Anne Marie Alden (nee McGill) was born on 2 Mar 1931 and passed away on 15 May 2008 - according to the Social Security Death Records. Her mother was Anne Genevieve McGill (nee O'Connor). Her birth and date of death were on an earlier post. Sorry for the confusion. MattieMae
-
MattieMae, thank you so much for updating me on Anne Alden. It comes back to me now that that was her name married name. It is sad news for me. I never expected it.
Thank you also for writing about Seamus. I heard about the 2000 gathering about a week before it was to take place, so I had no chance to be there.
Could you let me have your e-mail address?
Aileen

Aileen,
I am in touch with Dan McGill. His eldest daughter lives about 30 miles from our youngest daughter in Oregon. Both his other children are alive and well. He has been sharing information about my grandfather (amusing stories from his childhood) with me. I am also in touch with another cousin, Terry (who traveled to Ireland with Dan for the family reunion in 2000.) Looking forward to hearing from you. Your cousin, MattieMae
-
Hi mattiemae,
My name is Simon O'Connor, my father was Colm O'Connor.Seamus O'Connor's son.I have just been made aware of this site and i'm fascinated by all the family history and would love to make contact with you.
-
SimonOC,
Thank you for responding to my initial inquiry. The records I have for your family show you have two sisters. As far as information gathered from family letters and memories - there are many sources. Our cousin, Marie, in Dublin compiled a history of the family and shared it in 2000. I did not hear about it until well after the family reunion (where the book was shared) however, Marie sent me a copy. What questions do you have? Maybe we will be able to provide some answers - by compiling all the information at hand. You may be able to provide additional information also. Looking forward to hearing from you. MattieMae

Hello I don't know if there is any connection but I have found a:
Rebecca O'Connor whom Married a Thomas Byrne of 9 Pitt street, Dublin in 1864 at St Andrew's Church/parish/congregation.
Rebecca is listed as living at 28 Clarendon Street, Dublin and her father was Joseph O'Connor and mother may have been or sister: Esther O'Connor.
Any connection?
-
Bigmamashouse,
I replied to your other post (Byrne), letting you know that none of my records show Joseph O'Connor, Rebecca O'Connor or Thomas Bryne. There isn't anything connecting Seamus O'Connor's father with Joseph O'Connor that I could find - sorry. MattieMae
-
I'm not related to Seamus O'Connor, but I am trying to find someone (a Timothy Sheehan) who allegedly left Ireland on the same boat as him in the wake of the Easter Rising in 1916. I know from files (a signed affidavit) in the Military Archives here that Seamus was in California in late 1916, but any family information on what else he did in the US before returning to Ireland would be most welcome. Best regards, David
