Could someone please do a look up on Martha Wilson born abt 1831 in Hexham (Sandhoe I think) and her parents and siblings.
I know she married Richard Thompson in 1858 in Newcastle and I have details on their family from 1861 onwards.
Any info would bu much appreciated.

Family Search - http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/default.asp which you can search yourself: search - International Genealogical Index (apologies if you are already familiar with this) has some entries (Latinized names) at Stonecroft with Hexham R C Church - for several children to a Jacob (James??) and Martha which fit in. They look very much like yours.

Many thanks for the info Heywood.
Do you have access to the 1841 census?? If so, would you have a look and see what comes up there??
Regards
Shanna

Hello again Heywood.
Martha Wilson's mother came from Scotland (I think) not Hampshire so Mo's post from the 1841 census looks more promising.
My research shows Martha was born in the Hexham area (possible Sandhoe) in 1831 possibly 1832.
Any chance you could have another look at 1851??
Best wishes

Hi Shanna- at the time I also found the family that Mo found so we would be in agreement there.
I will check again though to try to find something out.
A search for Martha Wilson born 1832 +/ - 2 yrs only gives the one I found for born in or around Hexham. St John Lee was/ is a parish around Hexham. http://www.genuki.bpears.org.uk/NBL/StJohnLee/ and the family are living in Sandhoe in 1851.
The other two Marthas are living in Byker and Chatton in 1851. There are lots of Wilsons living in Hexham - but none born Scotland. On the other hand there are lots of Wilsons born Scotland in Northumberland but none who are obviously in the Hexham/Sandhoe area.

1841 (previously noted) is the township of Sandhoe- civil parish St John Lee so it does point to the 1851 family.
Perhaps the enumerator misunderstood - perhaps the family story is wrong- not sure how you will resolve that issue. Hampshire is an awful long way to travel to Northumberland.
Do you have Martha and Richard's marriage certificate for her father's name and perhaps the witness names may also help to support your Martha's origins.
There is some evidence to show the 1841 and 1851 people as being the same.
Family Search children to Jacob (may be James?) Wilson and Martha are:
Maria (Mary) 1816; Gulielmus (William) 1818; Robertus 1821;
Joanna 1824; Sarah 1827; Marthae 1831.
1841 - Mary age is a bit out but possibly.
There is a Robert in Hexham - shoe makers apprentice and he lives beside a Martha in 1851.
Sarah of 1841 is too young but could be a grandchild.
I do think that if you don't already have it- the marriage certificate will at least give you the father's name and then you could see if that matches the Family Search info. Sorry I can't be of more help.

me again
family search has a birth for Jacob Wilson 1793 Hexham- mother Hannah.
I think if his name was James - the Latin would possibly be Jacobus but not sure.

Thanks for all your hard work Heywood. I really appreciate it.

Hi,
I took a look another look at the 1841 census and it only states that Martha snr. was not born in County. It she had stated Scotland there should have been an S for Scotland in the appropriate column. You may just have to go back another generation to find the Scottish connection. I am fairly certain that this is the same family in the 1841 & 51 census.
I also agree with Heywood that the latin for James is Jacobus, Jacoba or other variations depending on what the priest fancied writing.

Thanks Mo. Your help is much appreciated.

Hi there,
Any chance of a lookup in the 1861, 1871 & 1891 census records on Robert Wilson b. 1821 Hexham?
I have a record of his marriage to Christiana Cost on 17 Sept 1854 and the two of them with their daughter Lucy in the 1881 census.
Thanks in anticipation.

William WILSON born 1818 at Sandhoe/Saint John Lee is my g-g-grandfather.
His father James/ Jacobi was baptised at Aydon Castle in Corbridge Parish 12-Feb-1786; father Joseph; mother Jane (possibly SCOTT)
James WILSON married Martha GOODMAN of Upper Clatford at Monxton Hampshire on 21 Nov 1815. ( I have a copy of the marriage register entry - written as WISON)
James WILSON died at Sandhoe 1839 ( I have a copy of the Death Certificate and photos of the MI at St John Lee graveyard.)
Later Martha Goodman WILSON married James SCOTT. I need to check dates etc.
William WILSON married Dorothy GALLEY in Hartlepool in 1845. They had five children and Dorothy died in Newcastle in 1853, the same day the youngest was born. Later William married Mary ? from Lancashire and it is their daughter, Maud Mary, who is staying with her aunt, Martha THOMPSON, in Birmingham in the 1881 Census. Her brother, William is with his father also in Birmingham.
I have no information except what is in the later census for Martha THOMPSON and would be very happy to find out more.
William's son, James WILSON, my great-grandfather, married Mary ORD in Durham in 1871. They had six children, emigrated to Queensland where they had seven more. Some family correspondence and photos have survived but nothing from or about the THOMPSONS.
I have had contact with a descendant of Robert WILSON and Christianna (RHODES).
Their daughter Lucy was mentioned in a 1918 letter to my g-grandparents from James' sister, Janey, a Sister of Mercy in Newcastle. It was through this information that I was able to connect the families to Rose Cottage in Sandhoe. ( Yes, it, but not the WILSONs, is still there and I do have some photos.)
I suspect that James WILSON, who was a gardener, was employed by the Erringtons of Beaufront (Sandhoe) who also owned Rice House at Upper Clatford. Martha was a washerwoman, perhaps she worked at Rice House?
Best wishes,
Mary

Hello Mary,
What a surprise!!! Martha Wilson born in 1831 at Sandhoe/St John Lee is my g-g-grandmother so we must be related!
Martha married Richard Thompson in Newcastle 1858 and had three children. Richard Wilson Thompson and Mary Ellen Thompson were born in Newcastle.
The family moved to Birmingham in the mid 1860's (possibly after the death of Martha Goodman Wilson or maybe because of Richard snr job as a House Furnisher/Upholsterer) and Thomas Wilson Thompson was born there.
1871 census shows (John) Thomas Wilson age 20 (William Wilson's son) staying with Martha in Birmingham. 1881 census shows Maud Mary Wilson age 10 (William Wilson's daughter) also staying with Martha in Birmingham.
Mary Ellen Thompson married Harry Ernest Price in 1893 and had John Wilson Price (my grandfather) in 1894. My middle name is also Wilson so the name continues.
I would like to exchange more Wilson/Thompson info if you are agreeable.
Best wishes

I certainly am agreeable, Brian. Where do we start? I have just joined Rootschat, having come across your message by chance when googling for Sandhoe, so I am not familiar with the process. Do we communicate directly with each other rather than through Rootschat, from now on?
Best wishes,
Mary

Hi Mary,
I would prefer to communicate directly but I am not sure how we can exchange email addresses without putting them in the public domain on RootsChat. Any ideas??

Got your message Mary and have sent an email to you. Awaiting your reply.

Shanna, I have just come across this post again. I am the Polycarp who was involved in this discussion but I can't remember ever using that name. I am usually Roundabout and recently involved in a discussion about Lucy Wilson, Rose Cottage, Sandhoe, which you might like to look at.
Are you related to Martha WILSON born 1832 in Sandhoe? if so, I would like to get in touch with you.

Brian, I have just realised that you are Shanna and we were in touch a few years back. when I last heard from you, you were waiting on your sister's opinion whether your Martha was the young woman in the photo I sent.
I am convinced she is, but what do you think/
Best wishes, Mary
