i'm having trouble finding william SENIOR.
He was born around 1820 ish (guessing). I know very little about him.
He had a daughter sarah ann SENIOR b.1850.
On sarah anns marriage certificate 1868 it states that william SENIOR was living on pearl street, sheffield. his occupation then was an edge tool striker?? cutler anyhow
Any help much appreciated :)

Hi Yorkshirelass
this is a meaning I found for hafter,
A handle or hilt, especially the handle of a tool or weapon.
tr.v. haft·ed, haft·ing, hafts
To fit into or equip with a hilt or handle.

Hiya Wendy
It could well be. I'll use this to see what else i can come up with.
All i have is one of his daughters wedding certificate from 1864. I need to get that back. When i got it i showed it my mum, she was like "oh thats great, can i take it?" so its at her house now somewhere.
On there William's wife wasn't present, it was another bloke so assumed she had died.
Maybe she did and he remarried, there's a big age gap between george and john.
This will keep me busy for a while, thanks Wendy :) :) :)

Wendy on the 1861 census does it show the rest of the people living in the same house?
I was wondering if you did a search for Sarah Ann Senior b.1850 sheffield would it show the William Senior i'm looking for. Maybe you already did this and i'm being a patronising cow lol sorry.

HI Rachel
Your not being patronising, honestly. I tell you like many others I do that many search a day it's hard to remember what I ahve done never mind which way I have done it.
Anyway had a look for Sarah a Senior
there was one that came up aged 11 born Sheffield but it doesn't list them as a family unit so unless we have other names to go its very very very costly looking for all Senior in sheffield.
anyway going on the fact that we know her father was william I had another look for Wm, found him but no occupation listed on this census he is down as being 33 born Sheffield and his ref numbers matched up with those of Sarah a senior 11 and ther was also a Wm junior aged 9 born sheffield again same numbers.
so going on that here below is that Wm senior (senior) in hte 81 census. Not his job, this must be the right one, this time, lol.

Wendy i was wondering if you'd be able to check for Ann SENIOR in the 1861 census, she'd be aged 35 on it.
I followed up this info you got me and found William SENIOR on the 1871 census aged 43, edge tool maker, married but again a lodger.
on the 1891 census i found william SENIOR aged 63, edge tool maker< living with wife ann SENIOR aged 65, henry ROBINSON aged 40, lodger and frederick MILLWARD aged 20, lodger.
I'm not really understanding this mans life but if it would be possible to check in the 1861 census to see if ann SENIOR fits in with the william SENIOR 33, sarah ann SENIOR 11 and william jr SENIOR 9 you found before i'd be very much grateful

This gave me a funny turn. I was born just around the corner from the address in the census image. It occured to me that if they were living in that area at an earlier date there may be some record of the marriages and baptisms. There are some Seniors on the St Phillips registers, but none that fit.
Did find a fair few Burials though

For what its worth there were certainly Seniors in the area as late as the 1960s. People around there didn't move much until the council demolished the area.
