I seem to have hit a brick wall is there anyone who could help me please
I am looking for John/James Mclean/McLain who married a Mary Ann Armstrong on the 7th October 1837 in Urr. They had a daughter Elizabeth born 14th November 1834 in Urr. Mary Armstrong came from Tyrone. From then till 1861 census I have not been able to trace them, Mary and her daughter next turn up in New Cumnock where Mary is a widow. On Mary's Death certificate it states that her husband was a sheriff officer I hope someone out there can help
Kate.

Hi Kate
I've been looking through all the info on your family!
When Elizabeth married David Brown in 1878, aged 42 and a washerwoman, her father is stated as a Tax collector - same person as on Mary's death certificate though. With them on the 1881 census, besides Mary Ann, aged 92 are an Elizabeth Stewart, aged 15 and John Smith, aged 13, both recorded as stepchildren to David Brown.
On the 1861, Mary and Elizabeth are clearly written as McKean, have you tried searching for variations in spelling on the earlier censuses.
I'll try in my local records for Kirkcudbrightshire.

Hi Kate
I still haven't found anything more on them. Iwish I could do a 'mark as unread on this thread' so that I could come back every so often to refresh my memory of them.
Did you find anything else on the 1841 with the different spellings?
