Can anyone help? My great-great-grandfather was Tom Stafford who was born in Godstone, Surrey 1848 and he married Emily White (born 1854, Surrey). Their first child, George Tom, was born 1877 but I can find no marriage record for them. If anyone can pinpoint anything for me or has this information already I'd be eternally grateful.
Thanks.

Hi Chloe,
Where have you looked for the marriage? The full GRO index is free to search at Ancestry UK (look at the FULL index)

Thank you Jane but yes, I've searched that as thoroughly as is possible! Also FreeBMD. You name it, I seem to have tried it!

Hi Chloe,
have you spotted them on the 1881 & subsequent census? If so where in Surrey are they to be found? Where was the son, George born? There's always a chance they didn't marry or the marriage entry just didn't make it to the main office. I suppose you've looked under the name THOMAS & tried a search in the name of Emily White then cross referencing it with Tom Stafford?

Thank you Jane. Yes, I've tried looking for Emily White but nothing to match her to a Tom or Thomas - every possible combination you can imagine and I've tried it!!! Their first child was actually born in Ifield, Sussex near Crawley but still nothing for a match. As you say, they may not have been married but at the moment I'm working on the basis they were - at some point!

Yes, I found them on the 1881 census & noted that their son was born in Crawley so went looking for a Sussex marriage. I thought I'd found something when I found an Emily White married in Horsham Reg. district but couldn't match it up with a Tom Stafford :(
I'm sure something will turn-up sooner or later :)

This is just the same problem I've found. Thanks for looking anyway.

do you know for sure that Emliy was married as Emily White? Or was that her maiden name. Could she have been married before?
There is a marriage for a Tom Stafford in Oc/Nov/Dec quarter 1875, Croydon area. Also on page an Emily Lucy Bull.
Has 'your' Emliy ever given a middle name?
Another idea I had (sorry they are all a bit clutching at straws ish) was - have you found Tom and/or Emily on 1871 census to see if they were married then, v young?
Also may confirm names they used then.

Well Jane, I've found all the same entries as you but I will check the 1871 for Tom - because I can't find Emily for CERTAIN I don't know which census entries for '71 would be correct! Tom I know appears on the '71 himself but I will check the age, etc and to see if still single, etc etc - though I THINK he was.
Thanks for suggestions.
