Title: Transport Through the Ages
Post by: fred1951 on Saturday 28 April 07 19:57 BST (UK)
I was wondering if anyone would like to contribute with transport photos.

There was one thread some time ago, where a member showed us some fantastic photos of wagon and horses in the gold rush (I think).

I have a couple of pics, to start it off, here is one of a Humber, it says 1903 on the back but I'm not sure if thats the age of the car or the age of the photo. :-\

I think this photo was taken around the early 1900s in the same grounds as the Humber.  She does look a little scary, it's the eyes  :o, I think she might be wearing a monocle.

This photo was taken in the 1920s

This is my Grandfather (at the front on the right with the high collar) on a works outing early in the First World War.   He worked as a motor mechanic for a company called Suttons in Manchester. I think he was  only about 15 or 16 when this was taken

Hi Milly,

Thats a lovely photo, those horses must have been very strong to pull all those bodies :o

Hi Lemon that is a very interesting article I wonder if any of our members are related to this vet or the elephant trainer, a little different to the normal Ag lab profession!

Hi Freddie....

I've surprised myself spotting this...but I think it's Llandudno in North Wales.    Check out these pictures and you can see the hotel on the end (Think it is the Grand Hotel).  The Pavilion next to it which is not there in the modern photos and the writing on the sea wall which is still there...
 ;D

My great great grandfather was a hansom cab driver in the 1880s - East End of London.  I've always wanted to see a picture of the sort of vehicle he'd have used.  He worked as a taxi driver until seven years before his death in 1936, when ill-health forced him to retire.

This is a recent photo of the Victor Harbor Horse drawn tram that runs across the causeway to Granite Island. These trams have been running since 1894 and are now considered an icon. They did look a little different back then, but are basically the same - have just been refurbished to take into account safety, comfort (?)  etc.

This link shows them in earlier years.....

Hi Freddie - not sure about this one.... Is it from the same collection by any chance? There is an electric railway at Llandudno - The Great Orme Railway - so it is possible that it could be another local photo. The scenery certainly looks similar. Here's a link to a photo but the train design looks slightly different.  There are other electric railways in North Wales too.

I cleaned your photo up to get a better look.

Hi Milly

Thanks for the clean up :D all I'm sure about is that they come from my grandads biscuit tin of photo's he died in 1963 and they are still kept there  :o, the tram one is faded sepia and the beached boat is an old black & white but looking at the post card you sent it does look like it could be the same area.

Hi Lizzy sorry I haven't got a photo of a Hansom Cab, I wish I did, this is all I can offer you....

Hi Dee thank you for that site, gosh there is so much on there I got a little waylaid with the "Anzacs at Gallipoli trail" photos before finding the trams :)

Loved the pictures of the motorbikes - reminded me of a photo I had printed from some old negatives I found. I believe it is either my fathers, or it belonged to one of his 6 brothers - probably taken in the Clerkenwell area of London.

Also liked the Llandudno tram pictures - my brother is the Secretary of the Llandudno & Colwyn Bay Tram Society.

I thought I'd add a favourite of mine - my grandfather was a chauffeur for a few months (after leaving the regular army in 1913 - before he was recalled to the colours when WW1 began).

It is an Arrol Johnston open tourer (thanks to the National Motor Museum, who kindly identified it for me some years ago).

Weeeeell, an opportunity like this, I had to put in one of Joe on That bike, didn't I.

I have to smile...Mother has stamped it on the back with her J MATHIAS stamp. That was hers no one was having it off her...
BUT
There's no name of the boyfriend under the stamp...
In stead she has named it...
The New Imperial....

Hi Paula

Fascinating topic - I might even look for a picture to add to make my first RC photo attachment!

However I have a query about the way the posts on this topic are displayed . Posts 1-14 page 1 on my machine are much wider than the screen but 15+ on page 2 are all a page wide. Any simple reason?

Pete

Oh Paula that was great thread, oh did make me laugh when seeing the first pic of him speeding :o ;D

Here is another bike the rider was a friend of my grandad I've also copied the back for you to try a read :o all i make out is "teaing with a friend in birm' and "like kissing a girl.........?

I reduced the size of my pictures so that they wouldn't be too big, Pete.

A bit more for you, freddiebean
My Dear Cecil,
Weather permissable I hope to be down next Saturday latish, as I am teaing with a friend in Birm.
I like the look of your (-) advertise my dear chap. Having a business without advertising is like kissing a girl in the (dark?) Eh

I don't know if that makes sense...I haven't got it all...but that's what it looks like to me.

What a lovely thread!  I had to add my picture.  It's of grandad, mum and grandma.  Judging by mum, i guess it would have been taken about 1923ish.  I know grandad had a Harley Davidson and an Ariel, but which one this is, I have no idea!  Grandma used to travel in hte side car with mum on her lap!

Hi Sallysmum and Fred I love your pics, yes it does seem bikes were all the rage back then. Heres one of my grandmother in a sidecar.

Will pass on the message to him - but they have a busy weekend ahead - Llandudno Victorian Extravaganza weekend plus a Transport festival!

Nor had I heard of Arrol Johnston! I think it was a scottish based firm - now long gone!

Have added a photo of my Grandma Sutton - died before I was born, photo probably 1930's/1940's - I know nothing about the car!

This one is slightly more modern but it makes me smile- it shows Great Uncle's car parked outside the Air Ministry in Kingsway with a new German "thing" strapped in the boot. The chap in the top-hat is giving it a really snooty look. Uncle H. took it in April 1942.

I wondered about Shrewsbury too but looking at this photo I think it can't be... although it is very similar the porch is smaller and the lion is facing the wrong way.  There's another at Upton  but again the Lion seems to be the wrong way

SHREWSBURY

Unless there has been work done on it of course...

your photo has a wider porch with two pillars rather than one at shrewsbury... I suppose you could call and ask if they had replaced the porch at any time?

I am wondering now you have Ledbury whether it could be the Upton Lion...  having had building work done where the coach house entrance was.

The couple with the bath-chair look rather like members of the Royal family- they are not King George and Queen Mary by any chance? :)
With regard to the "thing" in Uncle's car boot ^, He had to go out and inspect any new devices that had been dropped by the Luftwaffe over night. I think this one might be a new type of incendiary container that he's taken back for examination.
