Can anyone help me to find these children in the 1871 Census? I'm hoping that they may lead me to locate their mother, since their father died in 1857. Their mother was Mary Whard MANTELL (born in Devon about 1823), although she may well have remarried by then:
Frederick Cyril Robins Holmes - birth reg Sep 1851 Woodstock Oxon 16 151 (died Sep 1878 Bath, Avon, Somerset 5c 406 aged 27)
Sherrett Holmes Sep 1853 Woodstock
Ada Mary Holmes Jun 1855 Woodstock
William Henry [Whor]wood Holmes Jun 1856 Woodstock
Can anyone see them in 1871? In 1861 I think they were in Kidlington Oxford, but in a place where the Census Records have disappeared.
Please help if you can.
Kind regards

Hi Phil
Can't find the others yet in 1871 :-[
In 1881, Sherratt is in Chester as a lodger but shown as a solicitor, so I suppose in 1871 he might be at university or in chambers?

Hi Phil
There is a marriage & this is rather curious :-\
Q1 1859 Woodstock vol 3a pg 703
Mary Whard Holmes to:
Thomas Edward Tolley OR Alexander Houston Mantell
I think this might be a case of cherchez la femme! Could this other Mantell person be a cousin or other relative?

In 1871, Sherrett is boarding with a farmer in Overbury, Worcestershire:
RG10/2677/23/5
Sherreth Holmes, Boarder, 18, Agr'l Pupil, Oxon Ridlington
Head of household is William Creese, 49, Farmer of 650 acres employing 27 men, 12 women, and 8 boys! Plus his wife, sister, 2 nephews, another"pupil", a visitor, and 2 servants.
And I think that Phil means he knows Mary married a Mantell in 1859, but can't find her as Mantell, so is wondering if perhaps she has remarried again by 1871?

Her marriage to Holmes:
James Robins Holmes
Mary Whard Savours
Dec Qtr 1847
Headington District
Vol 16 Page 147
Now with her maiden name, perhaps we can figure out the name of the place in Devon she was born in. On the 1851it COULD be Meeth, but the first letter doesn't quite look like an M. I can't see any other names in Devon that it might be...

Sorry Phil - no sign of Fredercik or William, nor Mary. And I haven't been able to make any progress on figuring out what that place name is in 1851. Hopefully you will be able to make use of some of what we have found!

Thank you so much for this flurry of helpful facts. I have been away for the past few days; hence the delay in acknowledging this assistance.
I think that William is incorrectly transcribed as aged 25 not 15, but he is also a pupil in 1871.
I can't spot Frederick either. but I wonder if he is the Frederick A R Holmer (a misreading of Frederick C R Holmes), born in Kidlington Oxfordshire, who is shown as living in Hertford in the 1871 Census? As he died in 1878, unfortunately we won't find him in the 1881 Census I'm afraid.
Sherrett (also Sherreth and Sherratt) seems to have changed his name from Holmes to Holmes-Whorwood, married in 1897, and then died in 1904 in Kent.
But the main thing is that this all suggests very strongly that their mother Mary (by the way she started life as Mary Whard Miles in 1842, then married a Savours in 1847 and then a Holmes!) seems to have died before 1871, so the kids were all orphaned by the time of the 1871 Census.
Many thanks for taking the time and trouble to help with all this.
Kind regards
Philip Candy
Late breaking news: Here are the details for Mary Whard MANTELL,
buried 20 August 1866, Kidlington, Oxfordshire. Thanks to George on the Oxford list for this lookup!
