Hello there,
Is anyone able to look up a birth of Maria Jane Alexander who was apparently born on 03.04.1809 in Imber in Wilts. I need to confirm just who her parents were.
I have two differing opinions offered to me that she was the daughter of William Alexander and Mary Prictor, or the daughter of (the same) William Alexander and a Keziah Bartlett.
William Alexander was born c1769.
Can anyone help please?

Jane ALEXANDER: dau of William and Keziah.
Was baptised at Imber, Wilts.
On 3rd Apr 1809.
Kezia BARTLETT: dau of James and Elizabeth
Was baptised at Imber, Wilts.
On 20th May 1787.
Charles ALEXANDER: son of William and Kezia.
Was baptised at Imber, Wilts.
On 1st Sep 1811.
William Alfred ALEXANDER: son of William and Kezia.
Was baptised at Imber, Wilts.
On 29th Mar 1823.
William ALEXANDER: son of (occ servant) and Maria
Was baptised at Imber, Wilts. (Note: base born)
On 4th Jan 1835.
James ALEXANDER: son of William and Kezia.
Was baptised at Imber, Wilts.
On 26th Sep 1813.
I expect there are others.
Unable to find marriage of Kezia.

This is definitely the right family, but the marriage between William and Kezia remains a mystery.
One other thing, what does "son of (occ servant)" mean? Also the "(Note: base born)"?
I had William, "son of Maria +unknown", born on 27th April 1834 at Westbury, Wilts. (IGI), so the baptism of Jan 1835 looks to be the right one.

Hi,
The occ is short for occupation, and base-born means illegitimate, without the fathers name being mentioned.
I've included this just in case !
Marriage:
Groom: William ALEXANDER: occ yeo:Residing at All Cannings, Wilt
Bride: Mary PRICTOR: Residing at All Cannings, Wil: status sp.
Bondsmen: MASLEN Daniel, yeo, Allington, All Cannings.
Date 1798 Nov 5th.

Borrowed from another site:
"I have had a quick look at the information I have on Swanboroughs and it would appear that William Alexander (grandson of Thomas Alexander and Jane Swanborough) was married twice. According to the parish registers of Imber, Wilts, he married Kezia Bartlett on November 16th 1807 at Imber Parish
Church. It does not say that he was a widower"

As I had the basic info on William with Mary Prictor, I have looked back at the Swanborough tree 'just in case' that was the right line.
I suspected that Kezia may be a second marriage but still need to find out when Mary died.
In relation to Maria Jane's illegitimate son William in 1834, would the Wiltshire 'Bastardy records' give any indication of who Maria 'liaised' with to produce him?
If so, does anyone know who has access to them?

Hi there, I have Maria as daughter of William Alexander 1769 and Kezia Bartlett 1787.
Maria was sister to my great-great grandfather Charles Alexander 1811.
I have William married to Mary Prictor 1711 with the following information: married by License. Under notes for Mary's mother Elizabeth Pickett I have buried at All Cannings 22/05/1810, buried with daughter Mary, which would suggest that Mary Prictor died well before 1810, even before 1807, leading the way for William to marry Kezia.
Don't have any listing of children for William and Mary.
For William and Kezia I have date of marriage as 16/11/1807 taking place in Imber, Wiltshire.
Kezia had siblings Sarah 1784, Rhoda 1792 and Isabella 1796.
William had siblings Elizabeth 1770, Thomas 1772, Jane 1774, Joseph 1775, Ann 1777, Stephen 1779, Alice 1781 , Sarah 1782, Martha 1784, Thomas 1785, John 1789 and Martha 1791.
Maria 1809 had siblings Jane c1808, Charles 1811, James 1813, Keturah 1818, Sarah 1818, Thomas 1820, William 1823 and Olivia 1826.
Have son William Alexander 1834-1881 for Maria, no listing for the father.

So here goes again,
We share William (1771) and Kezia as common ancestors.
By my reckoning they are my 4xgGrandparents and your 3xgGranparents which must make us 4th Cousins, once removed.
I agree with your list of children of William and Keziah with one exception. I have my 3xgGrandmother as Maria Jane, Ch 3.04.1809. I do not have separate Maria and Jane.
I know that there are a lot of Maria Janes which adds to the confusion, but more of that later.
I have Mary Pricter's marriage to William as 6 Nov. 1798 and her death as 14 Sep 1802.
I have William then marrying Kezia(h) 16 Nov 1807.
You have already listed their children, so I will show the descendents of Maria Jane(1809)
Maria Jane had an illegitimate son William born 1834 died 1881. He married (25.6.1857) Mary Ann West b 1837.
They had the following children:
William b 13.12.1857 died 6.07.1924
Thomas b 6.03.1859
Leah b 15.03.1861 died 31.03.1925
James b c1863 died c 1896
Rose b c 1866 died 17.02.1952
Leah and James had a 'double wedding' on 12.10.1887, when James married Isabella Drewitt or Drewitz b c1864 and Leah married James Cable b c1866

My grandfather, Charles Victor married (29.06.1906) Lily Ellis.
He died in an accident on ss Oceanic in mid Atlantic on 18.12.1912 and was buried at sea the next day. Lily remarried in 1924 and died 26.06.1974
Charles and Lily had the following children:
Doris Lily b 22.11.1906
Laura Mabel b 4.06.1908
Charles Frederick b 9.06.1910
Charles Frederick married (26.12.1936) Elizabeth Esther Ashby b 18.10.1915.
Charles Frederick died 25.02.1973 and Elizabeth died 14.11.2004. They had 4 sons, all living, all married and all with living children.
As well as the BMD certs for most of the above, it has been possible to track the families through the various censuses.
I mentioned earlier about Maria Jane and her siblings. I have the names of spouses for many of them, not least your ggGrandfather Charles who married a Maria Jane Browne and later had a daughter called Maria Jane!
I would appreciate it if you could give the descendancy from Charles down to you if possible. If you don't want to put in online, please send me a pm.
