hello - I have a small window of opportunity ...
I am in Oakville/Toronto ; Aug 4th - 10th visiiting rellies - any good ?
cheers johnP
-
i've always thought it might be a good idea....
hopefully we can do it in toronto.... ;)
-
Gigg, maybe you should plan a visit to your rellies 8)
John, our Civic Holiday is August 6th, perhaps that might be a good time?
Tommy, was thinking the Toronto area, it is pretty central ie coming from the north, east or west.
Karen
-
Toronto is good for me.
Summer plans are up in the air, however, so can't be sure where I'll be on the Aug. long weekend. Definitely here Aug 25 weekend, and with nothing in particular to do.
-
Hi,
What a pleasant surprise -- I will need to check my calender for a meet. Will let u know.
JDC :)
-
Whare abouts are we all coming from?
I was planning to drive to S. Ont during August for a visit, our annual family reunion os the 3rd Saturday of that month. My nephew expressed an interest in visiting me in Sioux Lookout so I would either pick him up or drop him off at home there. He will fly one way, whichever way we go the travel.
The mid or later part Aug would be best time for me. Let me know what shcedule would be best for the others.
JDC

Hi Karen,
Just a note to say that MJP is also from Ontario. I'm not sure who else.
JDC
-
I think that sounds like a great idea. Just let me know when.
Janice
-
And I am in Toronto - so I can maybe be of some help of finding a location, etc.....
Tom
-
Thanks for the invite Karen.
I hope everyone can get together.
Unfortunately I have to pack up my army kit and go overseas on the first of June and won't be home till xmas.
Can't say exactly where, but its in support of our boys in Afghanistan.
Glenn
-
What a lovely idea.
-
Karen,
I'm in Toronto and I'd love to meet up! :)
I can't drive, but I can take the TTC (public transit), so a meet in the city would be ideal for me.
Regards,
Josephine
-
This sounds wonderful. I wish I could make it. Please keep us posted on how it goes. We had a great time at ours in Syracuse. Nothing fancy, just lunch and a lot of sharing and talking.
Kath
-
Stay safe, Glenn !
Would love to join the meet up ... but not planning another trip to Canada until next year. However, if you plan another reunion then ...
-
Hi Karen,
How's the meeting coming along? let me know.
JDC
-
Hi everyone,
How does Sunday August 19th sound???
Was thinking somewhere like the north end of Toronto, like Vaughan/Concord or the west end Brampton/Mississauga?
Any ideas?
Karen
-
Karen,
The date is good for me but it's too far away: I don't drive. The actual city would be ideal for me but, since I'm only one person, you have to arrange what's best for the majority. If I can't go, I can't go.
Regards,
Josephine
-
I think it should be somewhere accessible to public transit, unless some people are willing to pick people up from public transit and take them back. However, I cannot commit to that weekend yet; the following one would be fine.
-
Ok, how about somewhere just off the 401? Does the GO run on Sundays?
Any suggestions are most welcome.
Karen
-
Karen,
http://www.gotransit.com/publicroot/schedule/sysmap.aspx
Wish I could be there.
Glenn
-
Thanks Glenn for the link!!
Sorry you won't be able to make it, stay safe while overseas.
Karen
-
Thanks, I will.
-
What sort of venue were you all thinking of? Private? Public? Outdoors? Indoors?
I'm not very familiar with the 401 zone, I'm afraid; it's just a place I drive through to get somewhere else!
-
Hi everyone,
That Sunday will be fine for me or perhaps the weekend before. Will be going to family reunion on the Saturday that weekend in S. Ont.. No problem driving another little bit to meet up with the Ontario "chatters":-) on Sunday. Just let me know where. If some need to use pblic system perhaps somewhere close to that would be good .... unfortunately I can't remember T.O. that well anymore to make a suggestion.
JDC
-
Hi,
I am finally confirming my travel to Southern Ontario. I will be arriving likely on Friday Aug 17th to attend family reunion on 18th. Sunday the 19th is good for me to meet. Has the meeting place been decided? There was a person on RootsChat that expessed an interest in joining as well... the more the merrier.
JDC
-
Hi Karen,
I'm in Toronto and would love to be at the meet.
Have you settled on a venue yet?
jc
-
I'm still hoping to be able to make it, too, if I can get there by subway.
Regards,
Josephine
-
Josephine, I drive and I'm near St. Clair & Kennedy. Depending on the venue, I could pick you up.
jc
-
Thanks, jc!
I'm in Bloor West/The Junction.
Regards,
Josephine
-
Hi there,
No still havn't figured out a venue.
The date that seems to fit best for people is August 19th.
So, open to suggestions!!
Karen
-
Karen,
Just as a suggestion if you get stuck.
It appears that The Toronto Public Libraries rent meeting rooms. Non-Profit Groups for $10.00 / hour.
I have a Library Card and my local branch is open on Sundays 10am - 5pm.
Here's a link:-

Hi All,
KarenM asked me to locate a place for the meet in T.O. and I have done so with the Kelsey's Restarant for this Sunday at 1pm. Karen thought this place would be a good location - the one at 636 Dixon Rd, in Toronto. Let us know how many so we can book if need be, thx.
JDC
-
Thanks JDC!!
I'll be there :)
Karen
-
Wish I could be there ... do another next year, and I will be !
-
I'll have to ask my hubby tonight re. transportation, etc., and I will let you know!
I don't know where Dixon Road is. I tried looking it up on MapQuest but it's not cooperating with me at the moment.
Regards,
Josephine
-
i have to work :-(
Tom
-
I don't know where Dixon Road is.
Regards,
Josephine
It's by the airport if that helps.
Karen
-
Thanks, Karen. That's quite a ways from here.
-
I'll be there...... if I don't get lost ;D.
Is there a reservation or a name I can ask for when I get there?
I hate to look like lemon, wondering around asking folks if they are the RootsChat mob :)
jc
-
Thanks, Karen. That's quite a ways from here.
Josephine, I think the best bet from where you are (approx.) is up the 427. :o
jc
-
Thanks, jc. I'm visually impaired in a way that makes it impossible for me to drive. Either my husband will be able to drive me, I'll have to find public transit or I won't be able to go. I'll hopefully find out tonight.
-
Hi all,
Certainly hope you can join us Josephine.
I have booked a table for us under the name rootschatting group. My last name is Cole, so the fellow at the restaurant may have used that as well for the booking. I will do my best to get there a bit early.
For those of you that don't know the location, you can google the restarant and there is a location map online. It is on Dixon Rd between the 401 and 427 Hwys (toward the corner of Dixon and Martin Grove Rds) in T.O.. Hope this helps.
See you all there.
JDC
-
Josephine..try Google Maps. It seemed to work fairly well for the location.
JD, Karen and Co.
If all goes well I will see you there. Any change I will let you know.
Kiddo :)
-
Great JDC!!
I know there are a couple of rootschatter who only go into the chatroom who will be coming as well.
Karen
-
FYI, you will recognize each other. When we did our US meet-up, I was so worried about not knowing someone, but the bags coming in and the quizzical looks on people's faces was a dead give away. There were only 3 of us, but we had a great time (at least I think so), so I am looking forward to hearing about this one.
Kath
-
Thx for the encourament Kath, I'm sure we will "recognize" those of us in the rootschatters group :).
I'm leaving tomorow morning for Southern Ontario (from "the North") and looking forward to meeting some of the other the Ontario chatters (and postees). I'm scheduled for my mom's side family reunion on Saturday the day before the meeting. Should prove out to be a gr8 "family weekend" for me. I will do my best to check this board whenever I can during my travel to "down south". See you all there.
JDC
-
Safe trip JD, see you Sunday.
jc
-
I am definately going to try and be there. I will have to put a push on to get back from the cottage, but it looks like I will be able to make it. It will be nice to meet the people that have been so helpful.
-
Hi there,
I thought I would start a thread and see if there is anyone interested in having a meet here in Ontario?
Karen
Please keep me in the loop about this Karen. I'd like to join in if possible. Sadly this weekend is out as I am still under the weather. But another time???!!!
-
Hi Karen,
Count me in
Mavis (Toronto)
-
Oh, have a good time, you lucky bunch! I'll be thinking of you...
Hugs to all!
J.J.
-
Mavis...welcome to rootschat...you are a brave soul to venture into the "real world" of rootschatters before meeting them online...Oh, wait...are you a regular chatter Karen was talking about?
Have a great time!
-
J.J. you mean we won't get to meet. Now I am disappointed.
-
I'm in Manitoba... ;D
But I'll be there in spirit, o.k? :)
-
I won't be able to attend this time but please give us a report and hopefully I'll see you next time!
;)
Regards,
Josephine
-
If I ever win the Lottery I'll pick you all up and meet next time :P ;D J.J.
-
Hi Karen. I just found out about this today and I would love to come but have previous arrangements. Put me on your list of invitees for the next time. I think it's a great idea. Sorry I can't be there.
Regards,
Mary Ann

Hello Karen,
I just got back from Kingston. This sounds like a great idea. I am in Toronto on the 18th for a ball game so not available that day. The 19th is out for me as well. I guess that it's tough to come up with a mutual day.
I was in your area on the long civic holiday weekend.
Mike
-
Hi JJ,
Thanks for the welcome. No I'm not the regular chatter that Karen has mentioned.
I've only recently joined Rootschat .... my friend JC got me hooked. I'm looking forward to meeting other chatters on Sunday.
Mavis
-
HI all,
Looks like I'll have to up the booking # for the group a bit to a larger one, that's gr8, at first thought there was only going to be a few of us. Looks like a very large small group now. Will do the calling in the morning (if cell doesn't conck out on me ...lol) to let them know. I'm sure they'll accomodate as many of of us that show up...just a matter of Kelsey's staff moving tables around ;).
See u all on Sunday and by 4 now.
JDC
-
Good evening JDC,
I count 6 that have said yes, you may know of others who intend to come.
See you Sunday,
jc
-
Hi Genie,

Hi Charlotte,
this thread had many who showed an interest but could not attend for various reasons. At least one from Europe.
If you are ever over this way check us out :)

It was a lovely time good company and good food. The names are on the first picture, if I got it right.
John - JDC, Joanne- Grammatj, Karen, Mavis-Mavador, Genie, Pam-Kiddo.
Hopefully we can do it again.
-
Thanks to Karen and JDC for organizing this gathering.
It's really nice to put a face to a name and swapping stories about our ancestors.
Hopefully we will be able to do this again.
Cheers,
Mavis
-
I'm so glad you had a good time meeting up !
I hope to be in Canada again next year sometime, so will maybe meet some of you ?
-
Well...what a wonderful afternoon we had
It was great to meet everyone face to face and talk about our trees. Some great stories,
Mavador and genie are from England but have been in Canada since the 60's. Mavador had great stories about her family and how the children were almost sent to a Barnado's home. Genie and her family are quite the travellers and did her best cockney accent when telling stories of her dad.
Then of course there was grammatj8 and her grandparents and did they really marry in Ontario or did he go back to the Ukraine and marry???
Kiddo and JDC talked about their plans on searching out Indiapalale's Ephraim Bathurst this week and finding out where he is buried.
Of course, I was just excited to be out with big people (I'm a stay at home mother with 3 girls age 7, 5 and 3) and have great conversation and food!!
Thanks for coming everyone and thanks to JDC for helping secure the location.
Hopefully this will be the first of many!!
Karen

Wow, it sounds great and it's a real treat to see the photo! I'm glad everyone had fun and I look forward to meeting you at a future gathering!

Josephine

I wish I could have been there. It looks and sounds like you had a great time. Maybe next time I won't have to work! :'(
Janice
-
I've been away from the computer for some time due to illness so I missed out.
It sounds like a great time was had by all, and I'm really sorry I missed out.
Especially since I am only "down the street" in Pickering!!!
I hope you can repeat the exercise.
Cheers,
Rob.
-
Hic!!! we all had a good time downing our rootbeers. Thx karen for making this event happen. I think we all had a gr8 time and we should consider doing it again next year. Finding out there are some common issues (thought I was alone dealing with them in the far north) was a good experience. The timing of the gathering was great for me, coming from a family reunion the day before. The ladies accomplished a feat - I don't like having my photo taken and pretty good at avoiding it, so getting me anywhere near the camera was amazing to me :o
As followup, Kiddo and I made it to do some work for Indi's family - another enjoyable time for me. This was a first experience for me trying to trace someone's family off-line and in the "real" world :) Hopefully, the info we collected will help out Indi.
Anyway, hope we have another gathering of the Ontario chatters.
JDC
-
Hi KarenM,
Is it time to start organizing another Ontario RC meet for this year - same place on the 3rd Sunday in August? Had a gr8 time at last one.
JDC
-
Date and place work for me JD!
Kiddo
-
Hi you lovely people ;D
I see you are getting the wonder lust again John ;)
I'll see how I'm doing closer to next August.
Cheers,
Genie
-
Hi Geni,
You may be right...lol. However, it's best to organize holidays early so I can request vacation time at right time. For me anything more than a couple of days has to be planned well ahead - you know employers, no last minute things ;D
