Title: James Penn - Wolverhampton/ wife Cheshire
Post by: RondoWriter on Thursday 26 April 07 13:19 BST (UK)
Trying to establish the wife of James PENN, born 21 May 1819 at Kidderminster, without having to go & look up the parish records, 'cos I'm lazy!.

I am reasonably certain that the following entries relate to the family:
1851 census: HO107; Piece: 2018; Folio: 564; Page: 5 James PENN with Phebe born Sandbach in Cheshire aged 29 so born abt. 1822. One child aged 6 mths
1861 census: RG9; Piece: 1990; Folio: 80; Page: 14 James PENN with Phoebe born Sandbach in Cheshire aged 39 so born abt. 1822.

I have the death of a Phoebe PENN in Wolverhampton aged 48  in Q3 1870 ref 6b 326 (i.e. born abt 1822).

I cannot trace a suitable marriage between a James Penn & a Phoebe or Phebe.

The closest seems to be the marriage in Wolverhampton of James PEEN and Phoebe BICKERTON in Q1 1846, ref 17 352.

There is a possible Phoebe Bickerton in the 1841 census HO107; Piece 122; Book: 10; Civil Parish: Sandbach; County: Cheshire; Enumeration District: 5; Folio: 24; Page: 5 (under the name Pheole) but she is given as 15, so born abt. 1826. I.e. the name & the place are right but the age is not.

Can anybody find a better marriage, or indeed confirm or negate this information, please, & if possible add to it?

Hi,

On the 1841 census ages above 15 were normally rounded down to the nearest 5 or 0.  So in effect if Phoebe was 19 she would have been recorded as 15.
