Could someone help me with the names and locations of Convent Schools near Bideford in early 1900's.
The N. Devon Record Office does not hold any information on these schools.
Thank you

There was a Stella Maris Convent School in Bideford until about 10 years ago - it was then subsumed into Grenville College where it it now the name of their junior school. The site of the school was Northam Road & it has now been redeveloped as housing. I don't know when it was founded

Thank you Steve.
I tried 'Googling' but could not find the School.
Have you any idea whether it was a Catholic only school, or where I might find information for early 1900's.

Dear Jo
I've just managed a bit of quick research at N Devon Reference Lib. The convent school was founded in 1904 by the Ursuline Nuns with an emphasis on "ladylike manners, the French language & Needlework" - no mention of restriction to Catholics. It was refounded as Stella Maris in 1924. The original site was Northwood House

I was in the North Devon Records Office last week but they had no information on Private Schools. Do you have any idea who I could contact to see if they have old attendance registers - 1908-1912?
I was born in Bideford but now live in Cambridgeshire, so cannot do local research that easily.

Hi
grenville college has a website and an email address, it may be that the records have stayed with the school, even though the school has changed name etc as it still seems to be afiliated with Stella Maria (the records do belong to the school and they are not under obligation to hand them over to the record office - shame really!) Try contacting them and ask what they have, here is the website http://www.grenvillecollege.co.uk/Index.html
