Hello,
This is a bit of a last ditch effort I must admit, but I was hoping someone would have access to or be able to search burial records for Edinburgh.
I am trying to locate a Robert Rutherford who was born in Roxburghshire to James and Helen/Nelly Elliot possibly around the late 1790's early 1800's. According to family legend he died in Edinburgh :-\
I have his reputed son's marriage cert in 1863 and he is listed as desceased, his son was born in 1837......so somewhere between 1837 and 1863 I have lost him :'(
Most of his family left to settle in New York in 1832 but at least 2 of his brothers stayed in Scotland, one (Thomas Rutherford) dying in Ayr in 1879 and one (George Rutherford) dying in Minto, Roxburghshire in 1862.
Any help would be appreciated...he has turned into a real brick wall!

Hi Sylvia,
Thanks for looking. My James Rutherford was born abt 1837 in Latheron, Caithness to Elizabeth Sutherland and reputedly Robert Rutherford (farmer). His brother Thomas Rutherford bap 1798 in Birdhope Craig, Northumberland to James Rutherford and Nelly/Helen Elliot married Elizabeth's sister Jane Sutherland in 1820 in Latheron where he had come to work as a shepherd.
There are no other Rutherford's in Caithness except my James and Thomas and Jane's family in the 1841 census, and I have been in contact with a descendant of this couple recently who reports a great aunt of hers wrote down most of the family history some time ago and has the following children for James and Nelly:
Ann Rutherford bap 1791 Birdhope Craig
Mary Rutherford bap 1793 Birdhope Craig
John Rutherford bap 1794 Birdhope Craig
Thomas Rutherford bap 1798 Birdhope Craig
George Rutherford bap 1799 Jedburgh, Rox
Andrew Hugan Rutherford bap 1801 Jedburgh, Rox
Adam Rutherford b abt 1802
James Rutherford b abt 1805
Robert Rutherford
Alexander Rutherford
William Rutherford b abt 1813
Henry Rutherford b abt 1818
James and Nelly and most of their family (including daughter Mary and her husband Thomas Patton, sons Henry, William, James, Andrew H, George and John) ended up in the USA. I have details of their census returns in the US and burials etc.
George returned to Scotland and died there in 1862, Thomas stayed in Scotland and died in 1879, I have no record of Ann, Alexander or Adam as yet and the only info I have on Robert is that he apparently died in Edinburgh ::)
I am thinking that when the family left for the US in 1832 that my Robert went to stay with his brother who was at this stage settled in Caithness, had an illigitimate son there, and then moved back down to Edinburgh at some stage where he died??
It is a bit of a muddle, but we are starting to get somewhere, it is just a pain that I cannot find baptisms for the later children!

Hi Sylvia,
I figured it was Scotland ;D
But where in Scotland? Is it Caithness like the other two. Cause Rutherford is a very common name in the Borders and down south but not so up north, in fact there are very few.
Like the wife's name too, but definately not mine ;)
I am in Scotland at the moment (on working holiday) but thanks for the offer anyway.

Hi Sylvia,
Glad you are enjoying learning about the Scots, it has been a bit learning curve for me too!
I am not sure that the folks you found are connected to me but I am intruigued by the mention of Elenor Elliot (spouse) is that the spouse of Robert or John??
My folks left Scotland in 1832 so before this will (which I assume is 1834) and went to New York not New Jersey, but I am chasing a James Rutherford and Nelly/Helen Elliot so Elenor Elliot is very close.
Will e-mail I think ;)

Hi Jenny. Are you still on the hunt for Robert Rutherford? As this is a very old thread, you may not be. Anyway, I have a theory to share. Regards Richard

Hello all,
I am currently researching James Rutherford (son of Elizabeth Sutherland) and have seen mention of his father being either Robert or George Rutherford (I haven't properly verified or seen evidence towards either claim) but came across this thread on my search for more info. I'd be very grateful if any of you have come across any more information on James' parents that you'd be able to share!

Hi Frankie.
Your question is quite old, so not sure if you'll see this, or maybe you've resolved in the meantime. The death certificate for James states his father was George Rutherford a butcher. If the father of James is a brother of Thomas, which I think is likely, then Thomas' brother George (1799 - 1862) is less likely to be the father because he's married and having children with his wife in Roxburghshire from 1827 through 1839
However, there is evidence that Thomas had a brother Robert and there is a Robert Rutherford - a flesher, i.e. a butcher - who dies in Edinburgh in 1847 aged 42. This Robert marries in 1839 in Melrose, and is living in Edinburgh by 1841 with his wife and a 10 year old William, presumably a son from a previous marriage. There is a Robert Rutherford, a ploughman, who has a son William with Elizabeth Staward in St Boswells, Roxburghshire, in 1830.
A number of children of James Rutherford & Helen/Nelly Elliot are known to be living in St Boswells from 1818 through to 1829: Mary marries Thomas Paton and lives there until at least 1829, George's first child is recorded in the parish baptism register in 1826, Ann marries George Knox in 1822 and dies there in 1827. It's plausible that their brother Robert would also be living in St Boswells at that time.
If Robert the ploughman and Robert the flesher are the same person, then there is a gap in his history between 1831 and 1839, so he could have travelled to Caithness with Thomas etc.
Quite a bit of surmising, but putting it out there for others to think about and add to or refute.
Cheers
Richard

Hey Richard,
Sorry, for some reason I did not see the replies on this thread, but I did see your personal message and have replied to that this morning ;)
I too have found the information about Robert Rutherford the flesher/butcher who died in 1847 in Edinburgh, and believe that he may be the father of my ancestor James Rutherford.
A piece of evidence that suggests this might be the case is that Robert's death in Edinbugh was published in the newspaper in Caithness see below:
“DEATHS: At No. 2, Romilly Place, Tobago Street, Edinburgh on the 22nd ultimo, Mr Robert Rutherford, aged 41.” - John o’ Groat Journal, Friday 31 December 1847
I believe this indicates that he had relatives in Caithness, or was welll known in Caithness, otherwise why would his death be reported there?
In 1847 Elizabeth Sutherland was living in Berriedale, Latheron parish, Caithness with his reputed son the then 10yr old James Rutherford. Thomas Rutherford and his wife Jane Sutherland were also living in Olrig, Caithness in the 1840s, though by 1851 they had relocated to West Kilbride in Ayrshire.
Interested to hear your thoughts
