I am Still looking for a Mainwaring-Nash connection.
My Grandmother was Jemima Mainwaring Nash, born in Vic in1888. Mainwaring, was supposedly a family name, like Bance which was added as a middle name down the family line. Though, I can find no Mainwaring connection.
Jemima's parents were both born in Wales.
John Bance Nash B:1837 and wife Jane Jeffreys B: 1847. Jane's parents (both Welsh)were Ann Prosser B: 1827 and died age 40 and and Jeffrey Jeffreys, B:1820 in Wales but died in Vic.
John's parents were Gowan Richard Nash B:1795, from Wales and Isabella Bance B: 1795 whom along with her family hailed from Kent in England
Some of both the Nash and Jeffreys families came out to Victoria around the 1850's.
Recently, I have read that sometimes with illegitimate children, The middle name given was really the fathers surname.
I am wondering if there is anyway to be able to trace this.

What family history leads you to believe your family are connected to Mainwaring in Staffordshire?
Jemima's parents were both born in Wales. John Bance NASH & Jane JEFFREYS
Grandparents on fathers side
Gowen Richard NASH was born in Haverfordwest Pembrokeshire Wales
Isabella BANCE was born in Rochester Kent
Grandparents on mothers side
Jeffrey JEFFREYS died aged 53 at Melbourne Hospital 1884 reg: 13083 (father: William Mother: unknown)
Ann PROSSER was born Breconshire Wales died 1867 aged 40 reg: 10122 (Father: Thomas PROSSER Mother: Jane WILLIAMS)
Jeffrey JEFFREYS & Anne PROSSER married Brecknock Wales March Qtr 1846 Ref: Vol 26 Page 395.
The 1st child born in Victoria was Thomas Prosser JEFFRIES born Collingwood 1852 Reg: 11436
the last child Walter JEFFREYS born 1866 in Collingwood Reg: 7652
Jeffrey JEFFREYS mother could have been a MAINWARING, I have not been able to find the family on the 1841 census.

The idea of the Mainwaring family connection came for my Grandmother. I have been following the scrapes of her information. Surprisingly, no matter how fantastic they sound they, so far have born out.

You are looking for Mainwaring-Nash.
I am descended from the Nash line, also Mainwaring, and can possibly help you
Isabella Bance, b 1797, married Gawen Richard Nash, b 1794, at Bristol.
Gawen's sister was Julia Maria Nash who married Lieut Edward Jenkins R.N. at Clifton,Bristol
in 1818. Lt Jenkins was drowned at sea when his ship, the 'Frolic' was wrecked off the South Wales coast in 1831 (extensively reported in the 'Times') Mrs Jenkins (Julia) was left with 8 children, one of whom, George went to the Bluecoat school in Newgate Street,London, and from whom I am descended.
Julia Maria Nash was the daughter of Thomas Nash of Bristol, a merchant, but as yet I do not know his wife's surname, she was also called Julia Maria
Thomas died in 1829 at Bath. His brother was Gawen Richard Nash, b 1743 at Walberton, West Sussex who died unmarried. Another brother was Edward.
These three brothers were sons of Richard Nash (b 1694)who married Jemima Mainwaring (b 1710)
Jemima was the daughter of Edward Mainwaring (b 1681) of Whitmoor and Jemima Pye( b 1683) of Faringdon, Oxfordshire.
Both the Mainwarings and Pyes can trace their ancestry back to the Norman Conquest.
The Nashes were extensive landowners in West Sussex; Gawen Nash, Richard's father, married Isabella Pye who was Jemima's sister. This was therefore a 'cousin'marriage. This Gawen b 1668
was a London Goldsmith but is later described as a 'merchant'. He made a large gift of silver plate to the church at Walberton which is now kept in Chichester Cathedral.
I can trace the Nashes back to about 1554.
All this is part of a large pedigree which I have constructed showing the inter-relationship of the Nash, Mainwaring and Pye families. I was interested to learn about the Australian descendants.

The IGI has an LDS submission (unfortunately not an extracted entry) which indicates that Thomas NASH married Julia Maria PHILLIPS, 12 Jun 1790, Haverfordwest, Pembroke, Wales.
However, that surname of PHILLIPS is supported by the death record in Victoria Australia of their son which was posted on:

This seems likely to be the Gawen R NASH mentioned on:

as having been Head Teacher for a time of the Byaduk North state school in SW Victoria.

I have just read your June 2007 message to s.k.
My wife is a descendant of the Nash family (members of her lime arrived in Melbourne in 1853).
I have been attempting to trace the family line. I have managed to reach 1619 when, it seems, that Thomas Nash settled Eltisley Cambridge but it then gets a bit confusing.
I have contacted s.k. some time ago. I will try to make contact again.
In your message you say that you have been successful in reaching 1554. Perhaps you and I could correspond and exchange information, although you seem to be much more advanced that I.
I see that you are descendant of Lt Jenkins. I understand that he was found lashed to the mast. is that right? What a horrible experience for everyone and what unimaginable devotion to duty.

just read this old messeage regarding nash family.my 6xgrandad mathew nash was born near petworth in sussex at around 1690. i believe you can go back toabout 1554. can you help
