Title: John PULFORD/Emma FOWLER
Post by: .k. on Monday 23 April 07 01:18 BST (UK)
Hi,
I am looking for a John Pulford from Sulfolk whom was Transported when he was 21 (for what I don't know) on the "Henry Porcher" from London on14 July 1836. He arrived on the 15 Nov 1836.
He was given permission to marry an Emma Fowler in Dec 1846. She was Transported from London on the "Tasmania" (once again for what I don't Know) on 8 Sept 1844 and arrived on 20 Dec 1844. She was Born in 1820, in Bedminister, Somerset.

Any help would be appreciated,

S.K.

Have you checked to see if either person is mentioned in the book -

"Transportees from Suffolk to Australia 1787-1867"
published by Garry Deeks
[compiled by his father Richard Deeks]

This could be it, from the Ipswich Journal = 9th April, 1836.

Beccles quarter Sessions.

William Ship, 43 yrs. and John Pulford, 19yrs. were found guilty of having entered the dwelling house of John Marriott of Lt. Stonham and stolen 10 or 12 stone of pork, his property, and sentenced to 7 years transportation each.

Dear Pat, Sue and Johngirl

Just a note to thank you for your efforts and in giving me new leads to follow. The Beccles quarter Sessions is one I haven't come across before. Nor the book "Transportees from Suffolk to Australia 1787-1867". It will be interesting to check them out.

It's much appreciated

regards S.k.

Does anyone know where I can purchase the 'Transportees from Suffolk to Australia 1787-1867' book from?  I've tried a few websites but can't seem to find it anywhere!

Many Thanks :)

Hello Joanne,

When the book came out I was not that impressed with the quality of the book, printing etc for the price asked.  So I thought I would mull it over, did I want to buy it or not?

Well, by the time I made up my mind it was already like gold dust.

Richard Deeks' widow has refused to have it republished, a great shame as it would have sold over and over again.

Try abebooks.co.uk and also Claude Cox antiquarian book shop in Ipswich http://www.claudecox.co.uk/  Always worth trying, but many of the second hand bookshops have 'waiting lists' for this book now.

Don't give up though - I  had wanted a copy of The Grit for a few years and came across it a few months ago on the internet.

Hi Cyril

I have no further information on John Pulford. Have you found his death, maybe the certificate might show who his parents were.
Good luck with your research.
