Can you clarify the address ....

Barony is/was a district in Glasgow which at the time in question was in Lanarkshire Pollokshaws was at that time in Eastwood a district of Renfrewshire.

Pollokshaws is approximately 5 miles from Barony .... could it have said Burgh of Pollokshaws ?

Monkton is in Ayrshire which is approx 30 miles from both of the above

Sorry I have been unable to find any more info .... my own ancestors lived at no 65 Main Street.

However I did clear up one point .. in some papers Pollokshaws is referred to as "A burgh of Barony" in the early 19th century  .... Police  Burgh status was not applied for until later in the 19th Century

A Burgh of Barony basically allowed them to set up their council and elect a provost

update ... You won't find Main street on any modern map as its name was changed in 1932 to Shawbridge Street ... which still exists.

I'm not sure but the HLW possibly stands for Cotton Hand Loom Weaver.

I'm sorry I don't have access to the 1851 or 61 ..... I just purchased the 41 a few days ago.

PS Bairds Close was apparently near Main Street Pollokshaws ..... so the link is a possible one.

Falkyrn, sorry to both you again,i'm looking at the age of sarah,it seem that her father was only 15 yrs old when she was born,is the census stating that she was the daughter[stepdaughter]and is her surname mcarthur too, thxs lorraine

Daughter ... and surname is McArthur

also remember that with the 1841 census many of the ages of adults were often rounded to nearest multiple of five ...

so he is possibly 36 or 37 and she could have been 18 or 19 which makes the ages "fit" slightly better.

either that or he was a "precocious " teenager with a penchant for an older woman with agnes showing as 5 years older.
