Title: Saqui & Lawrence Jewellers
Post by: TracyL on Saturday 21 April 07 14:33 BST (UK)
Would anyone happen to know anything about Saqui and Lawrence.

I know there was a branch in London in the 1930s, but that's about it.  Who were the Saqui and the Lawrence?

There is a Horatio Saqui on the 1901 census, listed as jeweller but I assume, even if he is connected, the partnership came later.

Any history on this would be appreciated.

Thanks
Tracy

Thanks Stan.

I didn't actually realise they were that big.

Can anyone suggest where I might find any history or at least who the partners were?

Hi Tracy,
See the 27th November 1908 London Gazette, re the dissolution of the partnership of Lawrence v Saqui
http://www.rootschat.com/links/01g6/

The name would continue to be used by whoever carried on the business. The owners in 1966 may have had nothing to do with the original owners.

Excellent!  So Saqui and Lawrence were out by 1908.  Looks like Lawrence took Saqui to court to disolve the partnership.

Can't find anything doing a simple search on the Companies House site.  I have been googling, but nothing helpful turned up.

Hi Tracy,
Saqui and Lawrence were acquired by H. Samuel in 1908 to establish themselves in London. Until then H. Samuel had carried on business mainly in the provinces. As late as 1976 Samuels had 25 shops under the names of Saqui and Lawrence, Paragon, Watches of Switzerland, and Jean Renet, as well as about 250 under H. Samuel.

Have just found entries in the phone books on Ancestry showing Saqui & Co. after 1908 with entries running alongside Saqui and Lawrence.  Presume he set up on his own again.

Saqui and Lawrence were still listed in the 1983 phone book.

If Saqui set up on his own again, I wonder if Lawrence did.  Trouble is there are two or three so impossible to tell if one of them was him.

Hi Tracy,
Horatio is in Liverpool in the 1861 census with his father John Saqui, a Watchmaker and Jeweller. In 1871 he is still there, (on Ancestry as Horate Saqin).
In the 1881 census his father is in London (no sign of Horatio) and he might be the one who went into partnership with Lawrence in that year, or it could have been Horatio. In the 1891 census Horatio is transcribed as Sagni, and in 1901 as Horatio Sagui.
A John Saqui died in Marylebone in the March ¼ 1885, and could be his father, so it is more likely Horatio who went into the partnership.

Thank you so much.

I only wish the Lawrence half had a more unusual name  :)

Hi Tracy

A search of Access to Archives resulted in 8 hits, which might be of interest.

If the above does not work go to http://www.a2a.org.uk and search the catalogue.

Thanks.

Even more interested in finding who the Lawrence partner was now that I have seen their reference to 'Saqui and Lawrence of Birmingham'.

Exactly the area I am interested in.

Hi Tracy, I only recently started looking at this kind of thing. I was intrigued by your searches on Saqui and Lawrence as I was toled that the Lawrence was my grand father but my father last saw him when he was three, apparently he is buried in Delhi. My grand mother divorced him and married someone called Johnson who I never met, she had three sons by Lawrence the oldest, Victor my uncle is still alive and has two children.

Have just joined this site and have some information. My grandfather had a receipt from Saqui and Lawrence  36 Leith Street Edunburgh on 12/8/1882.

I can scan the leaflet as it has a number of locations for the stores mainly in London but a store in Bournemouth and Cheltenham

Your Grandmother is my Grand Aunt Mabel Minnie Maud (Haider).

There was a bit of a scandal surrounding this divorce (search BMD)… she is alleged to have had an affair with her nephew who she may have married as he was a dentist and they appear on later census together

Minnie’s sister Isabel ALice is my Grandmother so we share a Great Grandfather Charles Francis Xaver Newzel Haider (also a jeweller in Hatton garden).

Minnie’s husband Lawrence Lawrence changed his name from Samuel (they later sold their business to H Samuel)

All a bit tricky to unpick!

I’m desperate for any photos of Minnie or Charles her father

A fascinating piece of film with Saqui & Lawrence in a prime position in Piccadilly Circus.  Well found, Lemons.
