Hi
In the real world, I teach physics.... ;-)
I am looking to see if anyone has any old photos of schools / teachers / classes / labs that they would be willing to share, so that I can get make a gallery of "how it used to be.."
Good condition or needing restoration ....
The higher the resolution the better.
All credit will be given if I actually use them on the wall ;-)
Cheers
Glen

I've got a lovely one taken in late 1880s of my gran and her class and the teachers but it is in a very bad condition - cracks, sellotape, the lot. i might put it up for someone to restore the whole thing. I've only done my gran :)

Here we are. i've had to resize it substantially and can send the biggie, if anyone wants to Pm me their e-mail

This is the first time I've tried to post any pictures so I hope it works! It's only taken me about 45 mins to scan them, and even longer to try to figure out how to resize them as I seem only to be able to change the height/width, rather than the Kb size!
So fingers crossed!
These are my Mum in her Latin class, circa 1952 in Cornwall.
-
Well blow me down! It worked!!! ;D
So Here goes another one... taken at the school in the Ashley Down Orphanage where my Grandad and his brother grew up,(circa 1913). Needs to have a crease removed though.
-
I have this one, 1911 Knockhall Infants School, featuring my Nana Ethel, fourth from left in the front row (the blurry one ::) ). This was in Greenhithe, Kent.
I have another from Australia which I'm just resizing and will post in a tick.
-
This is Ulmarra primary school (New South Wales) in around 1895. My grandfather's big sister Ada is in the second row from the front, peeking out between the second and third girls in the front row. She died at the end of 1895 :'(
Sorry Glen, neither of these pics has a teacher in it, but in the Ulmarra pic you can just see the teacher off to the left hand side!
I have bigger versions of both these prints if you would like them.

Just remembered I have some class photos of my mum and her sister in the 1940s which I could post. Do you want ones from the 1970s or is that too late? I think I have some somewhere...
-
WOW!!!
Love to you all.
Yes, yes and yes - I feel a new idea brewing...
In the day I teach, at night I mess with photos for fun / beer. I am anticipating a new web site called "Images of Teaching" or something like that. A gallery site, with uploaded pics and biogs of the people in them... Need some form of model release / disclaimer I guess.
You guys and gals are excellent.
Teachers not necessary - "Images of teaching" -- I'll just pop off and register the web site ;-)
Take care - must sleep

Would early 1990s be too recent as I have some of me teaching from then.
If you want to know who the people are in my photos, my mum is the tallest girl standing next to the teacher in the first one and at the back with her hand raised in the second.
In the group shot my Gt Uncle is front row, 4th from the left. He and his elder brother (my Grandad) were orphaned when they were just 6 and 4 years old.
My Gt Grandad died at aged 30 of TB, and Gt Gran, knowing that she was also dying of it arranged to take her 2 boys to the orphanage before her death.
I can't begin to imagine how she felt when she left them there. It was the last time they ever saw her, as she died a few months later. I was always told she died of a broken heart, and I can believe it.

Here is a class photo taken in 1871 ... Richmond Grove School in Manchester.

Genie fan, that's a great photo! Look at all those little tackers, arms folded - they look so "tough"! ;D
Here are a few of my mum's photos:
1. 1944 "Mrs Culverwell's Choir Class" (probably at Gladesville Public School, Sydney) - mum 2nd from right in front row
2. 1947 "Gladesville Girls' School, Grade 5A" - mum 2nd from right in 2nd back row
3. 1948 "Gladesville Girls' School, Grade 6A" - mum far right, back row.

Yes Prue they do look tough don't they! This is a family photo but haven't made the connection yet. It's the oldest one I've got!

I've just remembered that I have a photgraph of all the teachers at my secondary school taken in 1961.
I'll search it out and scan later today :)

PS - George has kindly offered to repair the old one :D
Added - I've just checked it and some of the younger teachers - fresh from college - may still be alive and my policy is not to post pictures of living people without their permission - Sorry

Actually, I haven't updated it for a while, so my mum's school pics aren't on there. I will have to ask her whether she wants them up for all to see! ;D I think Nana's school photo and the Ulmarra one are on there, though.

Hi Glen

This photo was taken in East London (probably Barking) in the late 1920s.

What a lovely idea this is! True education ;D
Here is Dolwyddelan School in 1903, possibly a one-room school.
Cheers,
China
-
Can't prove it, but I believe this is also Dolwyddelan (or possibly Blaenau Ffestiniog or Bettws-y-Coed) around the same time.
-
And this is probably Sheffield, although I wasn't able to find which one. It'll be about 1895 or so.
Cheers,
China
-
One more of Dolwyddelan for sure, a different group of children but the teacher on the right is the same person. Probably also 1903.
Cheers,

we have just done some history on our school, going back some years. I will check and see if there are any photo's that you could use on your site. Give me a few days and I will scan them for you. They might need a bit of restoration, but I m sure someone can help.

Hi Prue
Glad to see some old photo's from Gladesville Public School, as I was there 1958 to 1965, and many of my school photo's were taken exactly in the same spot as your second photo. The small stairs on the left of the photo led up to an opened room/shed where the infants were made to sit and have their lunch. Memories...............................

Hello Les :)
I'm glad the photos brought back memories for you (hopefully happy ones!) I know mum always speaks fondly of her time at Gladesville :)

Hi Glen
Not sure if this one will be any good to you but thought I'd post it anyway. It's the school my mother attended in Okeford Fitzpaine, Dorset. Thought it was interesting because of the school bell.

How could I send you school photographs that I have 1900's, 1940's etc to Rootschat? Or do I need to have your email address so I can send the attachments that way? It seems my question is answered below! I can find it in browse mode. What do I do next?

Here is another school pic for you from North of the borders.

Glen,
This is my granny (Jane McRae)- 3rd left back row - when she graduated as a teacher in 1918, with her fellow graduates in Aberdeen...needs a bit of restoration I'm afraid.

My Mum again at school in Southsea (Portsmouth) 1910 ,She was b mid Dec. 1899 so would have been 9 1/2 yrs .
Spring

Oh Spring...that's gorgeous!!
Caz

I've always loved that photo, partly because some of those girls are so beautiful.
Also Ma lost her Mother in 1907. Ma and sister were sent to live with an Uncles family in Southsea . In the 1980's Ma tried to find info about her Uncle Frank , a Royal Marine and she got his Service record but nothing more.
After Ma died(aged 90) I hadn't started genealogy, but eventually had contact with a descendant of "Uncle Frank"
Bitter sweet as the two male cousins whom she played with on the beach, served in WW1 and both traumatized . One committed suicide and the other committed to a mental institution
So pleased that she didn't know what happened to them as it really saddens me and I didn't know them!

Blimey How tragic...we just don't know how lucky we are.
