Hi
Im trying to find the birth of William Henry Raven my grt grt grandfather. I know that he died in 1902
The 1901 and 1891 census confirms that he was born in Preston in 1857. I have checked the BMD from 1855-1859 and cannot find an entry. He does not seem to appear on any other census either.
any advice or help would be greatly appreciated

Could You please post the 1891 Census Ref & Details!(so that we can get a better Picture of What/Who/Where we are Looking for!) ::) ;)
-
1891 has - him as a Pensioner - Royal Engineers- perhaps that's why he's not around in other censuses.
Just a thought that there were barracks at Fulwood Preston so if he was in an army family, he may have been born there but it wasn't the home for other family members.
will keep looking
-
the ref is RG12/1381 Essex, Brentwood district 1
it says Brentor. But i think this has been mis read as 1901 census says Preston. When i look at the spelling it does look like Preston
hope this info helps

Sounds Complicated? :-\
I checked the BVRI 2nd edition, and there was No 'Henry RAVEN' listed as 'Bn in Lancashire'! (does'nt mean He was'nt though, just that He Isn't on the IGI Records).
I will try finding Him on ancestry (Again!) ::)
P.S.
have You thought of looking for Regimental Records?
-
yes it does read as Preston.
Do you have his marriage or his wife's surname at all?
-
His name was William Henry Raven not Henry Raven
I dont know where to start looking for the military records ???
-
He was married to Mary Anne Garrett. There first child Arthur was born in 1881. Cant find a record of there marriage either and ive searched from 1874-1881
-
Hi there,
Have you checked the actual GRO index images?...or just the FreeBMD?
I'll have a look at the images for a little bit while I'm waiting for the roast!
-
erm....which bit is the GRO index
-
well I can see Mary Anne in 1861 and her family in 1881 and 1871 - thought she may have been staying with them but no.
addition:: Mary Anne was still with her family in 1881 so marriage took place after this
-
Hi Heywood
could you tell me the census pages for Mary a Garrett and her family
many thanx

I do hope that this is her- born Witham - she gives Brentwood when she is with William.
I've searched all sorts of ways but can't find him!!

You can order the cert from the GRO on line:

Looking for Military Records that far back would not be that easy?
But, now Heywood has found the marriage You should at least be able to find out the Parents names/occupations! (which is a start)
Firstly, You need to have the Name, DOB, Regiment! (and if possible his regimental No), Here is the Royal Engineers Site:
http://www.remuseum.org.uk/rem_his_tradition.htm
