Hi,
Can anyone help with the 1841 Census for Colchester, possibly the Lexden or Coggleshall area. Looking for Amos Osborn(e) senior. He had a son, also called Amos born @1821. Both of them had the occupation of silk weavers. No idea of his wife's name (sorry).
Amos junior was born Coggleshall (from the 1871 census).
I really need some help on this one as seem to draw a blank every which way.
Many thanks to you all (what would we do without rootschat?).

I can't help you with 1841 census but these OSBORNEs appear in 1851 census for Colchester HO 107/1781 folio 100 St Botolph parish:
Amos age 30 born at Bradwell
Amos 3 Halstead
Edgar 5 Colchester
Jane 8 do.
Mary Ann 32 do.
Miriam 6 do.
William age 1 Halstead
Perhaps the Bradwell referred to is the one near Coggeshall rather than the Bradwell on Sea. I hope this helps

It makes life a lot easier if you tell us what you know! the 1851 from Clincher makes sense with the 1871 info!

Edgar is a relative I suspect, but not the one I am looking for.
I'm looking backwards for an Amos Osborne born @1800 which is why I was hoping the 1841 census would show something (bit of a long shot). His son, also Amos is my relative , born 1821 who went on to marry Mary Anne Bloomfield in Colchester on 1/8/1842. Their daughter, Ellen is part of my line. If I am able to locate Amos (born @1800) on the 1841 census, it might help to 'age' him and provide a place of birth.
Sorry if this has caused confusion!

I will have a manual trawl through the Bradwell-next-Coggeshall 1841 as it appears to be a possibility
NO OSBORN(E)s THERE
will try little coggeshall
NO OSBORN(E)s THERE
will try great coggeshall

Get someone to lookup this ref and page number and see what they make of it?
1841 census (remember the enumerator rounds ages up and down to the nearest 5 depending on how old they are if they don't know).
Great Coggeshall
HO 107/335/04
EAST STREET page 38
A???? Osborn 45
????? " 30
A???? " 15
???? ?????? 75
ages I'm quite confident of !
Definitely Osborn !
name of 75 year old female, haven't got a clue!
christian name of wife, haven't got a clue!
father and son appear to have same name beginning with A, is it Amos? quite possibly, but wouldn't say for certain!

Thanks for that.
It seems my best bet so far.
I really appreciate your time in looking for this. :)

Hi Phil
My 2 cents re: Bryant's info from 1841 census :
HO 107/335/3 - folio 46 - page 38
East St, Gt Coggeshall
Argent OSBORN - 45 - bricklayer
Sarah OSBORN - 30
Argent -do - - 13
Ann OSBORN - 75
All born in county
It helps that I have ancestors with first name Argent, and a clear image from ArchiveCDBooks ;)
I'll have a quick look for Amos
Best Wishes

Found Amos and family in St Botolph:
1841 census
HO 107/344/4 - folio 7 - page 8
Barrick Street, St Botolph
All born in county:
Amos OSBORNE Sen - 40 - Silk Wever
Jane -do- - 40
Amos -do- Jun - 20 - Silk Wever
Jane -do- - 15
Joseph Ellis ~ - 9
Note:
"Wever" is written as such
"Sen" and "Jun" follow the name in the name box - presumably meaning senior and junior
There is a short squiggle (not "do") after Joseph Ellis, so I don't know if his surname is Ellis or if the enumerator got lazy and put a squiggle in place of "do"
Best Wishes
Linda
P.S. I might have missed them, but for a most unusual first name on the same page, and when I zoomed in further to read it, Amos and family popped up ;D
The unusual name? - Hevernhappuck!! (or something like that! - Maybe it means Heaven help us!)
-
It appears that only one Christian name is entered in 1841 census, so my guess is that ELLIS is Joseph's last name.

Linda,
You have been an immense help.
You are a top sleuth (helped by a strange name as well!).
Many thanks.
Have a good New Year. :D

Glad to be of help, but I cannot take all credit, I was just following up on the info provided by Clincher and Bryant - many hands make light work. ;D
