I am having great difficulty in finding some Irving relatives of mine, but while on a visit to Hoddam cemetery, On a headstone i was looking for was a mention of a boy James Caviens (beware of spelling mistake) I cannot find James in the 1841 census for Dumfries where he would be 11 and living hopefully with his parents, it is his mother i am particulrly trying to find as she must be an irving daughter that i am not aware of -- The monumental inscription is listed below------- can anyone help me unravel this mystery
In memory of John Irving son of James Irving in Bank of Hoddom who died 19th June1807 aged 4 years. Also James Irving his son who died 19th July 1819 aged 2 ½ years old. Also Mary Turner spouse of James Irving Bush of Hoddom who died 20th March 1843 aged 66 years and James Caviens their grandson who died at Dumfries 13th June 1847 aged 17 years also Mary Irving who died at Bush of Hoddom 22nd May 1897 aged 77 years

Hi Wallace
Have you managed to track down the marriages of some of the daughters that show for James I. and Mary Turner (some early deaths it would seem, with some names used more than once):
1. ELIZABETH IRVING Christening: 27 JAN 1805 Annan, Dumfries, Scotland
2. AGNES IRVING Christening: 17 MAY 1812 Hoddam, Dumfries, Scotland
3. JANNET IRVING Christening: 25 SEP 1814 Hoddam, Dumfries, Scotland
4. MARY IRVING Christening: 18 JUL 1819 Hoddam, Dumfries, Scotland
5. JANNET IRVING Christening: 24 SEP 1819 Hoddam, Dumfries, Scotland
6. MARY IRVING Christening: 20 JUL 1820 Hoddam, Dumfries, Scotland
The only OPR birth or christening entry I can see for a James C*V* circa 1830s is the following:
10/08/1830 CAVANS JAMES JOHN CAVANS/SARAH IRVING FR161 M Middlebie/DUMFRIES 841/ 0020 0040

Just thought to check the 1841 Census, for Irving family. I think this might be James and Mary with surname mistranscribed for the index. There is a Sarah and a young James that may connect with the above OPR entry (?). Family surname is transcribed as IRVRAY:
James, 65, farm servant
Mary, 65
Sarah, 35, agr. lab
Christy, 15
James, 10
Mary Hunton, 2
Address: Bank Of Hoddam, Hoddam

thanks all for replying-if i could give you some background.you have the right family Monica. Sarah Irving died in 1861 aged given on death certificate 60 so she was born circa 1800. i know that she had a boy John Irving born abt 1845 and he died 1st Nov 1858 at Bush Hoddom. It is possible that Sarah is James Caviens but i am thinking more of the Jannet you mentioned born 24th Sept 1819 Hoddom as the mother of James Caviens.
Christy (listed as female)is another possibility because i cannot trace her either does not appear with family in 1851 census
The james you refered too aged 10 in the 1841 census is listed as female this could be an enumerator mistake or it could be female because later generations are called jamesina(jemima) probably after the grandfather--i hope you can see why i need help to decipher because it is quite complicated and

Hi,
Just picked up your message re: James Caviens. He was actually James Cavans, illigitimate son of John Cavans and Sarah Irving who would have been the daughter of James Irving and Mary Turner of Bank of Hoddom. Baptism entry reads:
"10 th Aug. 1830 - John Cavans at Walls and Sarah Irving of the Parish of Hoddom had a son baptised James who was illigitimately born on 29th June last."
My husband descends from John Irving born 1810 in Hoddom, son of James and Mary.
