Hi Sharon
I dont think your chap is scruffy at all!!!
The 1908 pattern web belt is weighed down by his bayonet...His trousers and tunic have creases in them and the Wolsely pattern helmet has rather a fancy pugree on it.
I think he may have just come off a parade!! The parade field my well have been muddy...hence the boots!!!
The reason I say parade is that he is obsensibly smart, and only carries a bayonet. This is drill order. The picture was taken outside of the UK, because of the helmet. I would hazard Egypt???
Do you have any dates/more details on this chap??? It would be great if you could post the original pic on its own....
-
i will give it a go,dont hold your breath lol,
all i know is that he lived in harrow, middlesex, not great i know, just thought that might give him a middlesex regiment but then im a bit fick when it comes to militaria
-
well thats one extreme to the other isnt it!! told you not to hold your breath, want me to try again?? i dont know how to take the pictures off!!
he was born in 1899 if that is any use, sorry i dont know anymore :-\
-
Don't worry Sharon...we'll give this a go!!
My great uncle went from Northampton/Buckinghamshire border to sign up with the Somerset Light Infantry in Taunton!!! So, residence and birthplace don't necessarily equate with Regiment joined!!!
Born 1899?? I was thinking mid 1920s actually!!
Good effort with the pic....but if you could scan the original, we might be able to see some detail on the helmet or somewhere
-
i have come to the conclusion that ancestors are all off their rockers lol

How's this?

Bummer....
Sorry...Can't even make out the model of the bayonet he has...
Well....we do know mid 1920s/early thirties latest...Middle East/India.
Have you any ephemera around that may point to where he served??? Or perhaps you could contact Kentigern House to get his records....£30 I know...but would answer some questions...

Bad hair day then???? ;D
-
lol,im more worried about the bad face day :o ;D
-
Sorry...Being a complete saddo at this time of night/morning...(billy no mates)
Have been looking at his boots....they look like they have no toe caps...that means he could be younger than I first thought...could be 1917/8....
Curiouser and curiouser....
If he was discharged after 1922 Kentigern House, Historical Disclosures Section would be the way forward....
-
looking at his uniform a couple of things that stick out
the uniform is late WW1 economy issue (no pleats in top pockets),
there are no collar dogs (prior 1922),
he's wearing khaki service dress with a tropical helmet, I think he has just arrived in the middle east and not been kitted out properly yet
the bayonet is very long, longer than the 1917 patt issue, i know the territorials used older equipment until being resupplied in france, I am not sure when the 1917 bayonet was updated but I don't think it was undated by a longer model
no medal ribbons visable

just to show you the difference between a tropical uniform and standard SDs
