Hello
I am researching my family and i have got some information on my nans family who lived in harper hey, Manchester, and i was wondering if anyone had more information on them. I dont know what my great grandfathers name is, although his last name is GADD. He was born in around 1895-1905 but i am not exactly sure what date. He married EMILY CUTLER who is also believed to have been born around the turn of the century.
They had 5 children, WILLIAM- who was killed in service in Monte Casino, July 1944(see armed forces, labelled MONTE CASINO), Violet, who lives in Manchester, I believe, Joyce (who is my nan) and her twin sister Rose(deceased) and Walter. this is all i know about my nans family.
I would be very grateful if anyone has any information.
Thanks

I can really see only one candidate:

RG13/3755 112 5
Manchester
5 Barlow St
Gadd William, head, 39, Beerhouse Keeper
Frances, wife, 37
Ada, dau, 18, Leather Bag Maker
Emma, dau, 16, ditto
Ethel, dau, 13
Robert, son, 6
Walter, son, 2 mo
All born Manchester.
Do any of the names ring a bell?
Otherwise the Gadd/Cutler marriage cert would give you their father's names.

Make sure you view every quarter of every year ...
I've done that numerous times for all the births, marriages and deaths which I can't find in the indexes. You can build up quite a speed after a while :) Everyone I've looked for in this way, I've found. Occasionally it can take longer than you might imagine - when (as in a couple of my cases) the relatives were over 90 when they died. Just be methodical.
You start with a known date (for deaths, the latest date you know they were alive) and work forwards.
But remember to keep a note of where you're up to ...
I just have a sheet of paper with all the years down one side, and then I just write in 1, 2, 3, 4 as I check quarter 1, Q2, Q3, and Q4 of each year. I also find it useful to have a column to the left of the year, giving my relative's approximate age in that year - one less place for the eye to look when you spot a possible match.
On Ancestry, it will always open at the first page of the first letter of the surname that you choose, but most of the time you can guess the page where your surname will be and just type that straight in as soon as you can, rather than waiting for the first page to load.

If "Francis" is Emily's mother then F must have married after 1901 (and E born after 1901) because I can't find that combination.
I always thought Francis with an "I" was male and with "E" female - ah well.
-
I can't either, Merc.
Are you sure it's not Robert's mother who was Frances, Matt?
-
it could be im not sure
-
I suggest you order the marriage cert and come back to us :D

Hi Matt, my name is Jordan Gadd and I think we're distant relatives! I know this original post is quite old but I just felt obliged to reply anyway so here goes. My dad's name is Michael Gadd and my grandad was Francis Gadd. Francis Gadd was born in 1928, his dad was Frank Gadd (my great granddad) who was born in 1905. Frank Gadd was Robert Gadd's brother, I believe Frank was the youngest sibling. Robert Gadd's full DOB was 14/12/1894, he married Emily Cutler in 1922. Emily Cutler was born: 11/08/1901. Our great granddad's were siblings! Perhaps we could help each other learn more about our ancestors? I hope you see this and reply! All the best, Jordan.

Hi Jordan,
Nice to hear from you. Yes, it seems we are third cousins through Robert and Frank Gadd!
I don’t really use Rootschat much these days, but I think if you make a couple more posts on the forums you gain the ability to private message and I can pass on my email address.
Speak soon
Matt :)
