Hi all I wonder if you can help me because I have very little info to go on.
I am looking for my Great Grandmother who according to the 1901 census was born in Lichfield in Staffordshire. Now I have found her birth record in BMD and it is 1864 but I cannot find her on the 1871, 1881 or 1891 census.
At some time she married a William Haywood and I can find her as Mary Haywood on the 1901 but other than that I am lost. Her maiden name is Mary Whetton.
Can you please help me if you have 5 mins. It is driving me potty.
Kind regards
Liz

Hi Liz,
Do you have acess to census?
In 1871, there's a likely candidate St Michael Staffordshire
RG10/2914 34 10
Give me a shout it you need me to transcribe details :)
-
you're supposed to be on Hols Tati ;D
RG10/2914; Folio: 34; Page: 10 - St Michael, Lichfield, Leicestershire
Address is Militia Stores(?), Birmingham Road
Father George is a Sarjeant in the 1st Stafford Militia....

Hi I do have the census but how do you put in those details?
I have found the bit on ancestry that you use to do it. But nothing came up
It is asking for.

leave everything else BLANK :D

Got it!!!
Many many thanks for that. That certainly seems to be correct and to fit in. When you look at the actual census it does seem to say Whetton and not Whelton.
Fantastic!!! Now I know what her parents were called as well.
-
The family is still in Lichfield in 1881

But has Mary become Ann ?
-
Liz - yep, welcome to the world of mis-transcription ! ;)
If you get her marriage Cert, hopefully it will confirm Georges name and occupation ...

It is really strange because from the 1871 census that you guys have just found there are two Jane Ellen Whelton as well. One a baby and one two ??? The baby Jane Ellen when you click on her it then says son ??? How mad is that?
Now Mary has turned into Ann on the 1881 census. What kind of family am I from :-[ LOL

That is the birth record I have of her as well. I have no idea why she would be known as Ann. Unless it was a family name for her?? Everything else she is Mary. How strange

From the kids ages in 1891, either they married 1881 ish, or William brought kids with him from a previous marriage.
Ada and 'Lottie' are the link to 1901 ...

Also missing from 1881 census is Eliza Whetton who seems to be Marys Mother. There is a death record I have just found here
Long link made shorter (http://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?indiv=1&db=FreeBMDDeath%2c&rank=0&=%2c%2c%2c%2c%2c%2c%2c%2c%2c%2c%2c%2c%2c%2c%2c%2c%2c&gsfn=Eliza&gsln=Whetton&sx=&gs1co=3251%2cEngland&gs1pl=5284%2cStaffordshire&year=&yearend=&sbo=0&ufr=0&srchb=r&prox=1&ti=5538&ti.si=0&gss=angs-d&fh=3&recid=35808614&recoff=1+2)
This looks like it could be her what do you think? Poor girl she was only in her 30s.

Looks like the Ann we found in 1881 is not your lass ...

Now that looks like them yes ;D The name Hayward is always bugging me as that was my maiden name for 27 years so I know how annoying it is spelled Hayward but it is Haywood. Everything else seems to fit okish. I know there is certainly an Ada and Lottie from living relatives. Also I have found them on the 1901 census listed correctly. William was born in Orton though in Leceistershire not Heston as listed in the 1891 census. Do you think that is still ok?
Gertrude seems to have vansihed bewteen the two census as well but as she was 9 in 1891 she may have married before the 1901 census came about. The others on the 1901 were all under 10 when the 1901 census came out.
It certainly looks like them :D

:(
Do you think that the name Ann was a mistake? They have made a mistake with name on the earlier census haven't they with Jane Ellen?
-
I'd go with it - subject to belt-and-braces with Marriage Cert - and one of the kids certs to check maiden name if you really really want to be sure ....
-
Here they are in 1881:

re Ann vs Mary on 1881 - who knows ! I've seen the strangest things on a return. The enumerator may have misunderstood, may have copied his schedule incorrectly into the formal return (the image you see on Ancestry) and and and ... :)
We dont know the actual date of the marriage 1Q 1881 - I'm just assuming it had to be before the census (Census was taken on the night of 3 April 1881) .... and people do get enumerated in 2 places at once very occasionally ...
All the other points about missing daughters from 91 to 01 can probably be explained ...
-
Well spotted Tati .... now who is Ann with George Whetton in 1881 then :o ::)
-
Errr ... je ne sais pas ;D
-
Doh - she's on the 1871 - a year older than Mary ..... never noticed as we didnt transcribe that entry ... ::)
-
Snap, Newfy :P
-
Liz - the other 'mystery' - you mentioned 2 Jane Ellens on the 1871.
The 2nd one is an UNNAMED son I'd say - it isnt a 'ditto' under Jane Ellen, just a line :)
And in 1881 a 10 year old George C would seem to confirm it .... 8)
-
Doh - she's on the 1871 - a year older than Mary ..... never noticed as we didnt transcribe that entry ... ::)
LOL you two are confusing me. God knows how you are finding this stuff I wish I could!!
OK so I now have Mary living with her Mother in law and new husband in 1881. That is cool.
What are you saying about the problem with Ann/Mary Whetton??
-

Is there still a problem? ??? :P

Yes there is an Ann and a Mary on 1871 but on the 1881 Mary has vanisihed. Maybe she is in hospital or maybe staying with a friend or relative?
-
Mary is married to William by then 8)
