Title: looking for Astle
Post by: kiwirach on Friday 13 April 07 07:27 BST (UK)
hi there, i'm looking for some Astles, however i dont have very much to go on, so i'm hoping my small amount of info might ring a bell with anyone!!.

i'm looking for any info on Joseph and Mary Astle, who had at least one son in about 1830 named William.
thats all i have....i dont know Joseph or Mary's dates of birth or marriage. there may well be other children.

i'm wondering if anyone has searched for their Astles, have a Joseph and Mary, who had a son called William who has disappeared by the 1841 census.

i am descended from this young William who was sent to NZ  as a child prisioner.

the info has been taken from Williams marriage certificate in NZ, stating his parents and place of birth. i guess theres a chance the names could be wrong, the spelling of Astle could be different!.

this is just a shot in the dark really, as i'd love to know more about this young lads backgroud!.

thanks for any help received.

Hi Kiwirach,

Welcome to Rootschat.

Did it state on William's marriage certificate exactly where in Staffordshire he was born?  It might help to pin the family down.

It looks as if he was on his way to Australia/NZ by 1841.

(This link says that the trial was 1834.4 but another link says that it is 1839.4 which fits better with his age/birth. It may be worth looking at the original).

Charles Apted (the man he stole from) was an innkeeper in Uttoxeter in 1841.

I wonder if he ever met any of his family again.

There is a Joseph Astle (+ wife Mary) having a tough time in Staffordshire in 1819.
Might be connected; Burton is close to Uttoxeter.

(see under Repton: RM4/104)

This couple could well be the ones who turn up in Bradford in 1851:

HO107/2308/33
Joseph Astley, 53, lodger, railway porter, b Bretby, Derby
Mary Astley, 58, b Weston on Trent, Derby

...but there is no evidence that they are your Joseph and Mary.

There are actually quite a lot of Joseph Astleys in the area.

Hi Richard,

It was a sad outcome for this couple with Joseph being sent to Burton-on-Trent and Mary Leicestershire.  Would they have gone into workhouses?  They were living in an area of Repton, Derbyshire which is not far from Uttoxeter.  If this is the correct couple they must have come back to the area either when their son was born or earlier.

thank you Richard for all that info, i do appreciate it, as i have no idea where to start looking for this family. i've only just found this was the county William was born in. prior to this i have no idea of his history before he arrived in NZ.

oh, and you wondered if he ever met his family again. i dont believe he did. he re-offended for a while when he first got to NZ, then he settled down, eventually married a Maori woman and had a family. theres nothing in his biography to suggest he ever saw them again.....all really rather sad...he was only 12 when he was sent out.
