Hi all, In 1841 census for Anne Hepper in Littleham, exmouth she seems to be in some sort of work place ( they are all women ). Any ideas as to where she is and what do you think it says in the column before their names. On the first page it has a number then the word beacon, bye the way she was 15 then. Cheers, Phil

She's a Female Servant (FS) in the Butler Household at 23, Beacon ..... at the bottomn of the lh page its says 'Carried up', so I'd guess that the words at the top of the rh page are 'Brought up' or similar meaning - signifying that the Household continued ...

Thankyou both very much. I agree Ricky as ive now looked back. It must have been a large hotel. It looks like it may be called the Beacon Grange or Gorge. If this is so and the beacons are numbered i wonder i, Philf it was an annexed hotel, Phil

Hi all, I’m looking for more info on Ann Hepper and looking at her marriage certificate in 1845 she was down as full age. Her father was William. As far as I can see from when I had ancestry.co.uk the only birth that fits is 1826 in Littleham. Has anyone got access to Devon records or/and her parents marriage etc. thanks in advance, Phil.

If she really was full age she would have to be born in 1824 or earlier.  In 1851 she is aged 30 and place of birth is Cruwys Morchard.

Is there an occupation for her father on the marriage?  Who were the witnesses as they can be helpful if related.

-
In 1841 the enumerator has actually followed the rules and all ages are rounded down, so Ann is aged anywhere between 15 and 19.

Her father William was a labourer and the witnesses look like Richard Hewish and Thomas Wotton?

Could it be "Beacon Hill"? One of the 1841 entries reads "Library, Beacon" and the entry before that looks like "Beacon Hill"? The page is headed "Parish of Littleham"

An item in an 1837 Exmouth newspaper is headed "EXMOUTH - Public Rooms and Library on the Beacon Hill"

This parish map would appear to cover Beacon Hill?

Just found some info online. Beacon hill house was first built as part of a crescent started in 1820. It is now a grade 2 listed building. I’m wondering if Ann Hepper born close by then worked there in 1841. Just need a birth or marriage of father William to ?
