Title: HOW ABOUT A WELSH ROOTSCHAT MEET?
Post by: Amy K on Tuesday 30 November 04 10:18 GMT (UK)
On Saturday, at Dudley, Kazza and I discussed the possibility of a "regional" meet for us Welshies.

We could have this in the New Year sometime in say Cardiff or Swansea or .... .

Anyway, lets hear what you think - Good and Bad.

Well now you know what I am going to say! ~ Yes! ;D
I will need adequate notice. I am in West Glamorgan, would prefer something in my region, but I am prepared to travel.

The north of Wales may be too far for me though  :-\

I'm a bit new here but wouldn't mind a meeting - I live in Newport Gwent.

In the spirit of Devolution, I'm in full agreement.

Cardiff is excellent, never been to Swansea, so I can't comment. But Cardiff is at least a  4-5 hour drive from my parents and Swansea probably even more.

As most of my research is based in the North, and my parents still live there AND if I'm flying in anyway, I'd like to pledge for a more northern freindly venue.

Or a compromise. How about Aber? There's the National Library there as well. And easier for me to reach from B'ham international.

Can't promise anything as I'll have to fit it in with work and family anyway, but let me know in good time and I'll do my best.

I am very keen on the idea.  ;D

I am in mid-wales so anywhere is easy enough for me with adequate notice to make arrangements.

Does that mean you would come GL?

I am not a Welsh speaker so I hope there will be some english spoken.

Amy, that is such a difficult list to choose one from.

Wrecsam would be ideal because I could then make use of my Clwyd FHS membership.
Hay on Wye because of the books
Cardiff, because its simply Cardiff
Aber - v.central, llgc, tons of dead rellies. Can also tie in with Ysbyty Ystwyth, Tregaron, Llanbadarn, Ystrad Fflur

Bangor, umm, the Octagon? Got banned from there a few years ago, after a friend got his nose broken (not by me). Some good pubs though.
Welshpool????? :P

Other, now you're talking:
Llanllyfni - could fly into Caernarfon airport!
Conwil Caio - Dying to find out what on earth possessed a forebear to move there. :P
Cwmbach - mining heritage
St Davids - 2 trips there is worth one to Rome!   :o
Holyhead - could also make a trip to Britains saddest railway station - full of English pensioners

sorry, getting carried away now.  I've made my choice, but I'll live with whatever decisions made. ;D ;D ;D

Hmmmmm, a Rootschat meet in Winter?
South Wales , means having to drive over the Beacons.
Aberystwyth, means having  to negotiate Devils Bridge.
North wales, having to get round the Horseshoe Pass.
I'm voting for Hay On Wye. ;D

I am new here too, Cardiff was my choice, but Newport would be fine too.

I'm in the South Wales Valleys and am not a Welsh speaker.

It's great to find so many helpful people on this site, really love it,

I would not mind Cardiff, Swansea or Newport.
But this is a long way to travel from the north so perhaps 2 meets one south and one north.

The first RootsChatters meet was at the Black Country Museum. If we follow their example, perhaps we should meet at the Welsh Folk Museum at St Fagans (nr Cardiff) ?

Although I wouldn't mind going to a Records Office with some experienced people. Most of my research has been done from handed-down family notes, on-line databases, and family history census CD's etc.

The more meets the merrier, then sometime a meet will coincide with one of my trips to Britain  ;D

My brother lives in Llantrisant so I could combine a family visit with a RootsChat meet,
preferably at St. Fagans - a great place for a wander around !

Oh yes, St Fagans, a great place to meet! You can't get more historic than that!  ;D

St Fagans (Museum of welsh life) is ok with me too
& free entry, just £2 for car parking

Great idea

Mind you, I would be coming from Switzerland, so it might be a bit difficult. I don't get back to the UK as often as I might, so maybe this would add some impetus for me.

Me Too, Me Too, Me Too
Oooh just seen this Amy I nearly missed it!
Couldn't manage North Wales but would certainly meet Cardiff, Merthyr Tydfil, Newport anywhere near the M4?
St.Fagans sounds good, but the Record Office would be great too, especially with someone to show us the ropes.

Another choice of meeting place would be one of the family history fairs - this is on another thread too I think. There will be a Sunday Fair at the leisure Centre in LLantrisant on 17th April 2005 and that way people could combine a fair with a meet and have a wonderful time. The Llantrisant fair is always a good one Glam FHS is usuallythere and Gwent FHS plus a few other Welsh Societies and the national Library - at least they were there last year and Gathering the jewels was theree last year, the Federation bookshop the SoG, GOONS, and some commercial firms Back to Roots etc so there would be lots to see and more people to tell about this forum

I will be there wearing my Gwent FHS shirt and in charge of their stall - I always go to Llantrisant because of the good bacon Rolls they do there, after carrying all the stuff into the place and getting the stall ready the bacon rolls come as a wonderful pick me up AND they keep you going until the thing closes at 5pm :D

Cardiff is good for me but depending on time of year can travel further as I am near  M4.
Welsh seriously basic!
Cheers and Season's Greetings.

Llantrisant is easily accessible from the M4 junction 34.

Anyone who can make it would be made welcome.

Don't forget about the toll fee to enter Wales at the Severn Bridge - there is no charge to get back into England.

I'm not welsh either, but any chance of meeting other RootsChatters must be a good idea.

My brother lives in Llantrisant, so at least I have a bed there !
He hasn't asked me to trace his (welsh) wife's ancestors (Davis and Thompson) - yet !  ;D

the Family History Fair is being held in the Leisure Centre from 10 am to 5pm. I will be there because I am in charge of the Gwent FHS stall. so there's a rallying point. On the other hand I am hoping that the refreshments will be as last year because their bacon butties are just to die for and that would also be a good rallying point

So that looks pretty clear, then.

Ann, we meet up at the Gwent FHS stall and drag you off for a bacon buttie and a cuppa   ;D  ;D

At staggered intervals, of course, so you can really fill up on bacon butties  ;D

Hi everyone,

I'm hoping to make it as I live near Newport...but I have to say I have a terrible driving record in this area.  I was working in Cwmbran and driving home the first night I ended up in Usk!  :-[ So I'm hoping it is really easy to find or you never know where I'll end up, Birmingham perhaps  ???

As the fair is on from 10am - 5pm, it may be worth "coordinating" a time when we are all there at the same time. Some people may only be able to come for a couple of hours and it would be a shame if we all missed each other.

Well I sure missed all the Rootschatters!  ::)

I did go and thoroughly enjoyed & came away with some goodies!  ;D

Unfortunately I did not bump into any other Rootschat users  :( I was at the fair from 11:30 - 2:30pm My 4 yr old couldn't cope with her boredom any more!  ;D so I had no choice but to come away without seeing any of you.

Did chat to many others in the same genealogical circles as myself though so came away happy.

Hope you all enjoyed too!

I was there too, on the Gwent FHS stand with my husband and grandson. Met Berlin-Bob - Hi again Bob, and Amy K - Hi Amy - and let me tell you she is cuter than her picture! My grandson was very taken with Amy.
the fair was very busy and I managed one quick walk around at about 3.30pm and then had to rush back when I saw that the Gwent FHS stand was surrounded. I am just about to check the takings for the day and try to balance the stock against the takings - I might not get back here today.

I was there 10.00 until around 11.30 with my wife & baby son.

I had a brief chat with Berlin Bob - I first recognised him from his daughter's drawing, then saw the RootsChat badge.

I saw Ladkyis ( it does look like Ladykis, doesn't it!) on her stall, but didn't have chance to say hello as she was very busy.
Didn't see anyone who looked like AmyK, and we must have just missed WelshJen and family by minutes.

Our son (now 14 mths old) was getting restless as he had been awake since 6am.
We had to leave to take him home for feeding & his afternoon nap - otherwise he would have screamed the place down!

We did come away with plenty of items to aid with our research, though.

Perhaps next year we should co-ordinate our timings a bit better. Or even have our own RootsChat stall...

Why wait until next year? Gwent FHS Open Day - free admission - Is at County Hall Cwmbran on June 11th from 10am to 4pm. Refreshments available and at the last count there will be 48 different stands.

This time there could be a decision on a specific time to gather - and a place. I would say 12 noon in the Foyer and wear a badge or something! or there is Powys Open day on August 6th. The Flash Leisure Centre, Salop Road, Welshpool

Or there is Gloucester Open Day on April 23rd at the Crypt School,

OH and did you know that there is a difference between a family history fair and a family history Open Day? Well, you have to pay to get into a fair but Open Days are free - I suppose that's why they are called "open" days. Duh! That was me having a bimbo moment! :-[
