my GGG grandmother was Caroline Pollard, the illegitimate daughter of Mary Pollard and John Fielder. She was born in Totton, Hants in 1823
Her father was John Fielder, Shoemaker, who I think was born in West Wellow about 1794. Is anyone else researching this family?

Hi Jason
I've reached a dead-end with my Fielder, but I think yours and mine could well be connected. My gggrandmother was Elizabeth Fielder. Censuses indicate she came from Romsey and was born about 1818. Her father was William Fielder, also a shoemaker. Since trades ran in families, if one of us gets any further we might both do so!

Hi again Jason!
I've been looking in the 1841 census for West Wellow and there are quite a few Fielders there who are shoemakers and it does look like a single family. My ggg grandfather, William Fielder, looks like one of them, although he had moved to neighbouring Plaitford by then.
There is a James Fielder, born around 1860, who looks like the father of both our ancestors. I shall be checking the parish records, hopefully, in the next few days and will post anything interesting I find.
If you don't have access to the 1841 census and want to know anything particular, please let me know.
regards

Further to my above ramblings, and thanks to the excellent Hackman Series of Hampshire Bishops Transcripts
(see http://prtsoc.org.uk), this is what I think might have been happening with the Fielders of Wellow.
In 1786 Benjamin Fielder married. According to the Bishops transcripts, he married Ann Allen, but he's always shown with wife Elizabeth, so I think this is an error :o
In 1787 James Fielder married Ann Allen
Benjamin and Elizabeth had (at least) the following children -
Sarah - baptised 1788 aged 13 months
John - 1791
Mary Ann - 1793 (married Moses Rogers of Sherfield English 1815)
James - 1795 (married Martha Hood of Plaitford 1815, died 1825)
William - 1798
Joshua - 1801
Charles - 1803
James and Ann had the following -
Sarah - died 1791
John - 1793
Elizabeth - 1795
Edward - 1797 (married Mary Ann Cooper - Sherfield 1827)
William - 1799
Sarah - 1801
Robert - 1803 (married Sarah Penny 1825)
Mary - 1805
Dinah - 1808
I reckon it's quite likely that Benjamin and James were brothers. A look at the parish records proper may give Benjamin's wife's name, or may not! Because West Wellow parish records are now held in Hampshire Record Office, not Wiltshire as I thought, I haven't been able to look at them.
Your John Fielder and my William Fielder could both come from either family since they seemed to have the irritating habit of giving their recently born children the same names! I've found a marriage for one william and a death for the other, but still can't sort out which one was my gg grandmother's father :(
How does all this compare with your researches? Any extra information you have will be very gratefully received :)
Best wishes

My gggrandmother was Mary Ann Fielder of Plaitford and her father was William Fielder, a cordwainer. In 1846 she married Zachariah Brown in the parish church Romsey. Elizabeth Fielder was one of the witnesses. Her sister perhaps? Looks like this links to your family Angela.

It certainly does link to my family! I'm sending you a PM so that we can perhaps swap a bit more information....

I've just discovered that my Greatgreatgreatgrandfather was Zackariah Brown who married Mary Ann Fielder in 1846 in Romsey, Hants. I wondered if anyone could give me more information on either of them, their families etc.

Hi Rhodiegirl and welcome to RootsChat :)
I can certainly give you lots of information about Mary Ann Fielder. She was my gg grandmother, Elizabeth Ann Fielder's sister and, as far as I can tell, the first legitimate child of that marriage.
Mary Ann Fielder had a rather complicated life. I've never actually found Zackariah Brown, as the censuses mainly have her living with John Turner.
I'll happily send you more information but you have to have 3 posts before we can send private communications (Personal Messages), so if you reply to this post and then reply to another one, we should be able to get going.
Best wishes

Zachariah Brown and Mary Ann Fielder were my greatgreatgrand parents and I have a copy of their marriage certificate. My great grandmother was Elizabeth Brown. Please get in touch as this is fascinating!

Wow Kevin ;D (and welcome to RootsChat :))
If you reply to this post, you'll also be able to send a PM and get in touch with us directly.
I'm really excited about the marriage certificate you have. I know it was in 1846 but haven't yet sent off for it.
I've been looking for Elizabeth's descendants for ages. Do you have records of who she married?

Hi again Rhodiegirl,
I would love to know which or Zachariah's children you are descended from.
