Title: Look up 1851 Census for Davies
Post by: Cabes on Tuesday 30 November 04 06:32 GMT (UK)
Hi

I am after details of a David Davies who was born around 1847/48.  I have found him on the 1871 census which says he was born in Brecon, Brecon, however on the 1891 census it says he was born in Brecon, Pontsemay.  Any help would be much appreciated, thanks.

Hi Cabes,

Welcome to Rootschat.  ;D

As you can imagine Davies is a fairly common name in Breconshire.

I am having a look for him,  but can you give me some further details.  The family as they appear in the 1871 would be a start,  and anything you know about parents or siblings will help.

Kazza.

Hi there,

I have searched through my disc and as suspected there are lots that meet the age criterior.  There is no mention of Pontsemay in connection with any of them  though.

I have also searched all the Brecon ED Parishes and it does not appear there.

Kazza.

Hi Kazza

thanks for the quick response. OK here's the story. David Davies is my great grandfather who married a Sarah Denis.  I have found a DD on the 1871, 1881 and 1891 census but each one states a different place of birth. Opps sorry, I just realised I got the details the wrong way around, this is what I have found:

1871 age 23; Weaver; born Brecon, Pontsemay; wife Sarah; born Carmarthen, Llandilo
1881 age 33; weaver; born Carmarthen, Mothvey; wife Sarah; Born Carmarthen, Brynaman.
1891 age 44; weaver; born Brecon, Brecon; wife Sarah; born Carmarthen, Brynaman.

As you can see I am a bit confused.  I am assuming of course that they are all the same DD, it seems very likely with this evidence. If I can identify where he was born, i am hoping to find a birth certifcate and hence his parents.
Pontsemay is interseting as I can't find any reference to such a place either.

If you can't find any reference under Breconshire records, then maybe he was born in Mothvey, in which case you have still been very helpful.

I hope this information helps, thanks again.

Hi again,

The problem here is that these are the possibles I have identified,  and without being sure of the parents it is going to be difficult to see which of them he is.

Hi Kazza

great stuff, I realise with a name like Davies it's not going to be easy, I've yet to persue my Evans and Williams side yet, that'll be interesting.

The only name that strikes me is the one born in Myddfai, apparently Myddfai is Mothvey, this is the only connection I can see. Is it possible to find him on the 1861?

Thanks a lot

Mike

Hi mike

I have never heard of pontesmay either.
Is the transcription clear.
If not, could it be partishow.
In what county was david in 1871?

I had a look at carmarthen 51 and there are two david davies aged 4 in myddfai.
If Kazza cannot find him in brecs i can post details of carmarthen.

Hi Rhys

thanks for your help. Pontsemay is a real mystery, the census record is very clear, there's no other interpretation of the word.  I'm not familiar enough with place names around the Brecon area to do a comparison with other towns.

In 1871 David was living in Llangatock, Carmarthenshire.  I get the feeling that he is probably one of the Myddai Davids, of course the big question is which one.

The only other bit of information that might identify him is that he was a woolen weaver or spinner, I wonder whether his father may have had the same profession.

I appreciate your help Rhys, thanks

Mike

Hi SarahJane

excellent suggestion, I have attached the entry in question, when you zoom in it is possible that it could be Pontsenny, what do you think?

Perhaps the family is in Carmarten shire in 1861.

Hi Rhys

excellent, this looks very promising, I am 99% sure it is Pont senny (Sennibridge), and the weaving link makes sense. It looks like they moved to Carmarthenshire, as Joshua senior was from there. I feel comfortable accepting that this is my ancestor.

This has been most helpful, I am grateful for the combined resources of such a dedicated group. I'll see where this leads me, I'll probably be back, thanks again

If Mike Cabe is still in contact I would love to get in touch with hime, I just found this topic by accident putting a few names into google.  Joshua Davies is my 2xgt. grandfather, so we must be related.

annwyl Mike,
Could you tell me where your David Davies is living in 1871 & 1881, I might be able to help then. Richard Lawton. "The Census & Social Structure". 1978. Cass, has a chapter on "errors" in the census returns. The various birthplaces -Pontsenni, Mothvey, Brecon-he puts down as possibly "a niggardly attitude to government authority".
The best error I have found is the girl named Sydney(Defynog ca. 1871-1891) in one return she is a girl and in the next a boy.

My Davies Family - 1841 father Joshua 35, living Sennybridge, woollen M, born this county.
1851 Sennybridge wooln factory, Joshua, 45, wool carder, born Llanfairbryn, Carmarthen.
1861 Factory, Mothvey, Myddfai, Carmarnshire Joshua, 55, wool manufacturer, born Llanfairbryn.
Can't find them on the 1871 census - any ideas?
1881 Ithink this is them - living in Jankin Square, Llangattock, Breckonshire - Joshua widower, age 75, wool carder, born Carmarthenshire, Llandovery ?
Would like to make contact with Mike Cabes who posted the original message many years ago as we may be related.
Thanks
