Hi Lynne,
Have you found him on the census at all?
Prue

yes in 1841 age 9 living at brougham place also in 1851 then 1861 south church road lynne

Hi Lynne :)
I found him in 1871, at Hestops or Heslops Gardens. He's shown as a Printer's Compositor.
What was it that you were hoping to find out about him?
-
hi thats him i am trying to find out if he worked for somebody or was it a shop really any information would help
-
In the 1858 Directory he is listed as a Printer & Bookseller in South Church lane. In 1851 he is a 'Printer's Apprentice', 1861 a 'Letterpress Printer', and in 1871 a 'Printer's Compositor'. It seems he set up in business as a Printer & Bookseller, but ended up working for someone as a 'Printer's Compositor'. You don't say what the dates are of the Directories in which he is listed as a Printer and Photographer. He was 19 in 1851 not 1841 :)

Hi,
I am not 100 % sure abt. the man in the picture. I believe it is my 2nd great grandmothers brother. His name is William Soulsby b. abt 1812. He lived in the village of Sunny Brown, Auckland, Bishop Auckland. I do not know of any others in our direct line who lived in that area. I tried to attach the photo, its not working.
Sorry, I will try again another time.

Hi Lynne, My name is Cameron, I have an antiques business here in New Zealand. I was just about to sell a family photograph albumn with a number of photographs by your great great grand father Thomas Bates. I came across this website by chance while attempting to find out where he came from. If you are interested I can send you images of the photographs, there are many photographs by other photographers, some from Bishop Auckland, most from UK and at least a couple from Australia and New Zealand.
Kindest Regards
Cam
