Title: Abraham Tarrant 1851 and 1891 Census
Post by: lady_spurs on Thursday 05 April 07 20:25 BST (UK)
Hi,
I wonder if anyone can help.  I am looking for Abraham Tarrant.
b.1816 in Greywell, Hampshire and married to Hannah.I have found him in the 1841(under Turrent),1861,1871, and 1881. I believe he died in 1892. Hannah was born in Lincolnshire in 1827, I can't find any details of their marriage either.
If anyone can help or point me in the right direction it will be very much appreciated.

Thanks,
lady_spurs

Hi,
Thankyou Ricky and Valda. I have John and Ann as Abraham's parents. The marriage you found is very interesting as I have their first child Harriet as being born in 1854/55. They also had a son called George William, b. 1859, names which could relate to the Graby family, although I am still slightly confused as to why Abraham called himself William.
Thankyou again for taking the time to help me, it's much appreciated.

It would appear that Abraham's marriage to Hannah was his second marriage and that he married first Charlotte Boxall. She died and he was left with two young daughters Maria and Sarah (you will need to get certificates or check the parish registers of Greywell and possibly Odiham to prove or disprove this, since the 1841 census does not state relationships).
On the 1851 census the two girls are in a Union School (so it would appear they were sisters), as in the poor law union. This means they were chargeable to the local poor law union rate payers who were paying for their board and  up keep. For this to happen it would appear that Abraham sometime after the death of his wife seems to have deserted his children. His mother Ann was dead - his father John in his late 50s. The children were placed in the workhouse system.
Since Abraham was able bodied and therefore could support his children, the local poor law union would be interested in his whereabouts since he owed them for the maintenance of his children. He could be fined and gaoled in the petty sessions for non-payment if found.

Hi Valda,
That's brilliant, I will get certificates or maybe check parish records. Now that you have explained so well it all seems to make sense.
I thought Charlotte was his sister which is probably why I was confused! And it might explain why he moved from Hampshire to Lincolnshire.
Thankyou for your help.

I think you can enquire here for Odiham parish register look ups

http://www.netlists.net/odiham-society/genealogy.html

I can't see any baptisms for Maria or Sarah in the transcription of Greywell baptisms online.

Hi Valda,

Thankyou, again!

I will contact the odiham society to see if they can point me in the right direction, especially regarding Maria and Sarah.

The baptisms were a great help, now I know who Abraham's brothers and sisters were,  I can further my research.
