Hi genie
With over 300 posts on RC you already know that we here are also "nice guys" ;D
Your photo has been "enhanced" do you have the original? could you post it?
Sadly my initial reaction is that it is a tropical uniform from WW1 or before, and it would appear, from the photo you showed, there is no identifying information on the uniform, in which case that would be the same reaction, no matter which website you lodged it on ;)
Anyway the original would be great if you could get a copy.

oh dear Wendi
I did not mean to offend, I was simply offering an alternative.
Of course everyone here on rootschat are wonderful and have helped not only me but thousands of people with their research.

Yes, I have to agree with Wendi, there are no buttons available for ID, no collar dogs, even the shape of the headress appears to be corrupted.
One would expect to see the headress to be more definitive, ie, it is impossible to determine what actual headgear he is wearing!

Hello to all ..... and thank you for your responses. I am afraid I do not have the original, this was loaned to me as a sort of chalk drawing, which I scanned and was then enhanced on the restoration board. It's my husband's grandfather....born in 1875.
Could this have been in the Boer War by any chance?? Just wondering ....
Thanks....Genie

I would say that the hat is either a "Cawnpore" or "Wolsely" pith helmet from the size of it (coming down strongly on the side of the Wolsely pattern). It is not the helmet type as seen in the Boer War (the Foriegn Service Helmet which was worn until around 1905), which had a pointed front rim.
He is wearing what appears to be KD though...Therefore I would suggest that the pic was done in either the Middle East or India.
This type of uniform was worn from the 1880s through to the 1930s, but given the birth date of the chap, I would suggest 1905ish and India
