Hello
Was very interested to see your post re Ernest Trevor Rice Hill. He was my great uncle. My grandfather, Arthur William Hill, was his brother and I have been trying to trace descendants of his siblings. Would be glad to hear if you have any information.
I have a photo which I understand is of Trevor.
Best wishes

The Findlaysons were supposed to have some info, but they are up Whangarei.
Edith lived in Devonport after the death of her husband and having no children I believe all the stuff went to a findlayson relly.
But this is a big family (HILL) and there is a fair bit of info around.
:)

Hi
This is all I know about the Hill family. If you have any further info, please let me know.
Catherine Rice Nicholson (Mrs Thomas Hill) – Her History as far as is known
Catherine Rice Nicholson was born on 8.6.1843 in Workington, England, the daughter of the Rev.Thomas Dickson Nicholson and Alison Nicholson nee McWhir. She emigrated to NZ with her parents in 1847. She married Thomas Hill of H M Customs, Nelson on 17.6.1863 at Woodstock Park, Stoke, Suburban South, Nelson. Her husband, Thomas Hill, was born in Cork, Ireland in 1831 and emigrated to NZ in 1854. They had fifteen children and at one time lived in an old house called Montecillo at Dunedin. Catherine died on 17.7.1888 (aged 45) at Ponui Island the day after the birth of twin sons. The cause of death was given as haemorrhage following childbirth.
Thomas Hill died in Auckland of heart disease on 12.2.1896 aged 65 when his youngest child, Trevor, was just 7 years old. Other facts know about Thomas Hill: He was appointed Collector of Customs Dunedin in 1867. He made his will in 1882 and retired from the Civil Service in 1892

from others
Catherine Rice NICHOLSON married Thomas HILL on 17th June 1863 at Woodstock
Park, Nelson by the brides father Rev Thomas Dickson NICHOLSON.
Thomas HILL was working I understand as 'H.M. Customs' in Nelson. He
apparently arrived in NZ in 1857 from Cork, Ireland where his family had a
name for church architecture.
Some time after the marriage the HILL's moved to Dunedin where their home
was the well known 'Montecillo' Estate.
They later moved to Auckland where Mr HILL was Collector of Customs at the
time of his retirement.
I am hoping others may have information on this couple and also I am trying
to track down their children and further descendents.
They had 15 children in total.
Information I have so far.
Eldest being twin daughters born about 1864, eldest son was Arthur William
HILL, another the youngest daughter being called Eileen, and the youngest
being twin sons (one called Trevor) born on 16th July 1888. I gather the
following day Catherine the twins mother died at Ponui Island, Hauraki.
I understand also 3 of their sons went to sea, one of them Vivian rising to
command the Royal Mail Steamers 'Niagara and Aorangi'.
Any links with this family from other list members I would love to hear from
you or any other information I would be grateful.
Thought maybe doing a search on a name of Vivian Hill and steam boats might
give me some info but not to this point .. .
I am descended from Rev Thomas Dickson Nicholson but not thru Catherine and
Thomas Hill. But by his younger daughter Janet (Jessie) NICHOLSON's marriage
to Henry Davis WILLIAMS.
Many thanks

My aunt Isabel Sarah Finlayson married Ernest Trevor Rice Hill. Having just started my family tree I would like to make contact with the Hill family.
-
Hello BILLFINLAYSON
I am the granddaughter of Arthur William Hill who was Trevor's eldest brother. If you have read all the previous posts on this thread you will know a lot about the Hill family. I would be happy to answer any other questions, if I can. From what I have heard, Trevor seems to have been an interesting man. I think I have a photo of him. Do you have any pictures of Trevor and Isabel?

Thank you Jane so much for your contact and reply.
I have only photos of my deceased parents. We moved from NZ to NSW in the mid 1950s. I would certainly appreciate a photo of Trevor. Do you have any with he and Isa? Do you know where and when they died, and if they had any children.
I am hoping to make trip back to NZ and revisit with family.
cheers

Yeah,
I am looking for a photo of William Chalmers and Edith Constance Hill, apparently Isabel got all the bits and pieces after Edith died and then it moved into the Findlayson family ... :-\
