I am trying to research my 'Clinton' ancestors in Ireland from 1796 onwards. Before I subscribe to a World membership with Ancestry, could someone confirm whether there are any BMD indexes available in Ireland, and if so, what years do they cover?
Many thanks

No - unfortunately they do not have BMDs for Ireland on Ancestry. They have Parish and Probate records for England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland 1500s-1800s but you can bet the lion's share is not Ireland. When you try to search, the only Irish counties available are Antrim, Down and Louth.
If you would like something looking up on that database, post it here and I will check it for you!

Hi 7/3,
Thanks for the info. I wanted to find out the actual birth of Robert Clinton born 1796 in Ireland (county unknown) and who his parents were. Also, wanted to find a marriage for Robert Clinton and his wife Margaret (surname unknown). I'm assuming they married before 1811 which is when their first child was born.
I glanced at the ancestryireland.com website - would you recommend this or would you know from experience that I may be better off subscribing to that website instead of a World Membership with ancestry.co.uk?
Thanks again,
Winnie

Ancestry Ireland is mainly the Ulster Historical Foundation.
They do have some online databases but )per view sites are very individual, I personally use Ancestry and the old 1837 site. And I also spend a small fortune on Scotlandspeople lol..
I am fortunate to be living in Ireland and can access records in Dublin. BMD records for Ireland only started in 1864 (the GRO for the Republic can be found at www.groireland.ie (http://www.groireland.ie) and for Northern Ireland www.proni.gov.uk (http://www.proni.gov.uk))
Prior to 1864 you are totally dependant on church records and with just a name it will be terribly difficult.
Some counties are getting online with some marvellous data bases for example Co. Clare. http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclare/genealogy/genealog.htm
I hope that you manage to find your elusive rele...
Best wishes

Hi, I checked those names out on Ancestry UK and nothing obviously relating to Ireland comes up.
I will keep a look out for you on my visits to Irish sites. As the previous poster moscan stated - it will not be easy with just a name, but two pairs of eyes are better than one!
