Peter,

The only Thomas BOUGH I can see on 1891 census with a birth date around 1889 was born in Heytesbury, Essex, England.

He is a boarder with Edward and Mary Ann ROSSER in Newcastle Shopshire.

Not much help even if it is your grandad!

Pam,

That makes much more sense for 1901!

If this is Peter's Thomas this would look like the birth registration:

Bough  Thomas    Cookham  2c 384 Sep Q 1890

Can't see a marriage for Edward BOUGH and Harriet though - how frustrating - no wonder Peter's been having trouble  :o

Pete,
I have just googled "Edward Bough Windsor" and found your post from back in 2007.
I don't know how far you have progressed with your search for your grandad?  I have been researching the family of my partner (a Bough) for years now, his father was the youngest brother of your grandad.
Your father's birth certificate states parents as Edward Samuel Bough, general dealer and Harriet Bough, formerly Hammond.  Edward Bough was born in Lambeth on 13 July 1859, and his birth was registered as "Samuel Bough".   Still using the name Samuel, he married Harriet Hammond on 1 June 1879 in Lambeth.
In the 1881 Census, Samuel and Harriet are in Southwark (RG11 0521. F 127 p 27).
At some point they moved to Berkshire and had the following children:
Harriet Agnes, birth reg 1886 June - Cookham 2c 430
Edward Samuel, birth reg 1888 June - Cookham 2c 404
Thomas, born 21 June 1890, birth reg 1890 June - Cookham
John Robert, birth reg 1893 June - Cookham 2c 420
George Spencer, birth reg 1895 March - Cookham 22 425
Victoria Diamond Jubilee, born 7 April 1897 - Windsor
John born 11 December 1900, birth reg 1901 March - Windsor
The family were living in Maidenhead when the Cookham births were registered and in Windsor when the Windsor births were registered.
From the three certificates I bought, it seems that Samuel began to use Edward as a second name and finally, dropped the "Samuel" altogether by the time Victoria and John were born in Windsor, just calling himself Edward Bough.
From the postings back in 2007, you will have seen that the family was split up in the 1901 Census.  Edward's wife, Harriet died later that year, on 30 October 1901 so maybe she was poorly at the time of the Census.  I have never been able to trace Edward's death, although I was told by my partner's mother that he died when John was at a very young age.
Now the 1911 Census is here and I can find only three of the seven children!
John was at Mayford Industrial School in Surrey, Agnes (obviously dropped the Harriet) was in St Pancras, London and Edward "military" was in Alton, Hampshire.
Where are the other four?  I'm unsure from your earlier posting whether your grandfather emigrated to Australia and died there or whether he died in England?
Sorry for the length of the posting.  I look forward to hearing from you.
Nina

My grandmother is Victoria Diamond Jubilee Bough born in Windsor England. I was trying to get some information on her as we have very little and found your site. She was a Bernardo child along with some other siblings and was sent to Canada. Apparently she did not discuss her past much as it was troublesome. She did marry Thomas Noakes in 1918 and had four children, John Ellen Gorden and Shirley. She did pass at the age of 53 in Windsor Ontario. If anyone has any further information I would much appreciate it.

Hello
I have some very basic information about your grandmother.
I have a copy birth certicate: Victoria Diamond Jubilee Bough was born 7 April 1897 at 10 River Street, New Windsor.  Father Edward Bough, a lodging house keeper and mother Harriet Bough, formerly Hammond.  My partner (a Bough) and I have visited Windsor and River Street is a road going down from Windsor Castle to the River Thames.  The building that both your grandmother and my partner's father were born in was demolished many years ago, along with other buildings, and is now a car park.
A search on Ancestry shows that Victoria made a border crossing from Canada to the US in 1918, port of arrival St Albans, Vermont, US.  I can't give a specific date as I don't have a worldwide subscription to Ancestry.  Again on Ancestry, I found Victoria with husband Thomas and children John and Ellen arriving in Liverpool, England on 5 December 1922, having sailed on Cunard's ship Ausonia.
As I said in my previous post, Victoria's mother died 30 October 1901, when my partner's father, John was not even a year old.  I understand that the father died when John was very young but I still haven't found his death registration.  I can't find Victoria in 1911 census.

Thank you so very much for your reply. I am Victoria the daughter of John Edward Noakes who was Victoria Diamond Jubilee"s son. Ellen and John were twins and born in Montreal Canada. Victoria and her husband Thomas met in Toronto, Canada. My father died in 2001 at 78years old. All his siblings have passed. As I said we didn't know much of my grandmother and only in later years found out she was a Bernardo child. I imagine the trip to Liverpool was a trip home for them but they did reside in Toronto and then Windsor Ontario. I have no idea what the entry into the US would have been. All the descendants of Victoria now live in either Toronto or Michigan. I live in Plymouth Michigan which was also where my Father lived. I imagine they are not in the 1911 census because they were sent to Canada. I was told by my Uncle that Victoria's father could not care for the children after his wife's death so he gave them up to the orphanage. So I guess that your partner is my Uncle. This is so amazing to finally find out some of this information about our heritage. I want to be able to pass this onto my children.

thank you so much for your input. My cousin found this list today on Ancestory.com and it would seem that Victoria came by herself and no siblings were with her. It anyone has any info on the other siblings and where they ended up we would appreciate it. We all were in Canada but I wonder where the rest of her family went.
Title: Re: Grandad gone Missing?

Hello again
My name is Nina and I can tell you about three siblings of Victoria, your grandmother.

Agnes Harriet Bough, born 9 May 1886, married Harry Arthur SCOTTER on 4 Dec 1907, in Southwark, Surrey.  Agnes had dropped the name Harriet, her father was named as Edward Bough, deceased, a licenced victualler.  I haven't followed this line down - yet!

Edward Samuel Bough, born in 1888 was a soldier.  I don't know who he married but, he stayed in the army and lived in Aldershot, Hampshire.  My partner remembers him and his daughter, Queenie Agnes Bough, born 1911.  Queenie married Jonathan Ernest BANCALARI on 26 Dec 1931 at the military church in Aldershot - the Garrison church.  According to FreeBMD, a  dau Bancalari was born in 1936, birth registered in Aldershot district in June quarter of that year.  Both my partner and his sister remember someone they called "Bubbles" and I think this is probably that person.

John Bough, born 11 Dec 1900, married for the second time to Gladys Hyldred SMART on 7 Aug 1936.  My partner and his sister are the only children of that marriage.

My partner and his sister were both surprised when I said their father was one of seven children,  they knew only of the two I've mentioned above.  We knew nothing about some of the children being sent to Barnardo homes, I just wondered why I couldn't find any of the four in the 1911 census.

Title: Re: Grandad gone Missing?
Post by: missmuffet on Monday 14 March 11 20:53 GMT (UK)
Sorry, I gave wrong information about Agnes Bough.  She didn't marry in 1907 - I've just realised that I have her listed in 1911 as still single!  She was a housemaid in Russell Square, London.  It's definitely her, it states birthplace as Maidenhead, Berkshire.

I'll just delete that marriage from my programme.

Look forward to hearing from you again.

Nina

Hi
Mother Harriet died in 1901, cannot find father Edward anywhere (including death indexes).

In 1911, I can find the following children:
Agnes as a housemaid in London
Edward in the army in Aldershot
Youngest son John in an industrial school in Mayfield, near Woking in Surrey.

Victoria had emigrated to Canada in 1908 - you have found this in the last day or so.
Since my posts earlier tonight, I have found that both George and John emigrated to Canada together in 1906, on the ship Dominion, leaving Liverpool 2 August 1906.

That leaves just Thomas unaccounted for in 1911, he would have been aged 21 then.

So many unanswered questions. I am going to try and locate details of where my grandmother was sent in Canada through the Barnardo organization. I wonder if when they went to England in 1922 where they visited and if they made contact with Victorias family. I understand that my father John and twin sister Ellen were born while passing through Montreal and then it looks like within 2 months they sailed to Liverpool. I have not been able to locate the ships list of that journey. I am just starting on this quest so I have a lot to learn as to how to get to the information. I so appreciate all your help. I did understand that the reason the family was split up was because of the loss of their mother and the fathers inability to care for all the children with poverty being an issue. It is sad to think that some of the siblings didn't know how many there were. It would also seem that a lot of the relatives are possibly still in England and also maybe Australia. I would like to find out what happened to the other 2 that went to Canada. Thanks again. Victoria
