Title: Can anyone help with Idlicote parish regs?
Post by: scrappyshaz on Saturday 31 March 07 11:44 BST (UK)
Hi,
I'm desperately trying to find the birth/christening records for g/g/g/father Robert PURSER born 1818 in Idlicote. There was a Samuel & Elizabeth Purser having children in Idlicote around that time - but have been unable to find Robert's record. Does anyone have access to Idlicotes records & could look up for me please?
Thanks
Shaz :-\

If you look at the following site you will find those names on the M.I.s. Unfortunately there is no Parish Clerk listed for that Parish.

Both families appear in Idlicote census as well - but I need some proof of Robert's parentage. There was a Robert Purser born c 1818 at Blockley to Robert & Rebecca Purser & I believe this is not my Robert, but would like something to prove it one way or another. There is no record on IGI - any ideas on where else a christening record might be held?

Possibly Warwick County Records Office would do a search for you but you may have to pay a small fee.
Try them and see

I see he married Harriett Emms (b Moreton Morrell 1919 approx) in Shipston on Stour  district in December 1841. If you send for a certificate it will have his father's name on it.
Presumably you have the 1881 details for Robert and Harriett.
1841 Samuel 67 Ag Lab and Elizabeth 65 were living in Idlicote but no Robert in the village at that date. I would say they would be Robert's parents.

Hi Al,
Thanks for that tip. Do you know where would be the best place to order the marriage certificate from? I have to do it from Australia - so it can be expensive to convert our dollars to pounds. Any advice gratefully received.
Thanks
Shaz:)

If I were you I would start by Emailing Shipston On Stour Library which you should find by putting it in your search engine. They have copies of the Idlicote registers.Explain exactly that you want the fathers name and give them all details of the wedding date etc. I have found that many libraries will do a one-off search for you if you supply them with all details, sometimes they will charge a very small amount if they send a photocopy.
If that fails then i would look for Warwick Record Library and contact them.

Hi Al,
Thanks for that - checked out Shipston on Stour Library - but no email adddress, only phone & fax no's. Have emailed Warwick record office. I believe Robert & Harriet married in Ilmington - that is where they both were in the 1841 census & their first son George was born there. They were in Idlicote by 1844, by the children's births.

Hi

There is a problem with Shipston on Stour civil district - it covers more than one county, therefore they could have actually married in any of the parishes within three counties. So you would need to search about roughly 20 parishes for the marriage.

If you have the page and volume number for the marriage then it would be far cheaper to order the marriage certificate from the general register office than to pay for three different record offices in three counties to search the records for the marriage.

You can order the marriage certificate from the gro online http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/

It may cost you more for postage to australia but record office will charge you around £20 per hour for searching all the parishes in there records that are within Shipston civil registration district, to then possibly have to pay this amount three times is going to add up to a rather greater sum of money.

If you go to this link on the warwick ro page http://www.warwickshire.gov.uk/Web/corporate/pages.nsf/Links/8DFFB66821BBDEBD80256A9A004DC89A

click on the pdf file that shows poor law districs ( the second one down) you will see in the south of the county Shipston district - it stretches into Worcestershire and Gloucestershire (shipston was in Worcestershire until the 1920's) you will see there are several parishes within the thick black line; your couple could have marrid in any of these parishes.

Hope all this makes sense

That is precisely why I advised Shaz to get in touch with the library at Shipston as I have always found such staff very obliging .....and cheap!. She couldn't find an Email address but I am sure if she writes to them they will help her out, also she feels sure tthe marriage took place at Ilmington so best to start there instead of trawling through some twenty parishes.

I realise this is a very old post however I've just joined and might be able to help. My line goes back through Robert born 1818 and I have his parents as Samuel (brn 1775) and Elizabeth (brn 1777), does this match what the records office told you? I have three siblings for Robert too Mary Ann (1813) Henry (1809) and Betty (1806).

Hi Ratinexile,
Welcome to Rootschat  ;)
Yes my line is Robert b 1818 - the christening records are too faint to read the date but he is definitely the son of Samuel & Elizabeth Purser. I am descended from Robert & Harriet's daughter Emma born 1847. Will be happy to share info.
Regards
Shaz
