Hi
could someone who is going to the Bedfordshire archives or who has a text or microfiche copy of the Arlesey Parish records look up the following?
I've already looked this up on the Hugh Wallis IGI site and now need to double check it from the primary source but it's impossible for me to get to the archive and I can't afford to buy a text copy of the parish records.I don't have have a microfiche reader. So any help is welcome.
Baptism of John THOMPSON/TOMPSON-c1730-1740-possibly the son of William Thompson and Sarah Bye(although I'm not sure about this)
Marriage of William THOMPSON and Sarah BYE
Baptism of William THOMPSON-c 1720
Baptism for Sarah BYE-c 1720
N.B-only do William Thompson and Sarah Bye if they are John Thompson's parents. If other persons are given can you look for those names under those dates please.

Hi Trisha
I can't quite follow what you need double checking, or are you double checking a negative - John Thompson's baptism isn't on the IGI and you need confirmation from the PR that he wasn't erroneously missed off the IGI?
In any event, the marriage of William Tompson and Sarah Bye is on the IGI (extracted entry so reliable) on 16 Nov 1762 at Arlesey, so what makes you think they might have been the parents of a John christened 1730-40? The transcript confirms the marriage with the additional information that they were widower and widow and both of Arlesey.
There's no baptism on the IGI of a John in Arlesey, 1730-40, and not unexpectedly nor is there one in the transcript (there were no T(h)ompson baptisms at all in Arlesey 1729-44 inc). I suppose William and his first wife could have been John's parents, dependent on their ages, but it wasn't in Arlesey (unlikely as it seems as though William's first marriage may have been to Elizabeth Mariot in 1753).
I can go through burials etc to try to piece them together, but what evidence do you have that John was from Arlesey? What else do you know about him?

David

Have you seen the thread on the Bedford mailing list?

Perhaps you are part of it under an alias! (edit - you are!!!)

I was wondering if somebody could check the parish records for a christening of an Avis or Avice Inskip and also a John Mobbs. Avis was born about 1886 and John around the same year. Both from Kempston in Bedfordshire.
thanks

These records have not been transcribed so involve someone going to the Archives in Bedford. You're probably better off looking for births in the GRO indexes which can be found on www.ancestry.co.uk or the indexes which go up to around 1910 on http://www.freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl but which are not yet complete.
But I cannot see either of them on FreeBMD nor can I see an Avi* Inskip* anywhere in England in either the 1891 or 1901 censuses or a John Mobbs born in Beds in 1891/1901. There were no Inskips in Kempston in 1881 but there were plenty of Mobbs.
What other information do you have about them?

That should have read 1786, I should check my posts especially when I do them late at night.

Hi Peter

Kempston PRs have been extracted onto the IGI (www.familysearch.org - which is playing up something chronic at the moment) so if they're not there the chances are that they were from another parish or weren't baptised for whatever reason, usually non-conformity. I see they were married in Kempston in 1808. Have you checked the parish register to see if a parish of residence other than Kempston was quoted for either/both of them? If not try a new look up request, as these records have been transcribed and are much more accessible.
On the IGI there's a baptism of Avice Inskip in Bromham on 12 April 1789, daughter of John and Mary. Bromham adjoins Kempston. There's a burial of Avice Mobbs age 57 in Kempston on 19 March 1846. So the age fits perfectly.
There's a burial of John Mobbs age 53 in Kempston on 7 May 1838. The IGI has a baptism of John Mobbs at Kempston on 3 Jan 1786, birth 8 Dec 1785, son of John and Jane Mobbs
If you're a believer in naming patterns two of their daughters were named Jane and Mary and they had a son John (but every family had a son named John!)

Hello Peter;
Regarding naming patterns; on 1841 census Avis Mobbs had a 13 year old son named John; the John & Mary Inskip of Bromham also had son John baptised 11 Sept 1791. On 1841 & 1851 census John Inskip was living on Bromham Green with his son John age 19.
Which leads to this summarised extract from the Bromham History book...
In 1854 John Inskip held the post (of Pinner) and in April of that year was observed by John Perkins & Thomas White to be leading two donkeys, that they recognised, to the pound. So to avoid the penalty of having their animals released, they attacked John Inskip & found themselves before Bedford magistrates.
There was a 'cattle pound' on Bromham Green where villagers were obliged to place stray animals, & if not claimed the villager can have the beast. In charge of the pound was a parish officer known as the Pinner.
Now that's more interesting than just collecting names & dates.
Regards John (whose father wasn't John, neither was his grandfather)

Thanks David & John
John re naming patterns, My father's name was Mervyn but for some reason was called Pete, so I suppose I have a conflict there, all I'm thankful for is not being called Mervyn.
