Hi Guys.
Please be gentle with me as this is my first post. I recently started putting together my family tree and have come across a few anomolies so far but haven't been able to find an answer for what i'm about to ask.
When checking the marriage index i've found 2 surnames listed for the spouse. What does this mean?
I've then found the partner listed seperatly under both surnames in the marriage index and all three having the same volume and page number on the index
Example.......
A. Hill wed A. Jones or Smith 1947
Would this indicate an adoption or a possible divorce? and what is the best way to try to resolve it?
Thanks in advance.

Hi and welcome!
We do try to be gentle here on Rootschat, I hope.
I guess there could be all number of reasons why someone uses two names.
And I guess the only way to find out more is firstly to send for the marriage cert. Then maybe by investigating the person further the situaton may get clearer. At least they are not covering it up - that is when it gets hard, when someone married in a different name to that they were born with!
All the best with your searching - and dont be shy about askingf questions on rootschat

If it's the bride who has two different names that is most likely because she has been married previously. In 1947 she may have been divorced - but perhaps more probably widowed.
-
Thanks for the replies.
It is the bride showing 2 different surnames.
Would it be usual if it's a second marriage for both the 1st married surname and the maiden name to show up on the index for the bride?
If so it might make some sense.
The details i'm trying to check are as follows:
1938 a Len Eddy wed an Ivy Bedford
1947 Ivy Eddy or Bedford married a Duffield ( this is where i have a male entry and 2 entries for Ivy, one under the surname Eddy and the other under Bedford all showing the same volume and page numbers )
.....
Then i've just found another marriage entry for a Len Eddy in 1948 to a Dunn
All the marriages have taken place in the same registration district.

Well.... if they both remarried then they must have been divorced rather than widowed!
I would not say it is the norm for the bride to be enterred under two names, normally it wolud just be the name she is known as - usually her married name.
But only way to be sure is to get certificates - see if on second marriage it says 'previous marriage dissolved'

Thats the part i'm trying to work out at the moment. Whether Ivy was a sister of Len, or she married him and then they divorced.
I'm currently trawling the Birth index to try to find a birth entry for Ivy.

When I first read this I wondered if she married Len and he went missing in WW2- then she married Mr Duffield..............but Len turned up safe and well and he too remarried.
Or of course they could have split up/divorced and married other partners.
Or the second marriage could be his cousin or someone entirely different !!!
Have you checked to see if a Len Eddy died between 1938 and 47?
Regards

An Ivy Duffield died in Doncaster in April 1993 with a dob of 15 Dec 1915
A Leonard Eddy died in Doncaster in Sept 1985 with a DOB of 16 Aug 1916 and a mothers maiden name of Ord if that helps?

Hi Carol,
Thanks for the info. I've checked the birth index for Ivy eddy and theres no entry there, so it looks as though that was her married name and it's 2 mariages.
Just checking the same year now under the bedford name.
-
It gets more bizarre.
Now i've checked the birth entries for Ivy under both the Eddy and Bedford surnames and have drawn blanks on both for the 1915 birth date.
I think i might have to leave this one on one side for a bit and concentrate on other people who i can find information for relatively easily.
-
With her having a DOB of 15th Dec,have you tried the March 1/4 of 1916?
It WAS nearly Xmas after all and with all the other stuff going on perhaps they didn't get round to registering her birth till after Xmas. They did have up to 6 weeks to do so of course.
Just a thought........... ;)

Hi Carol.
I have found an entry for the beford name in the 1st quarter of 1916, but it's in a different registration district.
2 bedfords married family members, both in the doncaster district, so although i've got this birth entry as a possibility, i'm not going to commit to it until i get further information.
Thanks again for your help.
