Post by: jackhammer on Wednesday 28 March 07 00:27 BST (UK)
Hi

I am trying to find information about Ernest Hamilton Mitchell who married Gertrude May Siegmann (Port Pirie,1925).  He may have had a brother John Rankine Mitchell who married Lois Siegmann in Port Pirie 1915.

Regard Jackhammer

Thank you all for your help and for the information.

Ernest Hamilton Mitchell is the one I am trying to trace along with his father William Melville and it is unfortunate that there seems to be no records on their origin,

Thanks again
Kind regards jackhammer.

William Melville Mitchell was my great grandfather, he died in Port Pirie, South Australia in 1914 as stated. Ernest Hamilton was his son as was Cyril Harcourt, Roy, John Turner, Sidney, Albert, Harry and Charles all from a first marriage and then my own grandfather Stanley Harold Victor Mitchell of Williams second marriage to Margaret Mary Smith. My grandfather was only three years old when William was run over by a horse and dray. I was only familiar with Cyril (never married), John(Jack) never married, Charles married Mona Horne, Ernest married Gertrude Siegmann, Roy married Cicily Smith, the other brothers Albert married Olga Grocke, Harry married Mavis Mckenzie, Sidney never married. My grandfather married Stella Florence Sandery Hope this helps  Cheers Myka

Hi Jackhammer

This MITCHELL family was in NSW mostly at Wentworth.  Parents named William and Anna.

Thanks very much Rhonda, well spotted. I will investigate the Wentworth district on the NSW records. A William registered Bathurst 1856 could be of interest too. Age would be right.

Hi Myka,
Just realised your Roy Mitchell m. Cecily SMITH is part of my family tree.
Cecily/Cicely was a sister to my GGrandmother Mary (May) Lovell SMITH.
I sent you a private message but you have to post 2 more messages for your private email to work.

Hope to hear from you,
Sashar

So pleased i could be of help to some in regards to William Mitchell, also Cicely Smith who has family still here in Port Pirie. I note you mention NSW links for William Melville Mitchell, my Aunty Collene says the family was originally from New South and she believes that William may have trained horses.

I have in my notes that Robert Roy MITCHELL was born 1900 at Wyndham nr Pooncairie NSW, father was William.

That's all I had which is why I didn't wake up for a while about the connection until I saw Cicely SMITH's name in your post.

The name Cicely/Cecily was handed down through the SMITH family which is why it caught my attention.

Will have to see if TROVE newspapers brings up anything to do with horses.

Regards,
Sashar

Hi  Sashar, correction in regards to Cicely Smith. Pat was the daughter of Mary Smith your great grandmother, not Cicely. Pat lives here as does her daughter. Sorry for incorrect info. Cheers Myka

Hello, I have just read about William Melville Mitchell and his children, his first marriage was at Horsham Victoria on the 3rd of October 1883 when he married Elizabeth Thorne they had one son William George Thomas, in 1884. Elizabeth died several days after giving birth. William Melville :) was the son of William and Martha nee Turner they ran the Western Hotel in Dunkeld Victoria Australia where young William was born. William had 3 sisters two who died as children and are buried with their parents in the old Dunkeld Cemetery. Martha was married to Thomas Clark and had seven children with him before she had 4 children with William Mitchell. I have the marriage cert of William Melvilles 1st and 3rd marriages. Does anyone have a copy of the 2nd marriage to Johanna Marie (I think may be her name, known as Anna) or any record of it?.
William Snr came from Portsmouth in England, he is the son of William Mitchell and it is possible that his mother was Sarah nee Miller and she was a retired shopkeeper in Portsmouth in 1851. Hope this helps you all a little. Regards H M
