Title: Ledsam of Edgbaston 1841 -91 COMPLETED THANKS
Post by: Kayzee on Monday 26 March 07 22:21 BST (UK)
Can anyone help me find this Ledsam family in any of the above census. In 1891 they are at 214, Hagley Road.

Ann m Ledsam  wid  57  lvg own means   bn  B'ham
Henry F C S  Ledsam son 26  act clerk law  bn Edgbaston
Charlotte E A Ledsam dau 28                             "
Alice M S  Ledsam        dau 25                               "
Wm. F J  Ledsam         son  22 clerk                     "
Ed. Alf. G S  Ledsam   son  21  undergrad. Oxon   "
Eleanor LC C Ledsam  neice 23 lvng owmn means   "

With all the children born in Edgbaston they seem to have a fairly stable location & mum & 3 children are still there in 1901, but I have drawn a blank in 1881 & earlier. I suppose the children may have been away at school in 1881 but where is Ann?
Would be pleased to find them on just one census. Can anyone help please?

Name spelt clearly - doesn't help with parents, though

Hi Tricia,
I don't know what to say!! Can I send you my tree? I'm sure you'd have it all finished by the end of the week!! A previous marriage too! But he certainly favoured Hagley Road, just couldn't decide which house he liked best!! Wouldn't mind 6 servants myself. Thank you doesn't seem enough but THANK YOU you're a star.
Oh my word now you've posted an entry from 1851. Well it's a possibility but he doesn't sound like the sort of man that got his hands dirty to me. I shall attempt to look at FreeBMD for the death of a Ledsam wife but I'll have to leave it until tomorrow as some of us need sleep to miss these entries!!
Whoops there you go again yes, the 1841 census entry must be him & I expect you'll have his parents for me before I can sign off, what is your secret? Do you have sat.nav for census entries?
     You certainly are an expert,
      Thanks again
          Kay

This is really sad - went to bed thinking of your Joseph and realised that Mil on the 1871 is really Nil as in 'no occupation' ;D ;D

Funny you should say that about his parents - his birth is on the IGI on Family Search and it is an extracted record from the Parish records so should be accurate

Hi Tricia,
You have done more than enough thank you. One of my Allsops married Henry Ledsam & I realised that they were quite a 'well to do' family (anyone with 4 christian names is well to do in my book!) & was curious as to how they had  made their fortune (am still trying to make mine!). I can access the census on ancestry at the library now that you have given me the details but I was looking for Ann rather than Anna when I looked. The trouble is there's a 2 hour time limit & with lots of people to look up I tend to give up & look for someone else if I don't get anywhere quickly as there are not many oppurtunities to visit in opening hours. If I had access at home I could afford to be more patient!
Sorry the Ledsams kept you awake last night! You weren't the only one,I was really tired but couldn't sleep because I felt I'd been a little rude skulking off to bed when you were so busy looking for answers to my query!! It was difficult to knucle down to work today also & then when I finally got online again tonight I find you've got me back another generation!! Wow!
Thanks so much for everything, I'm a little embarrassed you found it all so quickly, it's a bit like on 'who wants to be a millionaire' when they ask the audience and 99% know the answer! But I'm so grateful, you've saved me so much time. You're a star!
   Good luck with your searches,
          Kay

Hi Tricia,
I hate to bother you so soon again but I have another little problem(actually I have a lot of little problems, but I shan't write a book!). I wondered if you could find John Alsop/Allsop born 1829 in Dublin in the 1901 census. He had spent all his life in Birmingham & is found lodging at 171, Bristol Road, Edgbaston in 1891 when he was listed as an artist. He was at 81 Bristol Road with his mother & sister in 1881 but they'd died by 1891 so he is likely to be a lodger or boarder I suppose.
I think he died Mch qtr 1909 in Birmingham but if this is not my man (I don't have the certificate) I suppose he might have died pre census. Equally I know he had painted scenes of the Isle of Arran so he may have been away on census night, but if you were able to cast your expert eye over the Bristol Road area & say he's not there, I shall be happy to move on.
Feel free to say no & I shall place a 'new topic' request & please don't lose any sleep over it!

Hi Kay

Dont know if you are still researching the Ledsam Family but I just thought you might like to know that Emily Agnes Ledsam was my great great grandmother. She married a Henry Sheppard and eventually settled in Ireland on the Tipperary/Offaly border. How are you connected to this family?

Hi,
I am always interested in more research, it is finding the time that is the problem! Henry Thomas Clutton Salt Ledsam married Lucy Sophia Alsop. Her great grandfather's brother was my husband's 3x Gt Gd father. It's quite a distant link, but I have had a lot of fun tracing them.
Are you interested in tracing the Ledsams? I think I did get some information on them when I visited Birmingham archives. I can send you detail of what I have on them if you wish. Let me know.

Hi there all Ledsam relatives,
I am researching the Ledsam family tree, my grandfather was James Goddington Ledsam, his parents were George Moreton and Anne nee Lamrock, George Moreton's parents were Joseph Ledsam and Frances "Fanny" Barbara nee Jackson, Joseph Ledsam married twice and his second wife was Anna Clara (Anna Maria) Salt.
The Ledsam family were a very rich family and owned lots of property in Birmingham, they are also owned Weoley Castle

Hi Janene,
Good to hear from a second Ledsam family member. Also good to see where the Salt name came from. I don't have a huge amount of information, but am willing to share anything I have. There are many documents relating to the Ledsam family in Birmingham Archives, including I think a pamplett about the ownership of Weoley Castle. I see you are in Oz, I would be interested to hear which generation travelled out.

Hi again,
George Moreton was the second son of Joseph Ledsam (he had an older brother Joseph who died when he was 15) and his mother Frances Jackson died when George was 3, so Joseph Moreton married again to Anna Clara (Anna Maria) Salt and then they had 4 more children.  Apparently when George got older he didn't get along with his stepmother and there was some sort of fight and George went to Sydney, Australia where he met Ann Lamrock a divorced mother of one girl, they married and had 5 children and one of them was my grandfather James Goddington Ledsam, he married Mary Mabel Payne and they had 8 children one of which is my mother Gwendoline June, I hope that all makes sense.
Whereabouts are you from?
I went to England in 2010 and had a tour of the Weoley Castle Ruins, it was wonderful.
Regards Janene

How interesting. When you mentioned James Goddington previously, I thought you meant the one born 1836, but from your last reply I can see that you are talking about a nephew of the same name. I shall send you a personal message later with my e-mail address so that we can discuss things further. I can already tell you that Joseph & Ann Maria Salt had a further 5 children that I know of & I might be able to put you in contact with a couple of their descendants.
I am in Wales, I spent a day researching in Birmingham, but my interest was really the Alsops who married into the Ledsams, so I didn't do the Ledsams justice when I was there When I retire, I hope to spend at least a week there, but at 51, I have a way to go!!, I can take you back to Thomas born 1740, but being an educated man, George Moreton possibly documented that for his descendants.

Hi Kay,  Long time since we have spoken.  I hope you are well.  Still looking at bits and pieces to do with the Ledsam family.  My cousin's wife actually did a whole book on the family, so probably know it all by now.  I probably won't make it back to England again due to ill health but I so pleased I got to go and see Weoley Castle.  I wish I could be a fly on the wall to see all that happened in their family and I wonder if there are any relatives around.  I did a DNA test with ancestry but haven't had many matches from England. I have had a match with someone in America and sent a message last year but he hasn't replied.  Looking forward to see if you have done any more research.  Thanks Janene
