Title: When did he arrive in NSW?
Post by: fek33 on Saturday 24 March 07 20:52 GMT (UK)
Hi, I wonder if anyone can give me any advice please?

I have looked through various posts and tried different sites to find out when Alfred Merrall (born Leicester, England - 1884, Jan quarter, Leicester 7a 202) arrived in Australia, but have found nothing.

On his death transcript (he died on 20 Oct 1943) it says time in Aust Colonies, 18 years in NSW (which would have meant he arrived in 1925), but I believe he married Daisy Gouge in 1916 (I am ordering a transcription to confirm and they had a daughter who was born and died in 1917).

Can someone tell me my next move please?

Thank you. FEK33

PS I have mentioned this in a previous posting but didn't think it was relevant to the title, so have opened this new thread - hope I've done the right thing!!)  ???

Sue, thank you very much for this information, which I hadn't got.

I have a lot of loose ends with Daisy and children and am going to order transcriptions to confirm things.

Thanks once again.  Regards FEK33  ;D

Sue,

Thanks to the information you have given me on this posting, a member of staff at Eastern Suburbs Mem Park, NSW has sent me photographs of Daisy's, Ethel's and Gordan Merralls stones in the Memorial Gardens.

Thank you  :D

Would it be possible for you to give me some advice on how to find out when Alfred Merrall arrived in NSW please?

What is confusing, as I mentioned previously, is that on his death transcript, it says time in Aust Colonies, 18 years in NSW (which would have meant he arrived in 1925), but I believe he married Daisy Gouge in 1916 (I am ordering a transcription to confirm the marriage and they had a daughter who was born and died in 1917).

Alfred died on 20 Oct 1943 (I have all the details on where he is buried, etc).

Thank you.

Hi,
There is no sure-fire way to establish when he came.
I'm sure you have looked at the available online sources for NSW and other states.
Vic. index shows a couple of Merralls coming in.  One Alfred and one Mr. A , but ages do not agree with your man's.
The information on the death cert. re 18 years is, I think, dubious but should not be totally ignored.

There are chatters in this Aust. forum who are better informed than me about immigration records, but I do know that there is a bit of 'black hole ' in records between 1900 and 1923??

Just to confirm his suspected pre- 1916 arrival.........

I would try to establish his last known whereabouts in Uk

Does he have a ww1 service history there?  Census 1901?

What was his line of work on his death cert.?

We do have lots of great avenues of research here, but immigration online is a bit patchy, sad to say.

Sue

Found this which is of interest in light of Tropicaljen's reply #13 in your Cowra thread

Enlistee for ww2
Alexander Hector Doig, born 26/10/1900 at Cowra.
Next of Kin Daisy Merall [note spelling]
He joined up in 1940 at Paddington.

Additionally,
Also listed on above,
Doig, Reginald.  Born 1908 at Dobbo [sic].  Enlisted Paddington for ww2 in 1941.
Next of kin Daisy Doig

BDM NSW shows he died  1976. Father Reginald. Mother Daisey [sic]

The possible death listing for Alexander Hector is odd.

Shows father Alexander Hector --very similar to Alexander Harry,which are the given names of Daisy's father -Gouge
Shows mother Jane Elizabeth ---which are the given names of Daisy's mother- Gouge
Daisy married another Gouge ---Raymond--- in 1908. [per Jenn and bdm nsw] He was son of Sydney and Mary A.
Daisy called herself Daisy Doig at that time
He died 1909. .[do. Jenn]

It is a great tangle!

Hi, Sue,

Yes I have looked at all the available resources on line.  I did notice the Merralls on the Vic index, but like you say ages do not agree with my Alfred.

I actually emailed the National Archives of Australia yesterday to see if they have any information.

I haven't been able to find any WW1 service history details, and he appears on the Leicester, England 1901 Census aged 14, Engineer's Pattern Maker, born Leicester.

His occupation on his death transcription is a Pattern Maker.

Would the marriage certificate say how long he had been resident in Australia?

Have just read your new posting while I was typing a reply - thank you.  Yes what a tangle - you can see why I'm very confused!!  It doesn't help being on the other side of the world does it?  lol!!!

Hi Sue,

Cor what a headache I have got!!

From your previous post, I think, that Alexander Hector Doig (born 1900 ref 30977), father Alexander L & mother Jane E, Cowra is Daisy's brother.

I am still not sure about Reginald Doig,  Arrrgghh!

Have this morning ordered the marriage transcript for Daisy Gouge & Alfred Merrall.

I have also sat and put all the information together which I have for Alfred Merrall & Daisy Gouge.  This is the info.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Daisy Doig, born abt 1889 (Ref 30042/1889 Doig Daisy, Father Alexander, Mother Jane E, Newcastle).
Died 20/8/1966, aged 77 (ref 4531/1966 Merrall, Daisy May father Alexander Harry, mother Jane Elizabeth, Sydney).  Cremated and interred at Eastern Suberbs Mem Park, NSW, Memorial Gardens F22.
Married Raymond G Gouge, 1908 (ref 4572/1908),
Raymond G Gouge died in 1909 (ref 13101/1909, father Sydney, mother Mary A, Cowra)
Gordon Alexander Gouge, born 1908 (ref 13621/1908), Cowra, father Raymond W Gouge, mother Daisy.
Died 15 November 1973, aged 65 years (ref 6856/1973 - Gouge-Merrall Gordon Alexander, father Raymond Gordon, mother Daisy, Sydney.  Cremated and interred at Eastern Suberbs Mem Park, NSW, Memorial Gardens F22.
(NB on the memorial says Gordon Alexander Merrall)
Believe he married Ethel Elizabeth Newton? (she died 25/4/1963, aged 47 and is interred at Eastern Suberbs Mem Park, NSW, Memorial Gardens F22, next to Gordon Alexander Merrall).
Sidney A Gouge, born 1909, (ref 13753/1909 father Raymond W, mother Daisy).
Also listed Jean Gouge, born 1913 (ref 50819/1913), Bathurst
Father nil, mother Daisy
(NB don’t know if she is connected)
Alfred Merrall married Daisy Gouge, Paddington, Sydney 1916 (ref 11565/1916)
Transcription ordered 30/3/2007.
Nancy M Merrall, born 1917 (ref 46336/1917), Waverley, Sydney
Father Alfred Merrall, mother Daisy Gouge
Died 1917 (ref 15975/1917), Merrill (sic), Nancy M, father Alfred, mother Daisy, Waverley.  Buried in Waverley Cemetery aged 8 days, interred in a common grave 5 Dec 1917.
Alfred Merrall died 1943 (ref 27252/1943)
Father John Thomas Merrill & Emma, Granville, Sydney
(died on 20 October 1943 - death transcript confirms and is buried in Rookwood Cemetery - no gravestone).
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

What is confusing me slightly (doesn't take much!!), is Gordon Alexander Gouge-Merrall.  On his birth ref he is listed as Gordon A Gouge, but on his death ref he is listed as Gordon Alexander Gouge-Merrall, and on his memorial as Gordon Alexander Merrall.   ???

Is it possible that Alfred Merrall adopted him, as his real father, Raymond died when he was only 1?  If so, how would I go about finding this information out please?

I also haven't been able to find a death ref for Sidney A Merrall (or Gouge-Merrall).

Thank you.

Ozybob has given me some very helfpful info, but wonder if anyone can give me some advice about Gordon Alexander Merrall (Gouge-Merrall)?

Ozybob has since found Gordon's brother's (Sydney) death, 2707/1910, Gouge, Sydney A, father Raymond G, mother Daisy, Paddington.  So Sydney died young, but appears to have only the surname of Gouge.

So does anyone think Gordon would have been formally adopted at the Merrall marriage or did he just casually take on the name???

Ask are there ways to find out.??

I look forward to some advice!!!!

Hi, I have today received the NSW Marriage Registration Transcription for Alfred Merrall and Daisy Gouge (Doig).

It has confirmed that it IS my Alfred Merrall and am really pleased.

It confirms that they married in 1916 and his residence was 71 Hargrave Street, Paddington, Sydney, NSW.  They married at St Matthias Church, Paddington.

That has enabled me to narrow it down to arriving in Australia between 1901 and 1916.

Now I have my confirmation, is anybody able to tell me how I find out if Alfred did in fact adopt Gordon A Gouge?

Thank you FEK33  :-\

Hello Fek

It is nice when certificates prove what think is the story - so much nicer than spending money to find you are following the wrong path  ;D

My thought would be that he simply took on the name of his step-father, as he was very young when his father died - perhaps on the death certificate the family thought they should use both names, but decided they didn't need both for the burial.  By the time of his marriage, he definitely was using both names and the registry is unsure how to index him as there are 8 index records for the marriage. It is to Ethel in 1939 - as you thought - and the surname is probably GOUGE-MERRALL

Presumably the young Sydney died before his mother remarried, so his name would not have changed.

There should information online about when formal adoptions started in NSW but at the minute I can't find it.

Trish

Re the immigration - If he arrived into NSW there may be information at the State records, but I haven't seen any that late online as yet. You could look at their website for details of what immigration is available for that time period.

They do have an index to ships arriving 1837-1925, so there may be shipping lists for your time period - but the passengers may not be indexed.

Hi Trish,

Thanks for that (hope you have seen the PM's!!) - I have now been able to confirm that Gordon married Ethel Newton.   ;)

Yes, Sydney Gouge died when he was about 1.

Look forward to receiving info re formal adoptions.

Have looked at your link re ships arriving, but unfortunately passengers don't appear to be indexed.

Thanks once again.

Hi FEK

Try using google to find details re adoptions in NSW. There are lots of hits, so one of them may have the history of same. Alternatively if you email the registry they may be able to tell you when adoption officially began.

If the birth certificate is showing in the original name, I think it unlikely that there was a formal adoption.
