I expect this has been requested before, if so would someone direct me to it. If not, being a complete techno bozo, could someone please tell me, in the simplest of terms, how to scan a photo so that I can put it on here in the hope of help with identification.
I'm not just pleading dim :-\ I really do need help.
Many thanks

OK Tuscany a dim reply :)
Do you have a scanning machine?

Yes, very sad but I only use it to scan and print.

OK Tuscany,
Rightly or wrongly I'm going to assume you find your way around a computer, after all you managed to post the message above ;)
First you need a photo and a scanner, and it does not have to be a scanner connected to your machine. If you have a friend with a scanner that will do. If you own a scanner so much the better.
Place the photo on the scanner bed and scan it. Most software that comes with scanners these days will suggest different settings for whatever it is you want to scan such as text or black and photos, colour photos etc.
If you are given a choice choose a medium setting for a JPG file, the idea here is to have a size that wont take too long to upload but has a decent resolution that people can see a good image. The scanner software will suggest a location to put the scanned image into. Make a note of the location and write it down exactly as the one suggested on screen.
So now the image is on your hard drive, if its on your friends hard drive copy it to a cd or usb stick and transfer it to your hard drive.
You now want to place the photgraph onto this forum (or wherever)
Start a new topic and when you do you will see the normal box appear enabling you to write in your text.
At the bottom of the text box in blue type you will see the words "Attach a photograph or image (and other options).." click on this link and it will open up further boxes below it .
Click on the "browse" box to the right and then navigate to the location where you saved your scanned image earlier on. When you have clicked on the saved photo the link will appear in the previous box and "et voila" the image is now part of your post.
Press post and away you go.
Good Luck

Hi Tuscany,
You've received good advice already, but just to let you know there is a topic at the top of the Photo Restoration board called "Cazza's scanning tutorial".
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,198165.0.html
It's really good and should help you in no time!
Cheers

Thankyou so much.
John, I followed your instructions, it took me a while to decide which operation I neede for the scanner but I've managed it, the only thing is they are huge but at least I've done it.
Another new skill.
Very many thanks,
Tuscany

Hey excellent
It's all about using the software and trying different setting to scan at.
If you want if you tell me what scanner you have I will put together a bit of a "scanning for beginners " guide, but I'm sure that the more you use the scanner the more you will become confident and eventually expert.

Thanks for that John, it would be much appreciated.
I have an 'Epson Perfection 2580 Photo', That's the blurb on the front and it didn't come with any instructions as such, just a piece of paper that didn't really tell me anything.

Ok
I've had a look on the epson web site and found this.
http://support.epson-europe.com/onlineguides/en/perf2480/index.htm
this is the manual for the 2480 and 2580 scanner
also have a look here

See how you go with these and then let me know if you need any more help
Cheers

Hi John
Very many thanks, it's just a matter of knowing where to look.
I had a brief run through and it's exactly what I want, something that tells me how to do what with which. There is so much these things can do and each time I realise how little I know.
Very grateful
