Title: Any news on Familyrelatives.org/.com?
Post by: ShaunJ on Saturday 24 March 07 08:28 GMT (UK)
Familyrelatives.org has been offline since March 9. That web address is dead but if you go to familyrelatives.com you will get redirected to this message http://www.familyrelatives.info/message01/message01.htm announcing that the service is being upgraded and will relaunch as familyrelatives.com in about 10 to 12 days from March 9. So it's getting a bit overdue. Does anyone know any more about the relaunch date ?

I received around 20 identical emails from familyrelatives.com today, each one telling me that my subscription will expire in 2 weeks' time.

The service is still down and has been for the last month.

Does anyone know how to get in touch with the proprietor ( a Jersey company called Treequest) ? I've tried sending email but it just bounces back.

I just received '27' mails from them to tell me My subscription will expire in 2 weeks! ::)

I think their Auto-mailing System must be the Only thing that They have 'Up & Running'! ::) :o

The only addy I can find is:

TreequestLimited_26386[at]dotmailer.co.uk

But I think this was only there 'Mail Sender' addy (I don't think it will be any good trying to send a mail to them using this addy)?

Also, they have Changed their Mail Server Anyway! ???

P.S.

The addy that sent me the 27 mails is from a Different Server!

I received my 27 mails overnight telling me that my subscription is about to expire.

Well I'd really LOVE to use my un expired credits..........but they've still not got themselves up and running again!!!

Spose there's nothing we can do then?

Their update notice says that the expiry dates for Members’ units will be extended while the site is unavailable.

If you are keeping an eye on this, you might want to note that they say they will be changing from ".org" to ".com" when the new server is up and running.

Don't get too excited just yet, but there is another update this week saying that they are in final testing mode and they expect the data transition to be completed  "around Easter time" (yes I know Easter was a few weeks ago!).

There is an apology to those who suffered from the "technical malfunction" - presumably that refers to all those emails reminding us to use up our units.

Edit...Ahhh bit of a problem- they are telling my units have expired DOH- I wonder whose fault that is !

Yes it's back. I was locked out after one attempt to log in and had to go through the "forgotten password" routine but that worked fine. I'm now logged on and I have 10 days to use up my remaining units (which is what I had in mid- March when the site was taken down, so that's fair). Now what was it that I wanted to look up ....?

I've just tried, it didn't recognise my existing password, so I requested a new one, I can log in ok now but my units have gone! :'(

I had no problem logging in, but I have noticed that when I click some of the Links I have to Log In Again! ???

P.S.

I don't like the look of the New Format! (I suppose I will have to re-learn How to navigate around in there!) ::)

I have finally got back in. I had to email them to get my time extended-cos I couldn't use it whilst they were off line!!!

They've given me my units back and added extra time, they were due to expire on the 2nd May- they've now extended that to 11th Aug.

Now who was it I wanted to look for?  ::)

I received an email too and it made me laugh the bit about 'all the experts at Who Do You Think You Are Live' saying it was the best site for BMDs - that certainly wasn't what they were saying in either of the sessions I attended, so I wonder who these experts are!

I've just had an email from them too, though I haven't had any credits there for a long time.

You guys seem to be saying that it's probably not worthwhile joining.  Is that right?  Please let me know what you think.  It's good to know if it is going to be worthwhile before you part with any of your hard-earned!  8)

I did think it worthwhile before, very useful for the period 1865 ((or was it 66?) to 1920

Yes, between 1866 and 1920, individuals can be isolated, especially if you know the district. Saves hunting through numerous pages in other sites!

They sent me an e-mail saying that there will soon be a county option on the search page. I had queried the missing map facility, which I used a great deal, but they said was underused!

After e-mailing them, they reinstated my units.  This is a good site for 1911-1920 BMD's.  I usually buy a number of units but the £37.50 a year subscription looks tempting.

Thanks for that, folks!  I did look at the yearly sub and wonder.  Trouble is, I haven't got too many more people to find post 1837 (though a couple of really, really significant ones!) so am wondering to myself whether it would be worth it.

Hi,
I have just registered on familyrelatives to use one of the free indices, but It fails to display the image. The test image works and I have followed all the help ideas, and tried it on another machine.
Does anyone else have this problem - I have emailed them but had no reply.

Cheers,

Hi Dave

Glad I'm not the only one!

Just signed up and spent the last hour or so pulling my hair out trying to get an image, ANY image, to show, but still no joy.

I've changed every setting and even turned off my firewall and still nothing. So frustrating!

All I wanted was the free Overseas indexes, and I can't even get them

Grrrr..........

A very, very frustrated Glen  ??? >:( :-\ :'(

Hi,
I've got exactly the same problem.  Unable to view all images except test and get a status bar message of "Done, but with problems on page".
No reply from Familyrelatives.org

It would be nice to know if any of the users who are accessing the pay for images have tried the free ones.
I've still had no reply to my email so I guess they aren't interested.

When I tried the '.' using my Firefox browser, I was informed that I had not got the required deja vu viewer installed - yet I had because I use it for Ancestry page views.  Nevertheless, I downloaded and installed it again (from familyrelatives) and have had no problems loading images.

Wardonia is right i think, I too use Ancestry but had to download the deja vu viewer through the familyrelatives site.

Hi Wardonia and Nicky

Can I just clarify that the Overseas Records 1761-1981, rather than any of the pay pages, all work and display fine if the Deja Vu viewer is downloaded from Familyrelatives?

I just tried downloading it for a second time, but still no joy. I've now tried using the free Overseas indexes on my machine using Internet Explorer, Firefox and even Windows Safari with no results, on a Mac with Safari again no results and on another PC with Internet Explorer, again with nothing displaying on the Overseas Records pages.

Getting mildly frustrated, to say the least.

Glen

I selected the free Overseas Records 1761-1981 and loaded a random page.  Seems OK.

I just tried Firefox - just the same. Until I reloaded the viewer, it told me there was no plug in, so it must now be recognising the plugin.
Just been into the router to turn of its firewall and that made no difference. There was nothing in its log about anything being blocked.

It must be something silly, maybe a configuration somewhere

Just a thought, it doesn't look like a browser or a viewer problem - could it be the site that is rejecting the request.
Are we, perhaps, only allowed to view the free data if we have some credits anyway?

Thats exactly what I was just thinking Dave.

"Free" to them may mean that the images are not charged per view, but a subscription is needed to be able to see them.

Well, well, just as I suspected.

I just bought £5 of units and suddenly, magically, the images are popping up without a hint of a problem.

"Overseas records are FREE to browse and view" as they state should not mean that you have to buy something to view them.

Very, very angry Glen  >:( >:( >:(

***Problem now resolved. Units do NOT need to be purchased to view the free images*** (No longer quite so angry!!!)

I had a look at the familyrelatives.com About Us section. You'll need to go to the Information section and then the About Us section as when I inserted the link only a blank page appeared. It's a right load of waffle. The fact that they are located on an offshore island interested me. They're not like Emerald Ancestors who are located in Belfast ... at least we in the Belfast area can always drop in and talk to them or give them a phone call whereas I can only find an email and snail mail address for Family Relatives.

Hi Wardonia  :)

Without knowing the headings, I am not sure how to answer you.  But it is a death, it could have occurred in either Hong Kong or Formosa (as I think Taiwan was previously known), and it could have occurred between 1861 and 1885.

If you cannot search on those criteria, let me know what more you need in order to search effectively.

Thanks!

(Sigh!  :( )  Thank you very, very much for looking!  I really do appreciate it!

The wretched woman lived in the East End of London all her married life and most of her widowhood (goodness knows where at the end!)  I can't find a death or a remarriage for her, and as one and possibly two of her sons were in Hong Kong and Taiwan, I thought she might have gone out to live with one of them.  Obviously beamed up by Scotty!!  :'( :'( :'(

Anyway, thank you for at least eliminating that possibility.  Back to the drawing boards!

Although there do seem to have been initial problems, they look to have been resolved. I'll try again when I get home.
