I am researching the Ballard Ancestors believed to have lived in Maldon Kent (?Essex). First found was Joseph Ballard in 1779 (although I haven't been able to find details of his birth or his parents) his occupation was that of Basket Maker. He married Martha (?) and they lived in Middlesex with their children. Their youngest son Frederick born 1824 moved to North Shields, Northumberland, when he married Jane Morgan. Frederick was a Fisherman and a number of his sons were Fishermen or Mariners of some kind.
Any knowledge of this family would be greatly appreciated, or even hints of where I should look would be great.
Thanks alot and have a nice day.:-*

I have a great grandmother named Anne Ballard born in Teston, Kent England in 1791. I am in search of her family as well. I have reason to believe her mother is named Ann as well. I also have Geo Ballard as a witness of her marriage certificate. Mary Ann Ballard may be a niece. If any of this information ring a bell please let me know.

I have had some success since this last post. Martha was Martha Flight of Henley, Oxfordshire and she married Joseph at St. Bolotoph, Bishopsgate. I also got a copy of the Parish Register for Joseph and it gave his parents as William and Elizabeth who married in 1775, All Saints Church, Maidstone, Kent.
Another source of great information is from Paul Ballard's site - Paul Ballard Genealogy and Heraldry, select the heading Genealogy, then select Main Index and you will find many, many Ballards all listed under their christian name and date of birth.
Paul has been working on his site for 30 years so it is full of information.
I will also review my records and will advise you if I find anything to help you.

On Familysearch.org there is;
Father: George Ballard Mother: Ann - son George Ballard born 18th July, 1795 Teston, Kent, England.
Could these be part of your family?

Thank you so much for your help and fast reply. I have gone on the Ballard website and unfortunately do not have enough info to verify any one person. I did send an email to Paul Ballard in hopes something would stand out to him. The last info you sent is definitely a possibility, the question is how do I connect them to my Ann?
-
This is all the info I have on Ann please let me know if the George and Ann Ballard you have found seems to fit. Thank you so much for all your help!!!
My 4x Great Grandmother is Ann or Anne Ballard. I have not been able to identify her or her husbands parentage/family.
I know that she was married in St. George Hanover Square, Middlesex England on March 20 1815 to Richard Starkey (Oct 30, 1778). There is a Geo Ballard listed as a witness. I am assuming that is a George Ballard that is either her father or brother.
They had six children: Richard, James, Caroline, Mary Ann, Frederick, and Eliza.
I know from the 1841 census (attached) that they are on Vincent Street in the city of Westminster parish of St John the Evangelist. She has a 3 year old named Mary Ann Ballard on the census with the family. I am assuming a niece? Also a Ann Ballard who is 68 years old. I am assuming her mother? She is noted to be 50 years old here putting her year of birth at about 1791.
I know from the 1851 Census (attached) that she is head of house (widowed) with two of her sons and a grandson. She is a land proprietor and it is written that she was born in Teston, Kent, England. She is documented to be 58 years old on this census putting her birth year at about 1793.
I have her year of death in 1859. I don’t know exactly where I got this information.

Here is the family of George Ballard and wife Ann;
Ann born 17/11/1792 Maidstone, Kent. (Teston is a village in the Maidstone district)
George Christening: 18/07/1795 Teston, Kent.
Mary Christening: 14/12/1797 Teston, Kent.
John Christening: 12/05/1802 Teston, Kent.
Jane Mary Born: 26/8/1805 Maidstone, Kent.
Jane Christening: 08/06/1806 Teston, Kent.
John Christening: 23/03/1810 Teston, Kent.
Thomas Christening: 23/03/1810 Teston, Kent.
As there is George the father and George the son who could have witnessed Ann's wedding.
The only Starkey family I could find of interest was:
Richard Starkey and wife, Elizabeth - London - the children are:
William 1772
John 1774
Thomas 1776
Joseph 1777
James 1778
George 1779
Richard 1780
Elizabeth 1783
I note that you have Richard's date of birth as 1778 but he could have been christened in 1780.
-
I have had a look on Paul's site and found George Ballard who married Ann (unkown)
George born 1771 Kent, Ann born 1773 ... this matches your find of Ann age 68 years on the 1841 Census.
George Christened 18/07/1795 died 1871 but I did find he had one daughter Mary in 1825 in Middlesex, England, so he was living in the same area as Ann so could have attended her wedding to Richard Starkey.
Hope this helps ;D

Probably no connection at all but there was a Ballard in Deal in 1823. He was Thomas Ballard and his wife was Jane and was a seaman serving aboard HMS Ramillies, at the time manning the Watch House (forerunner of the Coastguard for which serving seamen were employed) He must have been resident in Deal for a short spell as his daughter Grace was baptised here on 15th July 1823.
I only mention it beacause Ballard is not a Deal name and being in the Royal Navy would have been passing through, so to speak.

This marriage would fit in and as we all know spelling deviation need to be accepted from time to time. The Ballard's were definitely all through Kent.
"Who Do you think you are" for example, David Suchet found three or four spellings for his surname.
Thank you for your research.

Thanks AJ100 for posting a reply.
The Thomas Ballard is this research was born in 1810 so a bit young to be married in 1823.
Ballard's were Watermen so he will probably be related somewhere else especially if he was born in Kent.
Thanks for taking the time to post a reply.

Madez1,
I spent time researching over the weekend and this family for George Ballard and his wife, Ann, is the only Ballard family living in Teston, Kent, England at that time.
So it would be reasonable to assume that this is your family which we have found.
Good luck with your further research

Would this be the George BALLARD who m Ann HODGES at Teston in 1792? Are there any clues on the marriage? What was his occupation? Did he leave a will? Was he buried in Teston?
Casalguidi :)

Yes, this is the George Ballard I'm looking for. Have checked Census 1841 onwards, and have found nothing. His children from Ann born 1792 to Thomas born 1810 - all born Teston, Kent. Have tried many sites but so far have drawn a blank.
During my research for Madez1 for her family, I have found Relphgenealogy pages and he is researching Jane Ballard born 8th June, 1806 and died 1874 Maidstone district. She is the sister to Ann born 1792 who Madez1 is researching.
Thank you for your assistance,

I have found two marriages for William Ballard in the time frame of 1765-1771: (Joseph was born 1779)
(1) Elizabeth Croft, St. Marys, Chatham, 17th September, 1765.
(2) Elizabeth Wright, 16th September, 1771, Folkestone.
Does anyone have any ideas how I can find more details on these two marriages?
Joseph was a Basketmaker so this could have been William's occupation. ??? ??? ???

The Chatham one you should be able to find in the online parish registers http://cityark.medway.gov.uk/

Is this too early ??
George Ballard christened 23rd May 1763 - parish church of Sutton -Valance , Kent , England
residence Sutton - Valance , Kent ,England
parents George Ballard / Mary ........source FAMILYSEARCH - SEARCH - FAMILYSEARCH RECORD PILOT
allan :)
ADDED...another possibility ?
George Ballard christened 16th february 1766 Eynford , Kent ,England ...parents Thomas Ballard and Ann
pedigree resource file has Thomas Ballard marriage to Ann Bassett 15th feb 1763 Eynford, Kent, England
oh dear another one
George Ballard christened 27th July 1766 in Loose , Kent .....parents George Ballard and Susana
again pedigree resource file has George Ballard to Susana Vorrall 7th aug 1763 in Loose ,Kent
so that looks like 3 between 1763 and 1766 ...they were the only 3 that I could find in Kent around the time frame...none around 1771

Casalguidi,
Thank you for giving me the lead to the online parish registers at Medway. What a fantastic site for us researchers. It took me some time but have been successful in finding the Banns of Marriage; Marriage; Birth of Elizabeth; her parents Thomas Croft and her mother Jane Gardiner's marriage.
As William was of this Parish also I will research further to find him.
Thanks for your assistance,
Gumball
Allan,
Thank you for your reply I will work with your finds later today.
Thanks again,
Gumball

I would be interested in your old formal documents & the coat of arms. I have spent nearly 50 years researching all Ballard lines in the UK & my own line is from Kent also.

Apologies for the delay in find this Platform difficult to navigate. I know we have handwritten wills. I will get pictures. The cost of arms is yellow and black with a Knight above a griffin in a shield. Too large to attach the image
