Title: sproxton immigrants
Post by: matchis on Monday 19 March 07 18:13 GMT (UK)
Two teenage Sproxton brothers, Arthur and William C, emigrated to Australia in 1908. They were of farming stock. Does anyone have any information about Sproxtons in Australia? Matthew Chisholm

No trace of them in my South Australian records, Matthew. I also checked NSW and Western Australian records online and could not see them, and they are not listed on the National Archives of Australia website, or in the WW2 database.

That surname does not appear in the death index for Victoria - 1921 to 1985 - at all.

Nor does it appear at all in the Queensland birth, deaths and marriages to 1914.

Looking in the White Pages - the residential telephone book - there are quite a few in Western Australia and Queensland.   You could try writing or telephoning some to track down the 'family historian' of the family.

Hi

There is a Sproxton marriage in WA on

www.openwindows.com/marriage/search.htm

and a couple of births in WA

http://www.justice.wa.gov.au/_apps/pioneersindex/default.aspx

There are numerous Sproxton burials on

http://www.mcb.wa.gov.au

Unfortunately none for Arthur or William C.

Cheers
cando

Edit - problems with link to cemetery board site.

A search of the WA po directories 1918 to 1920 shows  spelling SPROSTON First name Arthur.  He is a farmer at Buckingham.
Under this spelling there are  a couple of births ..no parents given..and marriages [all female] on the sites given above on this thread
On the NAA site which Magoo gave, there is Arthur Edward of above spelling enlisted for ww2.
His Next of Kin is Arthur of Buckingham.
you never know.
Might be yours.

The boat (Oroya) must have stopped before or after Qld - as they came through there as well. Perhaps the shipping lists are rather illegible  as by the time they had got to Qld Arthur was 18 and William 20. Alternatively if they came through Brisbane first  it took them some time to get to Melbourne  ;D

I had a quick browse at the archives today - no mention of Arthur or William in any of the BDM fiche & as luck would have it they were the only "full fare" passengers on their ship and the details recorded were name and age!  The "assisteds" at least had an occupation as well.

My grateful thanks to all of you -  Dee, Christine, Magoo, Cando, Sue and of course my pal Trish, who have taken the time and trouble to try to help me in my Sproxton quest. Very much appreciated. Matthew Chisholm

By  the Electorall roles  that  have recently  become available  to  ancestry subscribers

I  found  these  two  gentlemen

on  the  1913  roll at Oakey Qld
Arthur Sproxton farmer
William Chisholm Sproxton farmer

1925 at Biggenden same as above

so  did  your William  have the middle name of Chishom?

regards Jenn

Hello Jenn

Not sure how often Matthew is on RC at the minute but it would be very likely that the middle name would be Chisholm so you have probably found the correct folks - were there any spouses?

I didn't think to check the electoral roles - very remiss of me

I'm sure Matthew will then find your answer - I haven't been checking much lately

Rather wet down here today as well - helicopter buzzing over my head - must be a car accident nearby??
