Title: CHAPPLES of Devon
Post by: a young man on Saturday 27 November 04 11:16 GMT (UK)
Does anybody out there have any history of the Chapple's of South Molton?  We have gone cold with William Chapple b about 1702 - part of a long line of Williams.

Hi,

Have you tried the museum in South Molton? The man in there has a avid interest in all things Molton and there is also another man he can put you in touch with who is very knowledgable about South Moltons history.

Alas dear Debbie, it is a little hard to 'try' the Museum in South Molton from Sydney, Australia  :-\
I will link up with your other suggestion though.
By the way, I was born in Woolwich & grew up in Eltham before coming to Oz.

Hi,

I wonder if that is further back from my research.

I recently traced back to William Chapple born about 1768 in South Molton. He married Mary Davy born about 1770 on 23rd Sept 1793 also South Molton. I think he would be my g g g g g grandfather.

I'm looking for Lizzie Chapple - she was a cousin to my Grandmother (Winifred Amy Phillips).  Surnames connected to Lizzie would be Phillips or Butler.  My Grandmother was born in Newton Abbot, Devon so I am assuming that Lizzie and her family were from the same area.  Any help greatly appreciated.

Hi,
I have been researching my Chapple line in and around South Devon, particularly Totnes/Denbury/Newton Abbot area. I just wondered if you had any information about any Chapples living around that area?

Hi

I would be very interested if you have or come across a Phillips or a Butler who married a Chapple  and had a daughter named Elizabeth.

I am trying to find out exactly how my Grandmother's cousin Lizzie Chapple fits into either the Butler or the Phillips family tree.

My Grandmother Winifred Amy Phillips was born in Newton Abott - her mother was a Butler.

Any help appreciated.

Is there any connection between any of these Devon CHAPPLEs and the Samuel CHAPPELL who founded the famous Bond Street music shop in 1811?

There were at least two other piano-makers who set themselves up in London in the first half of the nineteenth century but who had started life as carpenters in Devon.  And so, I just wondered, if he set the trend.

Hi

I must admit that I have not not come across Butler or Phillips. Which date are we talking about?

I do know that my great grandfather Herbert Philip Chapple B:1892, was one of 7 children, who were, Mary, Susan Ethel, Margeretta Jane,  John & George (Twins) and Emily. Their parents were George Chapple b 1824, married Susanna Grant.

I cannot seem to get back beyond George, but am off to the Devon records office tomorrow so may have some more information. Perhaps George's brothers and sisters are the connection.

Hi

My Grandmother was born in 1896 so I am assuming that Lizzie Chapple was around the same age give or take a few years.

Will have a look through the info that I have on the Butlers and Phillips and see if any of the names you mentioned tie in.

Cheers

I am looking for information about the family of Thomas Chapple, born 5 January 1774, Bishops Nympton, Devon., married to Mary (?)  Their daughter, Mary Chapple, born 28 April 1797 at Bishops Nympton married William Hill ( born Ashreigney)

I believe Thomas Chapple's parents may have been John Chapple and Elizabeth(?) both of Bishops Nympton

Any information about this family would be appreciated!

Hi All,

If you come across any CHAPPLE lot that were connected to CHAPPLE up in Baltonsborough in Somerset in 19th Century, I have chapter and verse on part of that line that came to NSW Australia.  (George Chapple arrived ex Orwell in Jan 1855, son of John Chapple and Ann Dennis).  Cheers, MA, in NSW Australia

Hi, I've just been sent this link to the topic by a friend, since I am descended from the Chapples of Bishops Nympton and was there a couple of days ago looking for gravestones.  It is the line mentioned by Glen Westaway that is the same as mine.  Can you contact me Glen?

Hi Glen, Thanks for your message of 4.9.11 - I could read it but was not allowed to reply for some reason!!!  So I am returning to the main board to reply.  Thanks, yes, we are related and your Robert Chapple of 1704, and his son John of 1739 are the same ancestors I have.  Then we descend from two brothers, sons of John 1739.  I have a full tree of about 7 and a half thousand on Genes Reunited, if you are on there, so could open it to you.  My name is Angela Blaen and you can find me on google and email me too if that is easier.

Hello. I have Sarah Chapple baptised 1794 at Bishops Nympton who married Edward Buckingham at West Buckland in 1818. Sarah was the daughter of George Chapple and Joan Beer who married in West Buckland in 1792 and she was their only child baptised in Bishops Nympton - I'm guessing she was their first and their other children were baptised in West Buckland.

I'm trying to find George's parents - he was described as a sojourner at his marriage, a taylor, so I'm wondering if he actually came from Bishops Nympton. My problem is there seem to be 3 Georges baptised there around the right time, one in 1776, son of John and Mary, another in 1775, son of William and Meldrid and both probably too late, and a possible one in 1769, son of William and Elizabeth, details of which I don't have.

Can anyone help me with Chapple baptisms in West Buckland that might point to which George is mine or is the answer in Bishops Nympton?

Hi,

The George Chapple, son of John and Mary, b Bishop's Nympton is my great x 3 uncle.  I have no details of him after his birth, so there is a slight possibility he is the same one who has the daughter Sarah.  Certainly I've nothing to suggest he isn't her father.

I am doing some family history research for a friend of mine who is descended, I think, from a John Chapple who married a Catharine Burgess on 13 Mar 1796 in North Molton (through their son John baptised in Bishop's Nympton on 11 Jan 1801). The marriage record for John & Catharine says John was from Bishop's Nympton. The trouble is that there are a number of John Chapples baptised in Bishop's Nympton around the same time and I can't determine which is my friend's.

Does anyone have this John Chapple in their tree and have they worked out which baptism is his? Many thanks if anyone can help.

I have been trying to trace my Chapple ancestry since I found in my 5x Gt-Grandfather's will (James Willing) mention of "a portrait of my ancestor Judge William Chapple. I think the title "Judge" may be incorrect but the portrait may have been of someone in robes, possibly an alderman as my 5x Gt-Grandfather was an alderman of Devonport. I have traced the family line back to Richard Scobel of Ashburton who married Mary Chappel in 1742 in South Brent. Mary, who was born in Diptford in 1723, was the daughter of James and Sarah Chappel. In parish registers her father is referred to as Mr. Chappel so obviously had some standing in the parish. I have not been able to follow the line back from James Chappel and have not found out who this ancestor William Chapple was. If anyone has anything which ties in with my lines I look forward to hearing from you.
